Seriously, you are absolutely right. Another example of Lucas fixing something that wasn't broken. In the first movie, Han was a smuggler, a rogue, a money-hungry opportunist. At the end, he finds redemption and believes in the cause. There was no need to make his killing of Greedo more "just" and "in self-defense". Greedo was a bounty hunter who was threatening Han Solo and was going to take him to see Jabba. Han was a bad a-- and killed him first. There was no reason to make it any more justifiable than that.

Well, he didn't completely lose that as in right before he was frozen in Carbonite. Then, there's the whole Luke and Leia kiss that doesn't get discussed.
