Thanks, Jennifer. I did find out that he was riding in a car last week with a smoker (he was with his dad), and smoke is completely foreign to him, so that could have had something to do with it. I made his dad aware of it and got a good response, so hopefully I've nipped that in the bud. I just picked up and gave him his meds.....prednisolone, amoxicillian, codiene cough syrup. He'll take his albuterol again later. I've never dealt with 4 meds at a time so this is going to be interesting for me trying to keep it all on schedule.

Yikes! That's a lot of stuff! How long does he have to be on all of that?

2 days on the neb., then as needed.
10 days on amox.
5 days on the other 2.

I have had asthma all my life, it was bad when I was a baby and youngster, seemed to get better as a teen and young adult. Then one year I was about 25 it was back with a vengeance (you never out grow it) and it seems to get worse the older I get.

If its too hot I can't breath (but I do great in Florida) and the cold makes me cough constantly.

So who can enlighten me on asthma? The dr. said Nicholas has bronchial asthma, triggered by a respiratory infection. I always thought that asthma was an occuring thing, like after too much physical activity. He is just constantly coughing, like every 30 seconds, so when he said asthma, I was surprised. Anyway, they gave him a breathing treatment in the office and sent us home with 4 different prescriptions. I will swing by soon and pick them up. Nicholas did have respiratory issues when he was a toddler, like I said before, pneumonia, croup and bronchitis. We also have the nebulizer from when he needed treatments years ago. I hope you can get some good answers. Ashtma is very frustrating when sometimes you would think you are okay and then wham you have an episode and it throws you for a loop.

My oldest son Howie was diagnosed finally when he was about maybe 7 that he had Ashtma. Before that the Dr that we had would try different colored pills and not really give me definate answers. (family Dr that Hal's family had used for years) I finally put my foot down and had him tested at Hershey Medical Center. Before that at about age 18mos he had a seizure and when the Drs in Hawaii saw him, they wanted to do all kinds of testing and have him take some drug for the rest of his life. Can't remember the name but I just was not too keen on it because of the side affects and also they could not give me any good reason why, just take it and lets watch him. I said no.

So when we moved to where we live now, I finally found a good pediatrician who specialized in Ashtma and we finally got the help we needed. He recommended I check with the Lung Association which I did and they had some seminars where they had speakers talk to the parents while the kids were with physical therapists. We talked to medical drs, specialist in asthma and allergies, psychiatrists and the physical therapists. It really helped because I got a lot of answers to the many questions I had and I made sure Hal's parents came because I was really having a problem with her meddling and not thinking I was doing enough.

Howie only ended up in the hospital when he was young at age 9 when we really had to monitor him and change his medicine. There has been times when he refused to take his medicine going so far as to hide the pills, cause fits, or make himself sick. We had the nebulizer, he took shots, we did it all. We found out that sometimes stress would make him have an episode like when it got close to a holiday or other times. There has also been long periods where he had no problems at all. But it is something that will always be with him. He could be 90 years old and have a bad cold and land in the hospital with problems. There is no cure and you do not grow out of it.

Now as an adult, he has been in the hospital 4 times and he has to be careful with stress still. Really cold weather is a problem too. Then when we were leaving the Outer Banks, there were wildfires about 40 miles away and you could really smell the smoke that morning and he was really having a hard time breathing but he always has his inhaler close by.

He just told me that he is back to taking the shots and after a year or two he hopes to have less trouble.

I just remembered the medicine was Phenobarbitol

The next day we tried to switch rooms. They gave us a room where there was a public restroom just inside our room door, so we had to leave our room unlocked so people could get to the restroom. I went to complain about it. While I was gone the check-out deadline passed so the door key wouldn't work (I know - it wasn't supposed to ever lock, but whatever!) So ALL of our stuff was in that room - luggage, park tickets, money, everything. They wouldn't give me another room because I didn't have any money - it was locked in the other room! And they wouldn't open the room for me to get our stuff out. I went to the concierge desk but the lady told me they weren't open. So I went outside and had a bowl of Raisin Bran (I don't like raisins) and then I told DH I was going back in to stand in the line. Weird!

