Where did you get the cute monorail usb? Too cute!!

I bought it loaded with a Space Mountain ride photo. I saw them as a "bonus" a few years ago and really wanted one then but didn't have anything I wanted to buy to get the "bonus". The ride photo was super cute so I had to buy it and decided to spend the extra to get monorail.

I think I will probably be going down one at a time for a long time to come.

Didn't mean to scare you but felt you should be forewarned. In 1976 I had my right foot done and just to see the difference, I was in the hospital for 5 days. They took me in the operating room to do the procedure!!! I had a cast on my foot for 6 weeks.

Forward to 1994 and I decided to have the procedure done in the DR's office. He was a family friend and I wanted him to do the procedure instead of someone else who would have put me in 'twilight sleep'. My daughter took me and by time I got home, I was in a little pain, but I made sure I took the pain pills every 4 hours to manage the pain. Even over night I set the alarm. I had a very unique shoe with just a velcro strap over the top and it was bandaged up and I had to change the dressing every day and also do exercises so the big toe would still bend for me. I could not drive for 6 weeks but could go out if I felt like it which I didn't. Hal did everything for me unless I felt like making supper. The kids helped a lot too.

Not sure I could handle the 6 weeks in a cast. How does you foot look after 34 years? Any signs of the bunion coming back?

Beth-enjoyed your zoo photos! I would have enjoyed all 300+ of them. Is 6th grade middle school for Myles?

Debbie - I sat here yesterday thinking about you all as well as other friends who live on the Gulf Coast. Bob and I talked about the aftermath and what is still not done in your area. I cannot imagine how horrifying and life-changing that day must have been.

I don't know why, but here in Utah, all the coverage was about the devastation in Mississippi. After hearing from you about all the damage, I was pleased to see our news stations devoting the majority of their time to Miss! New Orleans was only mentioned yesterday. The rest of the weekend was to Mississippi.

Makes me realize how much work there is still to be done!

Hi, everyone! I didn't post all weekend, but wanted you to know I'm still alive and kicking!

I just felt really "off" all weekend. Kind of like I was wading through hot tar! Anyway, I realized that I ran out of multi-vitamins a couple of weeks ago, and never bought anymore, so I ran out this morning, and got a new bottle of vitamins, and already feel the difference.

We took Leslie to dinner and a movie on Saturday night to reward her for filling her "job jar". We went to pizza pie cafe and then to Shrek Forever After. It was a really fun night!

School seems to be going fine for all the kids. So far, Jacob has managed to get all his homework done in class, so all he has to do at home is his daily reading and any book projects that are assigned. The twins do have homework, but they can do it together, and then I check to make sure it's right. Katie is enjoying her Creative Writing class and her English/History combination class. The other classes are just "ok", but she's still positive about them.

I'll try to be better about checking in here. I don't want to miss Jenna's arrival, or that of Deva, or the twins, either.

My foot, rather feet look great. If I told you the year difference, you would not be able to tell which one was done when. Every once in a while, I have phantom itching on the scars, but otherwise, it was the best thing I have done. I should have had the second one done sooner.

I'm so glad that he is liking his school!!!

Katie is on an A/B schedule, and I found that having 2 backpacks really helps her stay organized. We have an A day, and a B day. She also has to write EVERYTHING in her planner, and then I have to stay on top of her. She doesn't understand why it's in her best interest to finish an algebra assignment on the day she actually had the instruction, instead of waiting a day so the instructions can ooze out of her ears! Luckily, Alan backs me up, and so far, so good!

Keep on him, Mom! You're doing well!!!

I am not sure DS could handle 2 backpacks. I think that might confuse him. Today was a B day, but he saw his Geography teacher and she said they will have a lot of work tomorrow. He brought his book home and finished an assignment she had said they could finish in class so he won't have as much to do tomorrow. If he had to remember to move the book and the completed paper to his A backpack there would be problems. Also, he has English every day (it's the class he has with his lunch, so it is shorter than the other periods) so he would have to remember to move that stuff every day.

The Theatre cluster lead teacher told him the most difficult thing for freshmen to figure out is if they should do their A homeowrk on A night, or leave it until B night. We are encouraging him to do the work the day it is assigned. If he doesn't have much to do he can study his vocab (words to prep for the SAT) or browse monologues.

Becky, I am sure you will feel much better before it is time to leave for Spain!

Wow, the A/B schedule sounds complicated. Nick has a block schedule. He has 4 classes per semister (1/2 year) He is still graded in quarters and some classes are for only one quarter but are paired with a second class for the next quarter, filling the block. So he has English, Health/PE, Advanced Bio and Social Studies for the first half of the year. He said that he carried all his books all day as his classes are all on the first floor and his locker is on the second floor. He doesn't feel like he has time to run to his locker between classes.

On Katie's A day she has Health, English, Advanced Orchestra and Spanish. On B days it's Algebra, History, Creative Writing and Science. Each teacher requires their own 3 ring binder. Her locker is so far away from all her classes that she doesn't like to leave anything except her coat there during the day. We tried one backpack last year, but even with one day's worth of binders, it was hard to carry, and then try to remember to change out the books. Yikes!

So far, it's much easier this year. We'll see how it continues.

DS has Acting, Costuming, pre-AP English, pre-AP Geography, and pre-AP Biology on A days. B days are Diction, Audio/Visual Technology, English (same class every day), Algebra, and New Works.

I am confused by New Works. They don't seem to DO anything in there. It isn't a required course. He has Dance (PE), Health, Speech, and Foreign Language that are mandatory for graduation yet he has this "New Works" that won't satisfy ANY of those. I don't get it. Why didn't they put him in a required class?

We have Open House 9/13 so I'll see what I can find out. I am not 100% sure about Health and Speech still being mandatory. The state made changes, and the schools decided to keep requiring some of the things the state axed. I know A LOT of the kids choose to go to summer school for required stuff so they have room in their schedules to take fun classes during the year. He has to be 16 to take summer classes at the community college, but I *think* he can go to the regular high school and get a semester of credit. We'll cross that bridge later. MUCH later.

It's going to be a hot, sunny day here. Yay for summer not being over quite yet!

It's interesting to read about the different ways schools work around the country. We have six day schedules here, but most classes don't change based on the day number once they get to middle school. Every student K-12 has PE every other day the entire school year, so all that matters for that is whether it's odd or even. The elementary students have specials once during the six day cycle (music, art, library) on the days they don't have gym. For Miles, his orchestra days will alternate with his PE days. Art is one quarter (every day), tech is one quarter (every day), and FCS (Family Consumer Sciences...home ec) is half the year (every day). Laura will have a science lab alternate with PE. Health is a half year course, and I think she'll actually have a study hall the other half of the year. This is the first year that she'll fit one in. PE is required all 13 years. The half year health course is also required for graduation. I know that English is required all four years of high school. They need two years of global studies, one year of American history, a half year of PIG (Participation in Government), and a half year of Economics. They need three years of foreign language, but they are now starting that in the middle school (I think 7th and 8th grade will count as one year). I don't remember the amount of required math and science, but I think it was minimal. Mine take math and science all four years of high school.

The high schools are pushing "4x4", which is 4 years of the 4 core classes - English, math, social studies, and science. The problem is that kids who aren't pursuing careers in areas of high level math and science kind of get set up to fail because those courses are so flippin' HARD by the time they get to the 4th year. The foreign language "requirement" is 2 years, which they can get one year of in middle school BUT they have to take a semester in 7th and a semester in 8th, which is bizarre.
