Just needed to vent a little bit. some of you may recall how Ethan was struggling in school this year and how we had talked to the teacher multiple times with no real consistant positive results. We were just glad to have the school year end, and decided to get him a reading tutor for the summer and see if she can help him. Well, today was his first session with one of the interventionalists at the school and his is dyslexic!! No wonder the poor kid has sturggled so much!! He has to have more testing next week to see what type of dyslexia ( I dint know there was more than one type) and how severe it is! I wish we had known this sooner for his sake. I had wondered about the possibilty but thought if there was a problem like that the school would have picked up on it. I guess not!:rolleyes1

At least you do know now. I was in the third grade before they figured there was something up. There are a lot of verities and a good number of them are relatively mild but will still impair reading/writing skills in the early years. That said, it can generally be worked through with extra practice and patience. I still read rather slowly, but I have learned to read very carefully. As for writing… there are still words I misspell (even though I know better) but that doesn’t mean I can’t express a coherent thought. Math made perfect sense up until Trig (that’s where I stopped enjoying it).

Steve, I hope it works out for Ethan. I suffer from a mild version of dyslexia and it can be a struggle at times. I am sure with you and your wife's support he will get through this. By the way, just curious, is he left handed?

Me three… and I’m “sinister” as well. It’s odd how handedness seems to be related (not an indicator, but related) Actually I’m somewhat ambidextrous (I hate that word… it should be ambisinistrous) in that the hand I use depends on the task I’m trying to accomplish. At least I wasn’t forced to change my writing hand.

DW was not diagnosed until high school. And, her teachers made her sit on her left hand and learn to write with her right hand. Yeah school system. My oldest is left handed, but no signs yet. DW struggles with her numbers at times.

Good luck to Ethan.

Sorry to hear that. It was thought that I might be “special” at first, but when they did some general IQ tests (remember this was 1969) and I scored off their charts… they had to rethink things a might.

That makes me feel better Dave!!! The lady today luckily works with this sort of thing in the district and she said she was very surprised that he has made it this far and not been sent to her already. She said that she was going to make sure when school starts back in the fall that he has an IEP right off the bat. He has to have an IQ test next week I think and then that will determine what type it is. He is a smart kid (at least I think so).

They still do IQ tests? Wow… I wouldn’t worry too much about that one. I suspect that they’re going to find that he’s plenty able, but just goes about learning in a different manner. It’s often just a matter of learning how to learn.

sister catherine???

Nope… Mrs. Wilson (but I suspect that they were related).

How has everyone been? Have you missed me or even noticed I have not been here? :rotfl2:

Wow, Steve! I'm glad they at least diagnosed him and will begin working with him. That can only be a good thing. He is a bright kid. Tell him to keep fighting, he'll do great.

It is funny that you mention that...when he first started to write he used his left hand a lot but mostly his right now. When he plays baseball you never know if he is going to swing left or right handed...honestly I dont think he knows ahead of time either, but he can hit either way! Is there a correlation of dyslexia and being left hand dominant?

I know something you don't know...I am not left-handed.

Morning guys :thumbsup2

Good Mornin' Guys! :wave2:

Morning guys!

DDs last day of the school year today. I figure that they will probably be bored out of their skulls by about 4:00 p.m. :confused3 :lmao:

Tomorrow is graduation day. She tried on her cap and gown tonight to give me an exclusive preview. She looks good in that robe draped with tassel, sash, medal and rope cords. (In case you are worried, I will be posting pictures later) Really proud of her and the young scholar she has become.

Tomorrow is going to be crazy with all the running around I need to do before the ceremony. But can't wait to see her walk across the stage to get her diploma.

Congratulations!

Oh how I wish that I could go and be part of the party. :sad2:

Actually, this is exactly what happened to us last year when we went the 1st week of December. It did open up shortly after they started selling the CP packages and we were able to get in where we wanted. However, we had done Le Cellier lunch as our CP package, so we lucked out there :)
I guess this is why I'm surprised... we booked a Le Cellier lunch last year on 12/4 at our 180+10 window with no problems.:confused3

Welcome back, stranger.

I'm glad that the problem has at least been discovered, so now you can work towards a solution.

Oh yeah

belated good morning all

I wish I could make the meetup as well, but right now I am considering cancelling the trip we have planned for November as it is. More and more stuff is breaking around the house and the November trip is a major portion of my credit card bill right now. Sux, but it is what it is.:sad2:

Houses suck! They suck all the money out of your wallet!

Hope things turn around for you and you can somehow still manage that November trip!

I hate hearing about people having to cancel trips....makes me

I know what you mean Scott, I'm not thrilled about it, but...

Today's Birthday Wish brought to you from the Fine Folks at the DDCC!

Well, it is approaching 12:30. SIL is asleep upstairs after I successfully picked her up at the airport and the kid is next door with the neighbor's girls she grew up with. I am trying to catch my breath.

As of noon today, the Pirate Princess' high school career is over. Took her, the guy that dared to ask my little girl to the prom and the SIL to Tony Roma's for dinner. Have to admire the kid, he didn't run away after meeting the Aunt.

Tomorrow is graduation day. She tried on her cap and gown tonight to give me an exclusive preview. She looks good in that robe draped with tassel, sash, medal and rope cords. (In case you are worried, I will be posting pictures later) Really proud of her and the young scholar she has become.

Remember, it's ok to cry a little. Not too much, just a little.

What is the kid that dared ask your little girl to the prom doing next year? Please tell me he's not going to Seton Hall.
We started Amelia off at her old school, which is French Immersion and within the first couple of weeks we were called in by her teachers because she was struggling. The english in particular was bad, as it was not covered in Grade One, but she hated the french. So we made the desicion to move her to all-english, so she had to switch schools to one closer. The principal there had a meeting with us and reviewed where she was at (barely could read at grade 2 ! :scared: ) and got a plan in action. He placed her in a class with at least one girl she knew already from dance, (helped the transition to a new school), and set up some tutoring-reading programs for her (twice a week for 5 months) She did get more homework then most kids in her class, to help her along, and she's doing alot better now, teacher is pleased (she still has struggles, but we work on it with her). She's just getting into the Judy Moody series here at home, and some other chapter-style books that we've bought that she wanted, and have a summer-plan to keep her working on it. Her spelling is "meh", but to be honest, I can't spell either worth a damn, despite all the reading I do :rotfl2:
Having a teacher that cares can make all the difference. Books that she enjoys will also be a huge help with all the extra practice she'll get in.

By the way, I don't see a single spelling error in your post.:lmao:
I know something you don't know...I am not left-handed.

Princess Bride.
I remember playing a friend in ping pong a long time ago and he smoked me like 21-4 or something. He did it left-handed and used that line.