Did I mention that I spent a good part of the day yesterday reading "Your horrendous resort experiences" and a thread on the DVC about someone's awful trip to AKV?

What cutie pies!!

11 of us went to Whispering Canyon and the whole thing was not up to par. The food wasn't nearly as good as previous trips and our waiter would have been better suited for the haunted mansion.

Nicholas is still coughing and running a fever. I guess I will break down and take him to the dr. today. My concern is pneumonia, since he has no other symptoms. He had it when he was 11 months, and all he had then was an extremely high fever.

Hope he is feeling better. Did you go to the dr?

We have been doing so well with the Wii. My DD is so happy today. Instead of the voice saying, your obese, it said, your overweight!! She has lost I forget how much BMI. She's really doing well. But my son and his wife have also lost weight.

So it is on!!! California Grill, here I come....

Heidi- When would you like to go to New York city? Perhaps we need to do a DDA NYC meet sometime in the fall. Would anyone be interested?

I would love to see some shows, do a double decker bus tour, go to ground zero during day time, Ellis island, Statue of liberty, etc

Well both Daniel & I have asthma. I have had it since I was a kid. Daniel has always had breathing problems (Hospitalized for RSV when he was a baby). I am on singulair & advair. Daniel is on singulair & flovent. We both carry albuterol inhalers for accute attacks. What did they give Nicholas?

Sorry Tammi, I should resd from the end of the thread first as you have answered my questions already. Yes, smoke triggers both Daniel & my attacks. Dairy also bring on attacks for Daniel & for me when its very cold outside I cannot breathe. Hope all the meds work & Nicholas is doing well.

Run-ruled means that the other team got enough runs ahead of us to stop the game before the end of 7 innings. In this particular series (Pony league), if the other team is ahead by 10 runs after 4 innings, the game is called.

And that is actually what happened to us today. We were run-ruled in teh 4the again. The boys just haven't been playing well. It was hotter than heck -- 100 degrees plus the heat index, so I'm not sure what it was. I went and picked up Jake from his playdate, we ran an office errand, then came home and I got a nap. That hasn't hardly happened in months.

An especially quiet night here. I brought home PF Chang's for us to heat up for tonight after we got up from our nap. I now have a total of 8 hours of sleep in the last 24 hours. Now we're watching TV. I even get to go to Church tomorrow with no baseball games on Sunday. What a great weekend!

We went to Logan's for dinner tonight. After Anne Marie's talk of steak, I had the filet, cooked to perfection (usually they overcook it it for my taste) and it was delicious.

Thanks for all the responses for Nicholas. I guess what confuses me is that nothing has been out of the ordinary for him, other than the smoke, so why now a flare-up, when he hasn't had a respiratory problem in years. Must be one of those medical mysteries.

It sounds like Nicholas started with a respiratory problem, like a cold even, and it caused the asthma to flair. I have to be very careful around people with coughs and colds, as I get them and then because of the asthma they can get really bad, taking more than two rounds of antibiotics to clear it up.

Prednisone and albuterol are asthma meds that I am pretty familiar with. Smoke is definitely a trigger for me, along with strong fumes, such as bleach, paint, chemicals, and even some perfumes. I have problems with humidity and have taken a prednisone taper while on vacation as a precaution, I can no longer take the prednisone because of the diabetes, so now I take along my nebulizer and pulmicort. I would definitely ask to see a respiratory specialist, mine took me from not being able to walk across the room without a coughing fit, to now most people don't even realize I have a problem. I would also talk to his doctor about your upcoming trip and the possibility of complications due to the heat and humidity, better to be prepared and not need it than to get there and Nicholas have breathing troubles.

Sorry to ramble, I also had never heard of cough variant asthma, until they told me that is what I had. It all started with a bout of bronchitis that just wouldn't go away.
