DDA Chapter 26

Bernadette, good luck with pin removal!

Becky, I was happy to read that everything went well with pathology! I hope you are feeling better.

Debbie, I actually was getting upset yesterday when I read our paper's coverage of Katrina. The entire front page article was about New Orleans. There were some small mentions of Mississippi further in the newspaper. I certainly can see where the frustration/anger comes from.

Good luck to Cassidy on her first day of school! Matthew starts classes today, too. In fact, he should be in his first right now.

Laura has an interview for a life guard position at the Boys and Girls Club today. I don't think we have too much else that needs to be done today (except another mountain of laundry...how did that happen again?) Tomorrow evening she needs to go to freshman orientation, because she is a senior mentor. Wednesday evening we have 6th grade orientation for Miles. I guess this school starting is getting serious...

Have a great day, DDA!

5 years ago today we were sitting here in a boarded up house, listening to our roof blow off and wondering what we would face when it had passed. As far as Katrina went we were very fortunate, but many of our friends and family were not. Thanks to many volunteers that came afterwards, and people banding together, everyone I know who lost everything has now rebuilt or relocated, although for some it hasn't been long.

Here's Jim Cantore talking about the forgotten coast, he was here when the storm hit, I wasn't "really" scared until someone asked him what those who had not evacuated should do, and his answer was "Get on your knees and pray", that's a moment in time that I will never forget.

Debbie - I sat here yesterday thinking about you all as well as other friends who live on the Gulf Coast. Bob and I talked about the aftermath and what is still not done in your area. I cannot imagine how horrifying and life-changing that day must have been.

Bernadette - You all had a full weekend! Good luck today.

Vicki - Great shopping deal you found. Don't oyu love when you find an old "friend" like that??

Deb - Nice new travel home. I have seriously talked to Bob about someday ditchoug our house and buying an enormous RV to live in. We have really talked about it a lot. Some of my best memories of summer vacations were when we took trips in an RV.

Five weeks from tonight, I'll be at the MNSSHP party. Terry & Stephanie will also be there! Chuck & I are running the 5k on Saturday morning as well. We are looking forward to that too. I need to work on getting in shape and lose some weight. I'm back to within a couple of pounds of my heaviest weight. This is where I got the last time when I got motivated and lost the 25 pounds. I kept it off for more than 2 years and then slowly crept back up. Time to get serious about it again.

Are you all still there on the 4th? Would you like to join us for breakfast at Kouzzina?

Beth,
Good luck with all the back to school stuff. :wizard: for Laura & the lifeguard position.

Becky,
SO happy to see your results.

Vicki,
Yay for MNSSHP!!!

Deb,
Good luck with getting the boys back to school & the new camper.

Tammi,
Nice car! Congrats!

Elin,
We never saw hummingbirds in NY..now we see them alot. I had never seen one until we moved here & they are amazing to watch.:)

Theresa,
Sorry about your uncle. Hope your girls enjoy school & Cassidy knows you are there for her even though you are not there physically.

Bernadette,
Good luck with the pin removal. Sounds like you are recovering well. :thumbsup2 The USB drive is too cute!!!

Debbie,
Yes, you are right..we do not see alot on Katrina's effect on Mississippi.

Elizabeth,
Sounds like your DS is doing great. Glad he loves school. That age is so hard & when they are happy us moms have peace. :thumbsup2

Terry & Stephanie,
Yay your cruise will be here soon!! :dance3:

Becky-I took photos of the monorail USB. It lights up when plugged in. And has wheels on the bottom.

I love that!

I've never heard pen drive. Around here it's zip drive or thumb drive usually. We may have an extra one. If you need it, let me know.

and around here they are called flash drives. :confused3

We had to take a couple of things up to Matthew yesterday. We decided to make a day of it and go to the zoo up in Syracuse, too. We invited Matthew and his girlfriend, but they didn't want to go, so it was just the four of us. We had a wonderful day. I will try to go through the pictures soon and post a few. I am just feeling so very lazy today.

As I was reading this morning I saw that someone congratulated you one your new car, Tammi. Did you post a picture?!?!?

