Oh - I forgot to tell you all...

Installed 16 GB of memory in my iMac last night!!!!

Niiiiice! I remember when 16 GB was a huge hard drive. :sad2:

Yesterday at work I helped some techs install some new Internet equipment. 30 Mbps up and down now. :thumbsup2

Wow! 10 bucks for a pound of ground beef? Are other food prices, like on fruits and vegetables that expensive too? What are your staples?

Fruits can be a bit pricey, veggies are relatively the same as American prices, maybe a smidge more expensive, depending on the type.

Luckily we live near a major Korean-style farmer's market, so we can get some pretty good deals there.

They're small pieces of metal that a stapler uses to hold paper together, but that's not important right now.

:lmao::lmao: I was just going to say that we use the same staples that Americans use. We even have 3M here!

Nice, which version of iMac do you have?

It's after 9 which is just a couple of cups of coffee away from lunch and lunch time is about half way through the day so really you only have like 2.5 days to go.

How did you find Jeykell on netflix? Did you know about it ahead of time and search for it? or did netflix recommend it? I'm trying tof figure out if there is some content discovery tool that will unlock the full potential of netflix streaming.

I would be curious if that exists as well :confused3

We have been getting the message on our iMac (about 5 years old) that our memroy is full and it is keeping us from loading any more photos, anything to iTunes, etc. Would adding more memry help?

We added memory to get Snow Lepoard. I wonder if we can add anymore??

I remember when a huge hard drive was a casette tape. TRS80 for the win. Someone on hear has to remember when their hard drive was punch cards.

I have the 2011 21.5 inch version with the 2.7Ghz i5 processor and a 1TB hard drive.

Sounds like what you're talking about is hard drive space Dave. If it's saying you can't load any more photos or iTunes items, that is hard drive space.

You could purchase a new hard drive and migrate your existing hard drive to it before installing it. (I've successfully upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro from 160gb to 500gb)

There are some nice packages and how-to videos on otherworldcomputing dot com.

I would research your iMac model online. My guess is that different ones will have different max ram amounts. I know that with the MacBook pro's in our office some support less ram than others. I think that's a round about way of providing you the least helpful answer ever. "Yes you might be able to use more ram in your iMac and yes it might make things better."

Scott's suggestion about it being the hard drive does seem like a likely culprit unless you are actually getting an error message that you are out of memory. To tell if it's hard drive related click on the mac hard drive (you'll likely have a link on your desktop) when the screen loads at the bottom of it you should see. 1 or Blah selected 10 GB available. How much available space do you have. If that is less that a couple GB its probably worth either cleaning up your hard drive or getting a new one.

My first programing class in HS was on punch cards. I used COBAL, FORTRAN, & BASIC as languages. My DMom was a Punch Card Operator for McCullogh in the '60's. Yes I know that I am dating myself. I remember using the old IBM series II, that was the size of a good warehouse, had less capability than my watch, and had to be kept in a climate controlled room at 68 degrees.
Since this was in LA, got to see my DMom at work in the summer was great.

Good Morning Gents.....It is a good day....The Herd pulled out a bowl win last night :cheer2::cheer2: I enjoyed texting back and forth with Scott during the game.

I think I have it straight in my brain that today is Wednesday and not thursday....I was screwed up on everything yesterday...I am on call again tonight but after that no more call until January 2!!!:dance3: I just have to make it until 330 Friady and then I am off all next week!!! Hopefully no stones will interefre with this little break :rotfl2:

I still need to get things wrapped...I guess I will try to do that when I get off work tomorrow....

Do any of you guys have to travel to family for Christmas or are you spending it in your own homes??? Thankfully our families are all close by here.

