Here's the first 2 weeks. Walking for the first 6 weeks or so will be by time only- not by mileage. Now, one thign my trainer emphasized was to take a nice slow leisurely pace. She says to always leave yourself wanting to walk more. That way, when you have to walk the next day, you will be looking forward to it. Let me warn you- THIS IS VERY HARD TO DO IN THE BEGINNING! But......... you should do it. It works. Walk slowly- don't race. Don't even try to measure how far you went right now- it may discourage/encourage you to do more/less. Right now is not the time to concentrate on this aspect of walking- ok???? You'll want to do both because you're all excited about doing something new and good for you, but PLEASE take my advice- you will be so glad you did in about 4 weeks.

Good luck everyone! I start my walking all over again tomorrow!
Any questions just let me know. I'll be more then willing to help if I know the answer!

Anyone here interested in doing the half at WDW in 2007???? It's always the 2nd weekend in January.

I could possibly be interested. I've never done anything like that, but I think it could be fun! Can you give me anymore information on it. I'd like to be armed with info before I talk to DH about it.

I'm so sorry he didn't agree to the Jell-O! DH and I buy the sugar-free kind for ourselves, and my daughter always ends up gorging herself on it before we get to have more than one cup each. Keep searching for a healthy snack he'll consider eating. There's got to be one out there, and you'll both feel good about him eating it.

Our school system is very big on diet and exercise (given that Alabama is #1 in the nation for either diabetes and/or obesity). My 5-year-old daughter is really taking that stuff to heart. In fact, she once said she'd eat dinner only because it would give her energy to exercise more! (Jennifer, if it's OK with you, I may be asking you for eating disorder advice if this behavior continues. I know it's too early at the ripe old age of 5, but I'm a bit concerned by that kind of talk.)

Anyway, where I was going before I digressed was to ask if your son is getting diet/exercise education at school as well as at home. If you, your DH, your pediatrician, and your school system are sending him the same message, he just might listen to one of you. I agree with not putting him on a diet per se (I think he's too young IMO), but steering him toward healthier choices and leading by example will help him become a healthy adult. Try not to give in, because I know how tough it can be for you as a parent to avoid temptation when there are quick, easy "bad" foods in the house. Good luck!

Thanks, I didn't give in and he ate all his dinner. I offered him at least a dozen healthy snack options that I know he eats and he was obviously testing me. Well I won this battle. Let's see what's in store for tomorrow.

Deb

I planned to walk on the treadmill tonight, but dh got there first. I dug out my Walk away the pounds for abs tape and did the one mile. Felt good. I stuck to my diet today, but didn't drink enough water. I hope to down a couple of bottles before bed tonight. I don't think Chris will log on tonight so I'll update for him.

From Kitchensinkguy:

I stuck with the diet and drank a gallon of water at work today. I got in my exercise by walking/running on the treadmill for 30 minutes.

See you all tomorrow

Deb and Chris

Ask away, any time.... It's never a bad thing to keep an eye out for, with ALL young girls (any age really).... whether comments mean anything or not. Some girls (this one included) never even make comments, so you're just being a good mommy for paying attention :goodvibes

If anyone is interested:

Last year when I trained for the Half Marathon at WDW, I worked with a women who trains elite marathoners. She gave me a program that was very easy to follow. I am more than 100 lbs overweight and have health issues and I was still able to complete the half- so.....

If you would like a copy of the training/walking program month by month, starting at the very beginning, let me know. I'll be happy to post it for you.

karen

I would LOVE that info! Running/walking bores me to tears really, but DH is obsessed with running. I wouldn't mind giving it another go, so maybe if I have a goal that includes WDW ......

ETA: Ok, so you already posted it. Bad, Jennifer! I always try to read through before posting .... oops. Thank you so much! I definitely am interested in the January 2007 half!!! That will be about when I can get DH back anyway, depending on his vacation. But even if he can't go, I would LOVE to have that as a goal!

Well- Day 1 for me was a semi successful day. I did really well during the day- then NIGHT CAME! Does anyone else have a problem at night? Any suggestions on how to handle the evening cravings? I wasn't hungry at all just had the munchies. Anyway- I lost 1 lb yesterday! WOOOHOOO! Maybe if I keep telling myslef that that 1 lbn can turn into 5 by this time next week I'll do better.

The Marathon....... what an adventure that was. It was a lot of work and training, but I did stay on task better when I had a definite goal and knew I was gonna be accountable to a lot of people if I didn't do it! In 2007 the Half marathon at WDW will be on Saturday - January13. It usually starts at 6am (if I recall correctly). It's best to arrive at least 2 days before the marathon. That gives you a day of travel than a day of rest before you have to walk that 13.1 miles. You must have a pace of 16 minute mile (BUT AIM FOR A 15 minute mile) or you will be swept up by the infamous sweeper and not be allowed to finish. This kinda happened to me last year. There was a big group of us that were on track with the timing, but we were stopped at the back entrance into the MK and not allowed to finish. They said we were behind the clock, but we were not. People were so mad! Some were yelling, some were crying- I just stood in amazement at the reaction! MK is about mile 10. We were ok with time (NEVER even saw the sweeper come close to us..... NEVER!) Anyway- to make a long story short- they realized they'd made a mistake- still didn't let us finish but gave us a medal anyway. It was a medal that meant nothing because I didn't technically finish the 13 miles. So- I need to do it again! RIGHT?!?!?!? I don't think WDW will ever make that kind of mistake again- not after the reaction they got! That's why I say to aim for a 15 minute mile- you will not get stopped for sure if you do.
Anyway..... after the marathon is over DH and I stay for a week full of fun, uncrowded days at the world. It's so beautiful weather wise- mid 70's nice breeze- usually doesn't rain when we're there. And yes.... you can swim! We stayed at the BCV's last year when we went and after the half was done DH and I went to SAB- OH MY GOSH!!! It was like HEAVEN to my legs! I will never forget sense of relaxation I felt when I went into that pool! PURE HEAVEN!!
Oh- my DH did the half with me. We enjoyed training together and walking this together. You guys should talk to your DH's/DW's about doing this with you. Wouldn't that be a blast?!?!? To have our little group there with just our spouses for a week? This would be a really nice Christmas present! ;) While we were there we planned (On the WISH board) many meets and it was a blast meeting and greeting all the online folks we had trained with during the year. I made many many friends doing the half- and have great, fond memories of this event.

I told DH about this half marathon idea this morning, and he would be up for it, if I could be. The thought scares me because it sounds so hard, but it would definitely be something to work toward that would motivate me. So anyway, I might just be up for it, and so would my DH. But first I need to follow the training plan and see if I could really do it. What an awesome way to motivate myself to be healthier, and what an awesome reward to be able to go to WDW to celebrate the accomplishment. I am definitely interested in trying to train for this.

I talked to DH about it last night, and he sounds supportive so far. Do you think it's doable for someone who has never done a half marathon before to actually be able to do this? I would love to do this and with WDW as my goal, I think I'd stick to the training. I don't think I could talk DH into doing it with me, but I might try my father. Do you think the half would be too difficult for a 74 year old? He walks everyday and people actually think he's only in his 60's. He's a very young 74. He is as obsessed with Disney as I am, so to be able to spend time with him in WDW would be heaven for me. Have I mentioned that I am definitely a daddy's girl?

Also, do you know what the registration fee is and when we would have to register?
