DDA's New Year's Weight Loss accountability Thread

Today is my off day for my exercising, but i may do some crunches and leg lifts later before bed..

But i have a little story from today--
I ran into my ex boyfriend after my dentist appointment today--(for a bit of background, we dated for 2 years and i havent seen him in over a year)...The first thing he said to me was "wow jen, you look so skinny--you look good"

Now-that may not mean alot, but i guess since he hasnt seen me in awhile, he could see the differences...its something small, but it makes me feel good that you can tell the difference!

Where do you get low carb baking mix? Do you make it yourself? This sounds fantastic!

I used to be able to get it a Price Chopper and even Kmart. Most places have really cut down on the low carb products they carry so it might be impossible to find. It was an Atkins product. I also found low carb crackers in the diet aisle in the past and they were good on top too. Since we haven't done the low carb thing on a full time basis for over a year we are going to have to adjust to what we can find to check out what's available on the web.

Did you try the rasberry/chocolate dessert? I've got to make some. It is so good.

Well, I just came across this thread today, but I would like to join in as well!!

I have battled with my weight for my whole adult life, whenever I lose I always end up gaining it back. My last effort was through weight watchers and I went from 170 in Sept 2003 down to about 140 by April 2004.

Now I am back up to 160. At least I didn't gain it all back, but I really want to get it under control again. There is diabetes in my family, and I am already on blood pressure medication, so I really need to keep my weight under control for my health. I am 5'3" so if I could get back down to 140 I would be at the top of my healthy weight range. I would even be happy with 145.

So anyway, I will be following the weight watcher point system, as that worked really well for me the last time. I will pledge to exercise at least 10 minutes a day, with a goal of 20 minutes or more at least 3 times/week.

My starting weight this morning was 160.
My DH is very supportive, and is interested in exercizing more and losing some weight, so that should help me. He won't 'do' weight watchers, but he will be happy to eat the meals I fix for him, so he will be eating healthier either way.

I am at work now, but when I get home I will be throwing away any leftover Christmas desserts and other junk food.

I am looking forward to having a group to support me, and to hold me accountable. I already started on my weight watchers plan as of today, before I came across this thread, so this is perfect.

Good luck to all!

Ellen

Great to have you with us. You've taken the first step to a healthier life and we will all be there with you.

I decided that I would follow the diabetic diet but I lost my book and am going by memory so I have not been too rigid but definately within guidelines

I must be doing something right b/c I have already lost 1.5 pounds since Sunday!! :cheer2:

I need to get my butt in gear on the exercise and water - Deb tell Chris - Steve will be thrilled when he hears about the new approved exercise routine ;)

I agree it is nice to just have this one thread (sorry Nancy)

BUT

I do like the idea of having a way for us to check in:

so what if we start a thread and I will have Baloo make it a sticky - that is our progress thread - each of us makes one post in the thread -
then we can put a ticker in - our goal and do a weekly update on there - that way we can see how everyone is doing and it won't get lost in our discussion thread

I will go start the thread to show you what I mean

Tmfranlk you've got one of the worst jobs done, I hate the grocery shopping and menu planning.

Glynis Congrats on breaking the plateau. I've had some that lasted months. Hopefully you will see lots of progress now.

Blueeyes a compliment from an old boyfriend that is awesome. Keep up the good work.

That sounds good. I understand. Here for support and daily updates the other thread once a week for progress only. That works for me.

I just hope Chris and Steve don't think that the "newly approved" exercise needs to be done on a daily basis. That could be exhausting.

Congrats on already seeing a weight loss that is great. I think I've gained, but I'm probably retaining fluids. Hopefully by Sunday I'll see some results. I'm not discouraged though, having done it before I know that I can succeed.

Deb

I am doing okay on my eating, not perfect, but better! I walked at a brisk pace on the treadmill for 30 minutes this afternoon. Tomorrow I will do an exercise video.

I have some friends at work who want to form a group to motivate! I hope all this support keeps me on track.

