Morning guys! Had to keep tv off last night, it was just too much.

Plan for the day is to do Christmas shopping, grocery shopping, update the blog, laundry, make some cookies.

Man I need college football back :rotfl2:

Ditto Dude... Horrific!

Melody & I decided yesterday not to talk to Juliana about what happened yesterday. Then last night we thought we should talk to her about it on some level. We would rather have her hear it from us than from another child. I just got a call from DW...... On the way to CCD, our friends child, who supposedly didn't know either, blurted out on the drive how all these kids were killed in school yesterday. My DW told them we aren't talking about that right now and changed the subject. I' not looking forward to this talk.

It really hit us since we were so close to this tragedy and Juliana is in 1st grade, just like most of those kids were. Newtown is a small quiet town just like where we live. If it could happen there, it could happen anywhere.

Did you guys talk to your kids about this?

Now they need to figure out if the remaining schools are the Big East of the defecting schools are the Big East. Where does that leave Seton Hall that is leaving with the other basketball schools. Where does that leave Uconn a self pronounced football school? Only time will tell.

Latest rumor is they won't be taking the Big East name but I think they should. Thinking is they will try to add some schools like Xavier and go back to their roots which is a good BBall conference. UConn is in a tough position. Obviously they want out.

Trying to get up there in February and am looking forward to seeing a game or two.

We did, but our kids are older. I think it's better to discuss these things at home anyway. And even our kindergarteners practice "code red" drills at school where they essentially hide from shooters. It's good for them to know that there are bad things in the world, that mom & dad love them and will protect them with their lives, and that the drills can help. But you have to tailor it to the child

Once Juliana got home yesterday I basically left for work. I didn't want to talk about this and walk out the door. She will be home from CCD in about 45 minutes. I guess that will be the time for us to talk to her.

Morning guys,

Breaking news in the world of college basketball. The 7 Catholic schools of the Big East are leaving the league and going out on their own. Why is this news? One of the schools is Seton Hall where my money goes to fund the education of my daughter.

As a Georgetown grad, this makes me both happy and sad. I'll miss the Big East, but it's been going in the wrong direction for some time. Plus, it screws UConn, which always makes me happy!

I figured you'd be jumping for joy with this news. :sad2::sad2:

Good luck! It may have come up in CCD

My DD10 watched the news with us, so she saw it... she didn't really say anything.
My DS8 want't there, so at dinner we asked him if he knew what happened, and he said No. So I said "Bayley will tell you" (just to see how much Bayley comprehended. )
Bayley said "There were 20 kids killed at school"
So she obviously picked up some of the facts.

So we talked about it, and told them that sometimes bad people do bad things. But they have no reason to worry, and they'll be fine.
They didn't seem to affected.

Juliana is 6 but mature. I guess I will ask her about it first and go from there. I don't want her scared or anxious going to school.

One of my clients is a children's mental health organization and they deal with children witnessing violence too many times. You kind of have to take your clues from the child. If they bring it up, you need to acknowledge the event but also make them feel safe. Tough conversation especially since it was close to home.

She still screams like a little girl on Space Mountain!

I talked with my oldest daughter. Her kids are with their daddy yesterday and today. We'll see what they heard tomorrow.

Thanks for the tips CJ

I'm not sure but as I recall that was you screaming. :confused3 :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Seton Hall Pirate Ownage.

They should take the name and rebuild the conference based on it's roots. It will already be a good Basketball Conference and if they can add a few premier teams, it could be really good.

SH is supposed to not be very good this year but they lost to Washington in overtime and blew a big lead against LSU. Currently 7-2 but could be 8-1 or 9-0. May be at the game against UConn. Go Pirates. Oh and Georgetown sucks.

Just happened to talk to a friend who is a crisis counselor. A few of her suggestions:

Listen to your kids and how they are reacting. A key indicator is if they are sleeping normally or having trouble sleeping.

Don't bring it up or dwell on it but if they know about it (probably will have) and have questions/concerns, address them.

Leave the news off so they are not bombarded by the events.

Continue your normal routine. If they have soccer, dance or other events, go.

Let them know that school is safe, this is just one rare event.

Lots of hugs and other expressions of your love for them. Probably more for you than them. I called my kid probably 6 or 7 times yesterday.

Hate all this conference money jumping. Still, schools here are screaming they don't have any money and have to raise tuition and pay cal $2million to coach.

I will in a few before youngest leaves for soccer. I'd rather them hear it from me with an explanation that it is rare and not to be scared.

Bet he was screaming like a little girl. Did Juliana chastise him for being a baby when you got off the ride?

As RG3 said, "screaming like a man". :lmao:
