DIS Dads DDC XVIII - Spring Fever!

I’ve been in the Deep South a long time. I then went and married a proper Bell (and a dang fine cook to boot). Grits are rather often part of what we’re having for dinner much less breakfast.


The rest of that story is that I’ve actually considered opening a small café or a food-truck that specializes in meals using grits as a base. I’d make up three or four large pots of different base grits styles (regular, creamy, broth-based…) and then offer a choice of stir-ins and or toppings (say like: shrimp and grits, sausage and apples, various gravies, meets and cheeses, sautéed onions, garlic and veggies…). Basically, if you can serve it with either bread or pasta, you can serve it on (or mixed in) grits. I just wish we’d have come up with a better name for the stuff (‘cause that’s what really throws a lot of folks off).

Well DD did well with her testing today. Scored a 63 out of 71 on whatever test they gave her. They recommended that she enter kindergarten as scheduled.

Two things that she "missed" were her birthday, and a cutting exercise. We asked why she didn't tell them her birthday....she said she was too busy playing!

And the cutting exercise was cutting out a dinosaur. She said its too hard and besides, she only cuts out princesses.

So two things she could've done and scored more points, she just chose not to.


Now the next step is to wait and see if she gets accepted into the school system. We applied through "open enrollment". Essentially, applying to a different school system than the one you reside in.

The one we live in doesn't have the best reputation. The one we're applying to, my DW and I both graduated from. Evidentially they factor that in when they make their decision. I guess we won't find out until July!

Frustrating isn't it. Especially when they refuse to learn the easy way. Told DS many times that his mother is always right even when she isn't and he can't seem to get that concept yet.

Yah… there are certainly things that that end up being learned the heard way (mostly because they’re sure that they’re smarter then you are). I know there are points I’ve made to my boy that may have gone into his ear, and maybe even into the recesses of his noggin… but he still just hasn’t “heard” them yet. Sometimes kids have to touch the electric fence for themselves.



I only have control over mine for one more year. When we talk I hear some very good reasoning and some very good basics. Given that… I’m encouraged that at least we haven’t failed miserably. There’s really not much more I can say at this point that will change him greatly. It will be a girl that will take care of the rest (and it won’t be his momma much to her chagrin). It’ll be the one that he ends up caring more for then he does for himself. That change alone will be the one I’m watching for. That’s when I’ll know that he’s going to be just fine.

There's already too much talk about purses here, but I'll add one more story...

Last night, I met my wife to walk her home from work, which is what I do every night. She said she needed to buy some skin cream. There are tons of skin care shops on the way home. I point out the first one I see, called "The Saem." She said, "no, that place is too expensive. I want to go to Tony Moly."

On our way to that shop, we stop at a small clothing store. One of her friends is having a birthday next month and DW wanted to buy her a shirt. She sees a skirt she really likes and buys it for herself. As we are exiting the shop, she notices a fake Louis Vuitton purse. After haggling with the shop owner, she buys that as well.

I say to her while looking at the two bags, "I think the skin cream was cheaper at The Saem..."

Like any advice I give is going to be any good? Suggest we open something before the conversation begins so as the time progresses, I will give more sage advice.

At least they bolded their usary, criminal interest rates. I'm trying to teach mine not to use a credit card other than for gas purchases, online purchases, vacations, or emergencies, 10% each to save, give, invest, and spend the rest on a budget. Unfortunately, DW charges everything and never meets a budget. Teach her the right way now. Both mine have a savings account & checkbook and I have them use the check ledger to keep their balance. Once they get older, we'll talk mutual fund investing.

Same here. She is like her mother because she is tight with her money. Will spend it on splurges once in a while but she hoards her nickels.

Good call on the dinner with dad thing. I dread the day, but thankfully DD isn't dating until she is 35 so by then I will be senile.

And yes, I mean that term to apply to all the assemblage.

I need some printer help. I need to buy a good inexpensive wireless printer. We bought a HP something a few years ago for the laptops but it only worked for a few months. I am tired of having to either pull information from one of the laptops via the network or have them email me the info so I can print it for them. And this include my DW. I have a HPC5280 in my man cave/office wired to my computer. For a short while we had the printer wired to the airport but we had issues with it not printing everything in its queue.

Any of you Tech Savvy guys have advise for me?

And whilst I am thinking of it. DD17 (turns 18 on Saturday ) bought a used Kindle, can I buy her a gift card to set up her account so she does not need to use my CC? somehow she got a hold of DW CC# on her iTunes account and managed to spend $350 in a weekend.

I like the conferences because the teacher is young and hot. But, will give you the stressful story. When youngest dd was in kindergarten, old lady teacher kept trying to talk us into holding child back (repeat kindergarten) because she had a late birthday. I kept asking her why which finally prompted her into saying she would hit puberty later than other children. I told her she needed to base her opinion in her academic abilities and let me worry about any parenting concerns. She wasn't happy but I really didn't care. She is much better in school than my older child, who will turn 18 before she graduates.

According to my cousin Vinny, there is regular, creamy, and al dente. Then, there are instant grits. Personally, while I do enjoy eating grits, I am not enough of a grit connoisseur to be able to answer this question. I like my grits really hot with real butter, next to eggs, bacon, and biscuits with sausage gravy.

The Pirate Princess got her first credit card offer today. "As a soon to be college student you need a credit card instead of cash." Great offer, 0% interest for one year and if you pay the bills, only 29.7% intrest from then on. The new laws on credit cards must have gone through because the rate was in bold and in large font. What a ripoff. Preying on kids.

Anyone read that DTD is opening a Bowling Alley?

I always heard rumors they'd be putting one in Disney's Wide World of Sports.

I just read that now! I'd love it if it had Disney theming, but not likely to have that on the west side, i suppose. I enjoy bowling. DW, not so much.

The Kid comes home today after lacrosse practice carrying flowers and a grin on her face. I asked her what was up and she starts talking about her Drama orals and the paper she turned in. No child, I don't care about school, WHATS WITH THE FLOWERS!

Seems a boy asked her to the prom. Brought her flowers and wrote a poem. Despite grilling she would not even give me a theme for the poem. Told her before then thee three of us need to go out to dinner. Plan to bring my baseball bat with me.

Supposedly they are "friends." He took her to Homecoming so now I am not sure. Luckily, he just signed up for the Air Force (a plus on his side) so will be shipping out after graduation.

I was just reading the news and rumors on the It's A Disney World After All site

- P & F is indeed replacing Kim Possible and should be done sometime in June

- Disney has reaffirmed that Avaitarland is still happening and should be done in 2015

- It is rumored that Tommowland will receive a major revamp in the next few years

never did the kim possible, but i think I now know what I will do with DS while DW and DD have their girls lunch the last day of our trip.

tomorrowland might actually be futuristic again??? YES!!!