I'll be...can I say this...owwwwwwww......
40....there it is in black and white....in March and I don't want to look and feel like this!!!

I looked at the new thread. If I am correct we should each make one entry and each time we want to post our progress we will edit our own post. Is that correct Kate? That will definately be less confusing.

Deb

Kate, Deb and I have both posted on the other thread. Looks good! THat will help us keep track of everyone.
Thanks!

Exactly Deb -

one post per person on that thread - and edit it weekly - see how I added today as a weigh in day - I like the idea of a Wednesday or Friday Weigh - In

Sunday weigh ins can be frustrating - but really- we can all do our own day just keep our progress updated

My oldest son is whining and complaining that he doesn't like this healthy eating. He wants a snack. I offered jello, fruit, sugar free cookies and he doesn't want any of it. His idea of a snack is a can of Spaghettio's and franks. I'm not going to give in though. His pediatrician feels that the boys have the potential to have weight issues and I know that it is my responsibility to teach them the propers foods to choose. I am not putting them on a diet, but offering healthier options. Now I'm questioning if this is worth it for them. He is really complaining.

Deb

Deb-
Im not a doctor, obviously :) but i would stick with it--He will probably be whining because maybe he is used to just grabbing junk type food ( i know i am! haha)
Especially if the doctor said there are potentials for weight issues , id stick with the "healthy stuff" as long as u can ..

just my opinion of course!

I'm so sorry he didn't agree to the Jell-O! DH and I buy the sugar-free kind for ourselves, and my daughter always ends up gorging herself on it before we get to have more than one cup each. Keep searching for a healthy snack he'll consider eating. There's got to be one out there, and you'll both feel good about him eating it.

Our school system is very big on diet and exercise (given that Alabama is #1 in the nation for either diabetes and/or obesity). My 5-year-old daughter is really taking that stuff to heart. In fact, she once said she'd eat dinner only because it would give her energy to exercise more! (Jennifer, if it's OK with you, I may be asking you for eating disorder advice if this behavior continues. I know it's too early at the ripe old age of 5, but I'm a bit concerned by that kind of talk.)

Anyway, where I was going before I digressed was to ask if your son is getting diet/exercise education at school as well as at home. If you, your DH, your pediatrician, and your school system are sending him the same message, he just might listen to one of you. I agree with not putting him on a diet per se (I think he's too young IMO), but steering him toward healthier choices and leading by example will help him become a healthy adult. Try not to give in, because I know how tough it can be for you as a parent to avoid temptation when there are quick, easy "bad" foods in the house. Good luck!

Kate- if we do this or have too many posts on weighloss they (the powers that be) may want to move it to the WISH board. Any thoughts about that?

If anyone is interested:

Last year when I trained for the Half Marathon at WDW, I worked with a women who trains elite marathoners. She gave me a program that was very easy to follow. I am more than 100 lbs overweight and have health issues and I was still able to complete the half- so.....

If you would like a copy of the training/walking program month by month, starting at the very beginning, let me know. I'll be happy to post it for you.

Here's the first 2 weeks. Walking for the first 6 weeks or so will be by time only- not by mileage. Now, one thign my trainer emphasized was to take a nice slow leisurely pace. She says to always leave yourself wanting to walk more. That way, when you have to walk the next day, you will be looking forward to it. Let me warn you- THIS IS VERY HARD TO DO IN THE BEGINNING! But......... you should do it. It works. Walk slowly- don't race. Don't even try to measure how far you went right now- it may discourage/encourage you to do more/less. Right now is not the time to concentrate on this aspect of walking- ok???? You'll want to do both because you're all excited about doing something new and good for you, but PLEASE take my advice- you will be so glad you did in about 4 weeks.

Good luck everyone! I start my walking all over again tomorrow!
Any questions just let me know. I'll be more then willing to help if I know the answer!

Anyone here interested in doing the half at WDW in 2007???? It's always the 2nd weekend in January.
