DDA's New Year's Weight Loss accountability Thread

...since I have not for a while. I started my NutriSystem program on Monday and LOVE it! I have had no trouble with cravings so far and have managed to squeeze in 15 minutes of exercise a day since January 1. I have lost 4.5 pounds and am hoping now that I have a bona fide diet plan the weight will come off more rapidly.

The months of January and February are brutal at work for me. I work 14-16 hour days including the time I am working at home these two months. I have 84 students participating in Junior Music Festival at the end of February and 18 of them are performing piano concerti. I am the "orchestra" for those performers so I have to practice too! In addition to that, I have 93 students submitting compositions for ajudication on the state level this week so I am editing and double checking that everything is reight with those. So, if you don't see me much, or I don't post, please know that I am here and I am participating. I am so proud of all of us and our "stick-to-itiveness."

Goal - 60 lbs
Progress - 4.5 lbs

ELin..... are you saying you love the food.... or the fact that you've lost weight on the food???

well my mom called me after she left work and told me she was going to the food store, so i had her pick me up a bunch of healthy stuff....maybe this will help me get back in the swing of things starting tomorrow

Both, actually! :flower:

I have enjoyed everything I have eaten so far with one exception. The Apple Cinnamon Soy Chips had a horrendous aftertaste! I don't care if I am supposed to eat these things; I would rather eat another twelve cups of lettuce than have to eat those things again :rotfl:

Checking in before I go to work, running late, as usual!!

I'm sorry I dont remember everyone's names... posting here, letting me read your thoughts is helping me, it truly is a motivation! Thank you all!!

1. Throw out the junk food - I found some I dont like, as a mom I do keep snack cakes for lunches, I found brand (Lil Debbies) and kinds (star crunch) that I do not like, so its not tempting to me!! I also never buy chips!! OK I buy pringles - for the kids, and hot cheetos (eww) but the kids love them, and they dont tempt me!! Sodas - I agree its hard to give up... but I have so far - and I'm trying to add Splenda, doing a 50/50 for my hot tea in the morning. Some morning program had some doctor on saying its the corn syrup or the sugars used in sodas that block some enzyme that we crave but dont feel full, always makes us hungry and overeat... not sure if its true, but it motivated me not to even drink Diet Soda... drinking that water is hard!! I bought some of those crystal lite to go to dump in my water bottle... for a change up once in a while...

2. Healthy snacks... I need to buy some grapefruit!! I used to get the no sugar added grapefruit in a can, so it was easy to grab and go!!

3. Exercise in the Morning!! WTG _ what a great motivation to others here!! I cant get to the tv in the morning - too many kids around!! lol BUT like everyone else, still trying to find my time to exercise!!

4. Discovery Health Diet and exercise - I bought the exercise ball at Target - I think that's a wonderful investment, its so easy on my back doing crunches now!! If you want a dvd to help with other exercises, try the "Core Secrets"!! Other than that, I do use the menu as a "suggestion" mainly!! lol

5. I put my pants on - they FIT!! YEAH :cheer2: I havent been in pants since my surgery end of October - I've been living in sweats (and maybe denial!! lol) I got on the scale - Down 10#'s What a relief... 40 to go!! :moped:

6. One day at a time. My goal today is exercise on the eliptical, and get those crunches done!!

What a great attitude. Congrats on the loss of 10 lbs and fitting back into your pants. What a great feeling. Hopefully before too long you'll be falling out of those same pants. Keep up the good work.

WTG, eeyore45! :cheer2:

I need to get to the gym at the Y. I didn't do my full walk/run program yesterday; gave up 5 minutes early and didn't run as much as I'd like. I'm blaming the hills in my neighborhood for that; man, they're rough! But I guess if I train at home, running the much flatter WDW 10K course should be a breeze. I read a warning somewhere about the hills and bridges being tough, but no way is their grade as steep as my street!

I'm hoping to get on a treadmill at the Y. I'm dying to know what my pace is. I'm hoping it's close to a 15-minute mile (minimum requirement for the 10K), but I'm sure I still need to work up to that.

DH got as far with his training as buying a new warm-up jacket and running shoes. He hasn't gone out yet, though. Since our other big New Year's resolution was to keep our budget in check, I'm feeling a little  about his buying them! Meanwhile, I'm running around the neighborhood wearing the old leggings I originally bought to wear in the early stages of my pregnancies!

Thanks for the positive encouragement!!

I made it back to the gym... I decided with everything I've read to start slowly, and since year after year I "burn out" or quit after 2 - 3 weeks... this time, start slow...

So I did 10 min on elliptical, then did some weight strength training, then 15 min on the treadmill, then 15 min cooldown/stretching.. including ab crunches...

So I came, I tried, and I accomplished....

