OK I have seen everything except the carcass part. Wasn't sure if you all had a freezer full of beef hanging at the fair and yours had the Blue Ribbon attached.

Interesting fact - the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion ribbons are purple. But I'm guessing "Pabst Purple Ribbon" was too hard to say, so the marketing department convinced everyone that the Blue Ribbon was better anyway.

So... in other words, the judge didn't know his @$$ from a hole in the ground?

Not necessarily. They are judged on different things - the animal is judged on muscle structure and body composition. The carcass is judged on things like marbling (the small pockets of fat intertwined in the muscle that gives steaks flavor) that aren't evident until it's hanging in a cooler.

Afternoon gentlemen. Just taking to quick break from the honey do list to make lunch and cool down. Hope all are well.

The week without kids didn't end so well. On Wednesday night they were visiting my grandpa in Wisconsin when Grandpa fell and needed to go to the ER. My aunt stayed leaving my dad to take three kids under 6 back to the Twin Cities. Then his knee swelled up on Thursday night. I wound up having to go straight from work Friday morning to get the kids and watch them on no sleep. Fortunately they all got along great. On Saturday DW took the kids to her sisters cabin and they all had a blast. Sunday we finally got together with my Dad's side for "Christmas" since every time we tried this winter we got snowed out.

Sounds good. Nothing like a deep fried corn dog.

and a happy Canada Day those celebrating such.

We just finished up a couple of days on a trip for my son’s college orientation. It’s been a long while since I spent any time bunked in a dorm type setting (let’s just say that it didn’t compare favorable to stayin’ at WDW). The mission itself went rather well though. We all got pretty comfortable with the campus and heard from a number of the professors and admin folks. The boy even meet up with another fell’a with a similar background and outlook and the two decided to room together. That solves at least one of the potential first semester pitfalls. Got his schedule as well and that has some 8am classes, but none in areas that trouble him so that’s two good out comes. Now we’re just waiting on the paperwork for the first official billing cycle (ouch…).

I have to ask....you won a prize for best carcass? What do you present?

And when we came back I brought my older truck that weighs less and has mud tires on it so I was ready to have some fun and point and laugh.

Actually, no. They’re not a common sight down here (even at the county fairs), but I’ll keep a look out for ‘em. If I encounter them, they will get tried.

Ii’s part of the NC university system and located up in the Appalachian Mountains. One of the best music programs in the Southeast, so despite the out-of-state tuition, we’re glad to see him headed up there.

I've been breezing in and out of the clubhouse and noticed that young Max has graduated and is moving on to college life, but not sure that I've ever taken the time to properly congratulate him or you and the Mrs. So, congrats to all 3 of yas!

I'm ready for 4-H. I was a 10 year member and dominated the crops projects in my day.

I forgot to mention, my favorite snack at the fair is a pineapple whip. There is one stand that has them that I really like to get them from. They don't taste exactly like the Dole Whips at Disney World, but I actually do like the taste of the ones at the county fair a little bit better. They definitely lag behind in the area of "atmosphere" though.

Lard is the only way to fry but SWMBO won't allow it. I never did 4-H but it is one of the few opportunities for the kids here. Th pineapple whips are good but I prefer the elephant ears.

My dad got a kick out of telling anyone that would listen (a even a bunch of people that wouldn't) that it was from hay grown in just over the border in Outagamie County.

That same year I won Reserve Grand Champion Beef Carcass. And that was with an Holstein steer raised on a dairy farm. Man, you should have seen how pi$$ed off all those people were that entered their Angus or Herford cattle.

It is a good project. $20 and the kids cure 2 hams. They pick one to send to the state fair and get to keep it and the other is sold to help fund the project next year. Our county ham house is out in my research bottom so I keep an eye on them. Checked last week and a mouse got in and one of th hams had maggots. Not sure if the ham didn't cure properly first and then the mouse went after it or if the mouse got through the cured part down to some bone sour region. Either way the kid is down to one ham unless one of the "extra hams" we do looks better. We usually try to have a spare or two in case of emergencies.

The most important part of higher education - paying the bill.

Just like a good Kentuckian. Always have an extra ham just in case.

We didn't stay, but we did see it. We had already packed the tent up when they called the race Saturday night and we had to go up hill to get out of the lot we were in. I had been watching people get stuck all day and I decided if we got anymore rain, we weren't going to make it out so we headed home.

We did come back Sunday morning to see the race though. Got there right before it started.

I know that bill is on its way, but it’s interesting that the folks up there didn’t harp on that particular issue very much. Their main messages were first: don’t sit in your dorm… get out and take advantage of everything that’s offered (after all, you’re paying for all of it).

The second message was that they needed to let their past go as much as possible and focus on their experience while they are there. The Vice Chancellor rather humorously elaborated on one aspect of that second notion by noting that long distance relationship are often a major (and often futile) distraction and wryly recommend that they just go on ahead now and break up with that high school sweetheart by asking: “Now why would you bring a sandwich to a buffet?”

We’ll figure it out one way or another but a lottery win would certainly be helpful.