Today is Ethan's 7th birthday and memories of when we were in NY adopting him are just flodding back like it was yesterday. The image that is continuing to go through my mind is the one (on Christmas Eve 2004) where his birthmom signed the papers to terminate her parental rights and how she and Shari together dressed him to leave the hosptial and then how she turned at looked at him for the final time with total heartbreak on her face knowing that she had no other choice but to do this. Also, at that very minute a tear rolled down Ethans cheek. There was no crying from him...just a single tear. it was so emotional that the attorney had to leave the room. We were blessed to be there when Ethan was born and blessed even more to have him with us each and every day since. I think from time to time about his birthmohter and birthfather, and wonder if they ever think of him. Esepcially on days like today. Or, I wonder if it is something that they have tried to not think about because of the pain it would cause. One of her saddest days was one of our happiest days!

We've got about 150 mile (each way) drive ahead of us on Saturday. Most of my family is still in the area where we grew up, so we usually end up driving to all of the family get togethers. Of course, with Ryder being due 3 days after Easter, we're making every come down to our place. :thumbsup2

That’d be me…

When I worked in the “Operations” department, our entire 60,000 employee, 25 facility manufacturing business was run on an IBM mainframe…

An: S370-186 to be exact.

One of these…

Much was stored on cards. We did have state of the art disk drives though.
Three whole banks of Model 3350 drives (known as “Madrid” drives) with an astonishing 25 gigs of space apiece (I’m sure y’all can do the math)

xm12.jpg

As amazing as that was, the larger files were still stored on Mag-Tape so as to spare the hard-drives for the critical processes. I spent a lot of time running (literally running) between the Tape Library and a bank of 10 of these wonderful devices

Wow. No way I could live there. Must have pig and cow. Interesting take on your perspective on what is going on in N. Korea. That and the recurring experience of watching the news and the reporting of missile launches. Can imagine watching CNN and hearing that Canada launched another missile. Does Canada even have missiles? If so are they filled with your so called bacon?

I've got a friend in the Canadian Navy who took us on a 4 hour tour of the ship one weekend, his brother in law was pretty up there in rank and actually opened the door to the missle room for us. The funny thing is he sent me a video of them test firing a cruise missle, they are capable of launching them but can't carry them. Because of the poximity of the US to Canada the US doesn't want Canada to have them, but if anything goes down they want Canada to be able to assist. So....they sailed to somewhere out in the South Pacific, offloaded a cruise missle from the US ship to the Canadian one, stayed on board with the Canadian crew while they test fired it, then went back to their ship.

I had searched for Torchwood and it gave me a catagory of British TV shows. Another good one that it came up with after I watched Walking Dead was Survivors, its about a group of people trying to band together after a virus wipes out 99% of the population. No zombies though:confused:

First Christmas in a few years that we are alone, even DS's Godparents, who we normally do the other holidays with, are heading up to Ohio. It's going to be great, I stacked the gifts heavily towards Lego this year so i'll have 8 days of building to keep me busy......us busy.......yeah yeah the Lego is for DS, that right, keep "us" busy.

Happy Birthday Ethan. Steve, that's a very moving story.

As far as the old computers, my first computer was a C64. (friends had Trash 80s and Vic 20s before us but the C64 was our first). I've had the "pleasure" of supporting / working on many different platforms over the years including the following:

Trash80s
C64
Amiga
IBM DOS
HPUX
HPE9000
DEC/VAX
Multics
Apple II
Apple Mac (the originals)
TSO
A/S400
Sun Solaris (still one of my favorite platforms)
NeXT

I'm sure I'm missing some of the platforms I used at school as well (Comp Eng program in the early to mid 90s). Can't say I've had the pleasure of working on punch cards, but I can still recall some of my scripting days as a SysAdmin.

On a completely related note, DW and I watched The Social Network last night and a couple of thoughts we shared about the movie were:

1) Both liked it as it gave an interesting perspective to the founding of Facebook.

2) Justin Timberlake contiunes to amaze me as to how versitile he is wether it's dramatic acting, comedy (ala SNL) or his typical singing/dancing.

3) I was laughing aloud to myself at the "coding" references made while hacking and found myself thinking in a couple of situations, "There's a better way to do that". :rotfl2:

4) I am a huge geek.

New to the threads. Just thought I would say hi and am looking forward to reading and getting involved in the discussions on here.