One day at a time.

Try.

(and that kick in the pants doesnt hurt either!! :rotfl2: )

I'm thinking about joining Curves to help me get motivated to excercise along with my Weight Watchers. Anyone here ever been or know anything about it? I stopped by there today on my way home from work & am going back Monday for a free workout/trial.

Thanks to everyone who gave me encouragement the other day when I was being a little hard on myself. Tonight DH and I walked outside for 45 minutes and I felt much better. The reason I was getting down is I sometimes get a tightness and pain in my calves when I walk, and it really slows me down, sometimes to the point of extreme pain. I try stretching, but it doesn't seem to help. Then tonight the tightness started a little, but then it stopped, and I was able to make the whole 45 minutes without pain.

I don't know what the tightening up is due to, but I have had it intermittently ever since I was in college at 18 years old. I've tried looking it up on the internet to see what it might be, and I still am not sure. I have mentioned it to my regular Dr. but he never was able to offer any ideas. Anyway, when I lose weight, it seems to get better, when I gain weight it gets worse. So that is just another reason why trying to lose weight is good for me. But it doesn't explain why I used to get the leg pains in college when I had to walk a lot, because back then I weighed a lot less than I do now.

Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement, and it looks like if I keep trying to work on my weight, and follow the walking plan things will work out.

im getting back on track , slowly, but surely---
my eating was much better than it has been--didnt work out, but did a lot with the kids at work today so i was tireda fter that...
gonna work out in the morning before anything else

Thanks to my personal DDA Weight Loss Accountability Jiminy Cricket (Glynis), I had a great day. She checked in with me this morning to see what I planned on doing. It was the same I plan for every day and haven't done yet. Thanks to her gentle encouragement, I would like to report that I walked on my treadmill for 1/2 hour and have had 40 oz. water. Thanks Glynis!!!!!

Do you have a podiatrist or chiropractor? My DH is a podiatrist (but I am not, so take my advice with a grain of salt, please!). Oftentimes leg pains are caused by minor deformities or misalignments of the foot (like being too flat-footed, for example). If this is the root cause of your calf pain and tightening, custom-molded orthotics (available from all podiatrists and many chiropractors) for your shoes can keep your foot in the proper position when you're walking and this may alleviate your pain.

I have flat feet, which causes plantar fasciitis (heel spur pain), but the orthotics in my sneakers have helped me to stay pain-free for over a year now. I know your situation is different, but getting your feet looked at may help you get to the root cause of your calf pain.

Foot alignment problems work their way up and can lead to leg, knee, hip, and even back problems.

Another thing to check if it's not your feet is your levels of potasium and calcium. If these two minerals aren't in the proper balance, you can get leg cramps.

Good luck, Ellen!

Thanks for the advice. I haven't been to a podiatrist since I was a child, and I did wear orthotics in my shoes back then, but I don't even remember why!! So maybe I should see one, if it is possible that this is the root of my problems. I will look into it. It certainly might be worth a try. Thanks again!

My mom spent years with pain in her feet. She now has orthotics and she is also now getting physical therapy to help stretch out some problem areas. For the first time in years, she is beginning to walk again without feeling pain. A foot specialist is definitely the answer to finding what is wrong that is causing your pain.

I'm exhausted.

A day as the substitute nurse, I saw more head injuries, bloody noses, fevers, diahrea... than I care to!! (not to mention giving meds, and helping the 4th grader who is diabetic, insuin dependent) Usually have 2 pages of log ins, today 4!!

Then the snow came, and came, and came... but, I have to pack to chaperone the high school band tirp to Wisconsin Dells - I'm exhausted...

I shoveled twice two 1/2 hour shifts... callusses on my hands...

LOOK I took a picture!! I just started turning nobs on dh's camera and look, it turned out!! That stick in the middle of the yard is our 5 year old Red Maple tree - about 5'5" tall!! the blob in the lower left corner is the mailbox... lotta snow around here!! AFter a few days in the 50's and no snow for months... this is just gorgeous!!

DSCN1263.jpg

They finally got the snowplows out - and I had to make room to get the cars out early to get us to the buses for the trip!! Dh had a bad day, this will surprise him.. no will shock him... maybe I'd better warn him :rotfl:

(PS I second the podiatrist advice, I found out I pronate -ankles turn in, it turned into a painful plantar fascia thingy - the crocs helped me in Disney, the orthotics is a better for winter, and for exercising!! lol - I also am finding taking Coral Calcium a huge relief too!! I take 500mg twice a day!! Heard it on Paul Harvey... thought it couldnt hurt!! lol )

Have a great weekend!! YEah on accountability partners - - now, how many have printed Mickey and the Kick Butt poster?? Get it on your refrigerators, it will put a smile on your face!! :wizard:
