The kid finally sent me pictures from one of the shark tagging expeditions. Notice they are copyrighted. Here are a few...

Oh, and some may think this fits in the Bad Idea category.

What they use to implant the tags

Before she got to play with the fishes, she had to do a turn at recording data

They pump seawater through the sharks' gills while they are on the boat. You want to avoid this end.

This was a female bull shark I think. Getting her data and ready for the tag

Measuring

I believe she said this one was a bit over 7 feet.

To learn more about the work of the RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (RJD) and their conservation efforts go here... http://rjd.miami.edu

She goes back out on the boat on Thursday. There is a space for me but she refused to let me go because she wants them to take her seriously. Not sure what that means.

Awesome pics. Did she do javelin in HS by any chance :confused3

CJ, thanks for sharing the pirate princess' internship experience with us. I'm really jealous of her. I know she's working hard, but to spend a summer doing what she's been doing would be absolutely fascinating.

And you couldn't pick a better time to share the shark pictures with us than Shark Week!! :lmao:

By the way, how does a Seton Hall student get hooked up with a shark tagging expedition using a University of Miami web domain? :rotfl:

And the verdict is .......torn meniscus and some arthritis. Possible solutions - surgery to fix the tear, more time out if arthritis is bad, shot (only once or twice), or suck it up buttercup. I think my plan may be to drink more.

Not sure that's what he meant by "suck it up buttercup".:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Yeah, you hold him. I'll hit him with the hammer.:rolleyes1

Cool pictures CJ. I have two questions for you:

  1. how do they catch the sharks?
  2. Was that her shiv in the first picture? :lmao:

Works on Paul, will work on a shark.:goodvibes

Need a little assist as it has been ages since our last trip....family is trying to pick out their individual choices for table service meal but we aren't doing park hoppers. How do you know which park will have the EMHs when you try to make your dining reservations?

Our AAA agent said "you are easy" when I booked this, and I said just wait. Now that SWMBO and the kids are involved they are already trying to add days, resorts, changes etc. :rolleyes2

Depending on your dates, this could help.

http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/hours.htm

Just make sure to keep checking back at the schedule as your dates approach. They changed 2 EMH nights on us:headache: as we were getting close and I had to redo FP+ and ADR's for both.:mad:

I think it was because they wanted to line up MK EMH with the Villains party at HS to give people someplace to go. Still didn't ask me first.:rolleyes1

We are eating at Kona again in October trip, but I am not a fan of all the construction there. I've noticed it more than the others.

Haven't made an ADR yet but we like to have breakfast there. Last time we were there in June the second floor looked like...

Did not care for it at all. They need to hurry it up.

And we met up with this guy. Always nice to see Jodi. And Randall too.

You must have seen the picture of CJ?:lmao::rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2:

Yea, especially when you compare our hair colors.

Don't do it! It's a trap. CJ will plan to lose his credit card as soon as you get there and make you pay for everything.:lmao::lmao:

It happens every couple of months so there is that possibility.

And the verdict is ....

...torn meniscus and some arthritis. Possible solutions - surgery to fix the tear, more time out if arthritis is bad, shot (only once or twice), or suck it up buttercup. I think my plan may be to drink more.

Ouch. Your solution is a good one but you may want to add at least one of his suggestions.

Great job she's doing, you must be very proud!

I was a little bit until she told me I couldn't go on the boat. Ungrateful little brat.

Cool pictures CJ. I have two questions for you:

  1. how do they catch the sharks?
  2. Was that her shiv in the first picture? :lmao:

1. The way I heard it is they use a line with specially designed hooks that are less invasive and can be easily removed. Very aware of the sharks condition both while they are getting them on the boat and while they are being tagged. Hammerheads are especially susceptible to stress and they let one off the line instead of tagging it because they were a little concerned.

2. No. The shiv she keeps with her is WAY bigger.

That would be a realllllllly long drive back to Delaware the next day ;)

But it might still be justified! :scratchin

Although, there are some roads here in Indy you might be able to help us with. Are you available for consulting??? :rotfl2:

For a small fee, I can make myself available.

So, your career goal of pirate may need to change? :sail: :lmao:

I always wanted to be a movie critic. Talk about a cake job.

Hitting a shark with a hammer? I don't see the problem.:confused3

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

Lawn Jarts. I had an old set of those when I was a kid.

I give her credit. She is busting her butt but it isn't work for her, it is just fun.

Long story. She picked SH because she wanted to study Psychology. Changed that to Environmental Sciences and SH has a good program with an excellent advocacy/public policy school.

My next door neighbor is an Asst. Dean at the Marine Sciences school. The kid and her twins are a few months apart in age and she was always considered one of the triplets. The neighbor got her an internship without portfolio which allowed her to do a lot of things, communications, working in the lab, out in the field counting plant life and the shark tagging program. She was aggressive weaseling her way into multiple areas. Lots of Resume padding.

She looked into transferring but would have lost a semester or more and that wasn't going to work. Grad School down here is a likelihood.

Yeah, you hold him. I'll hit him with the hammer.:rolleyes1

Or as she calls it, part of her training for Marathon Weekend.

No I think I would want a bigger hammer.

Or as she calls it, part of her training for Marathon Weekend.

I'm really uncomfortable with this line of discussion. :scared:

I went shark-fishing once though, and caught a rather large blue shark. We tagged it, but used some long pole with a tagging apparatus.. Sure as %^&$ didn't bring that thing on board! :rotfl2:

Did you know the Amish wear dresses into the wave pools and water slides? DW said she saw that today at Holiday World. She also said there was large number Seton Hall students there. I asked if one of them was Andrianna, and she gives me the "you're talking about crazy DisDads stuff" look again.

Lawn Jarts. I had an old set of those when I was a kid.

I had those as well. What a great idea. Give a kid a flying weapon.

This week, my oldest wants to be a marine biologist. I'll have her talk to your daughter if it sticks.

At the 7 month mark or earlier, WDW releases the calendar dates of the EMH. That's how I plan mine. They are subject to change, but not too often.

Not sure that's what he meant by "suck it up buttercup".:rotfl2::rotfl2:

That was just my interpretation.

Ouch. Your solution is a good one but you may want to add at least one of his suggestions.
.

He recommended surgery. Said that it was an easy procedure, could bear weight almost immediately, and back to normal function in 4-6 weeks. He said that he could see one part of arthritis, and depending on how substantial the repairs were, it could take up to 10-12 weeks for recovery from that. He offered the shot, but said that at my age, he didn't plan on giving it more than once or twice to prevent breakdown.

He said there was no risk of future damage, just future pain, and that losing weight would help with the arthritis, but not the tear. So, I think I'm just to make it thru to winter with the pain, and then re-consider the surgery then.

Wouldn't that jeopardize next year's Wimbledon?

Happy Tuesday Everyone! One week to go before the trip. Missed another few days.
Keep us posted as we are going through the back to school, summer is about over post Dis vacation blues these days. Enjoy the countdown :thumbsup2

DD knee all started with a torn meniscus - positive thoughts sent your way Norm.

Don't you always get that look? I do :confused3

Good morning gentlemen,

Very sad news yesterday.

Yesterday Stretch had his big doctor appointments to talk about how we're going to go about reconstructing his year. To say we were let down would be a gross understatement. We could do a prosthetic ear which has a whole range of issues that makes it unappealing. Our other option would be reconstruction. the method this doctor prefers isn't usually done until he's 10 although he'd be will to do it sooner. That has to be done before we can open the ear canal. We were led to believe by the first doctor that he'd be a great candidate to not need a hearing aid after the surgery. His partner who would do the surgery said he's 50/50. he also hinted that with how good hearing aid technology has come he doesn't understand why anyone would need bilateral hearing. Not at all the answer we were looking for or expecting. Right now Stretch can't wear his aid with a hat or bike helmet. Without it he has a hard time picking out sounds on his right. There's a major reason right there I can think of to have two working ears. I'm done venting for now. We're keeping an eye out for get togethers for families with this condition around the country so we can meet other doctors and get a second opinion. Looks like the next one is early summer next year.
Very sorry to hear this. Sounds like you are doing the right thing in getting multiple opinions and insights before making a final decision. Prayers for the little guy and may the force be with your family as you go down this path.

One year you say.....Hmmmm.....maybe a bounce back in my future again?:confused3 Do you have any estimated dates on the calendar?

My original reply got lost in the interwebs somewhere :confused3

We head out August 18th (2015), do a few days at Cocoa Beach for Kennedy Space Centre and a few other things, arriving at Disney August 23rd-September 5th.

That's the plan anyways

well, good news. just got a call from Make a Wish (well, actually an email saying the phone number they had for me was disconnected.. old provider pulled out of the market area and told us to find a new provider, and the email asked me to call a number to discuss our upcoming make a wish trip), to discuss our make a wish trip. we confirmed the dates we will be going. the flight times, i may have to ask for a later flight home! and we will be staying at the GF since the Poly is under construction. asked about dining plan (saw that they were testing offering dining plan without tickets tied to the room, would make me booking our meals easier for the character meals so i would not have to prepay them), and just need to confirm/figure out what DS wants his special thing to be while we are there. its tentativly set as the Jake and the Neverland pirates deluxe package thingy.

so our dates are confirmed Nov 20 - Nov 26. any of yall gonna be there during that time?

and since yall wanted a picture of me and DS.. this was taken the night before the pretty baby contest when we were there..

So, I saw the trailer for Donald Duck coming to Infinity 2.0. Does that mean I have to buy a whole new game and platform to put the characters on???

Glad to hear that things are confirmed for you and some pixie dust :wizard: and prayers for a magical time.

I think I am caught up on welcomes, so prayers and congratulations as appropriate and thanks for the guidance on the planning. I need to get there more often so I can be as skilled as y'all.

Off to the State Fair tomorrow, and then next week we are back into homeschooling fulltime and our normally abnormal life.

Good evening gentlemen.

Stretch and I went golfing with a work buddy today. Thirty minutes on the range really helped him out. Then we hit the course. He lasted five holes. Then he played on his Nook while we finished the round. He also played the last hole with us. He had a blast.

Very sorry to hear Corey. Great idea to reach out to other families and meeting other doctors. Knowledge is power.

And never concern yourself about venting here.
Thanks CJ. This is the safest place I've found to vent my furstrations.

Sorry to hear that, Corey. I hope you can get the answers you need.

Not sure how you feel about it but to me, hearing is more important then how it looks. Now our situation with Audrey isn't as important but we had her hand looked at to see if we could have it reconstructed but it turned out we could to a degree but cost her sone if it's functionality. We felt she could live with the deformity and it be far better to have full use if her hand then issues just to stop people from looking.
I hear ya Brent. In fact I think Stretch is leaning toward surgery so he can get away from needing a hearing aid. The problem is, if you open the ear canal first you cannot go back and reconstruct the ear later.

Thanks man. We're not in a big hurry right now. My sister is a nurse at the Mayo Clinic and will be sending us the info for who to contact. I'm hoping they can help. It looks like most other doctors who do this are scattered across the country.