I even went back to try to find a post in the past 10 days or so and could not find one. I am telling you, the DIS is wonky sometimes. I often miss posts because they never show up on my feed. :confused3

Hmm. DS took his costuming supplies this morning. I hope he can get through the metal detector with a box full of needles, straight pins, and 2 pairs of scissors. I guess they will call the Costume teacher if there is a problem. :confused3

Tammi - Congrats on the new car. (Elin, I know she posted it on FB so maybe that's the only place so far.)

Beth - Sounds like a fun day at the zoo!

Theresa - I hope Cassidy has a good first day and that Abi is settling in to her new school.

Jen - Happy first week of school.

Deb - Love the new camper! That is crazy with Nick's ride home. I hope you can figure out alternatives!

Stephanie - Good to see you!

Bernadette - Good luck with the pin removal. I'm glad that it's doing so well. Love that USB drive!

Elizabeth - I'm so glad that DS is doing well at school!!!!

That is an interesting thought. I'm sure that they must be used to it, though.

Miles supply list for school includes a bottle of non-alcohol based hand sanitizer for art. So far, we haven't located any. I guess they can't have the alcohol-based one because kids ingest it for the alcohol. Really?!? I know the dangers of preschoolers licking it off their hands not knowing about the alcohol, since I work with preschoolers. I never would have thought to worry about 6th graders doing it on purpose, though. Teachers have such different things to worry about these days.

Bernadette, good luck with the pin removal! Sounds like a good shopping day, minus the flat tire. LOVE the monorail USB!! DS has to have one for school, but he just has a plain one. In fact, he has 2 plain ones because I bought him a new one at Staples without knowing the old one only had ONE document on it.

Vicki, yay for your shorts! That is a great bargain!

Jennifer, sounds like things are moving right along in the girls' room! We are still missing DS's bed. Rumor has it we could have it by the end of this week.
Glad your dad is doing a bit better.

Deb, good luck to Nick on his first day of high school! :wizard:

DS LOVES his school. LOVES it. But we are having some epic battles over homework and staying organized. He has 9 different courses so there is A LOT going on. He hasn't figured out that he HAS TO do things as they are assigned instead of putting them off until they are due. He was mad that I made him finish an essay today that is due Tuesday. I am strongly encouraging him to use his planner and write down EVERYTHING, because even though I verbally go class by class with him every day he still forgets things.

He seems OK riding the bus. He likes most of his teachers (the Costume instructor is VERY stern and strict, the Math teacher is dull, the Geography teacher mumbles, the others are fine). I think he may join the Film Club, and he is already talking about going to a dance at school next month. He NEVER wanted to go to a dance in middle school. He is definitely in his element. He has made a few new friends. I am sure he will get to know a lot more kids in the next few weeks. Since they are on an A/B schedule he has only been to his A classes 3 times and his B classes twice.

I'm glad that DS is doing well this year. I hope Nick comes home happy.

If you do I would love it...we have one but it doesn't have a cover and I want to make sure it's as protected as it can be.

In all of the supply lists it states pen drive but than gives the explanation and it's a usb/flash drive description:confused3 I figure it's just another to confuse us. :rotfl:

actually it's probably more likely for kids like Abi...the smell of rubbing alcohol is one of her allergy triggers...in fact it's one of the worst ones for her. But, I agree, teachers have to worry about so much more and different things.

Good Morning!!:goodvibes

I have felt icky for the last four or five days but seem to be on the healing end of it. I am sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

I hope Nick has a great first day of school:thumbsup2 I hope you figure out transportation...2 hours seems a bit ridiculous.

Vicki-I love thrift stores for exactly that reason...finding the perfect something and paying a partial price for it.

I hope everybody has awesome weeks!!:lovestruc

Hi everyone!

Deb - congrats on the new camper. Looks great!

Bernadette - I love the Mickey shaped fruit! I hope your pin removal goes smoothly.

Elizabeth - it sounds like you made the right choice for DS. Glad to hear that he is enjoying it.

Stephanie - I can't imagine why you would be spending so much time on the cruise board. ;)

Theresa - I'm so sorry to hear about your great uncle.

Elin - I posted the picture last night on FB. Sorry to make you wade through so many DIS posts.

I'm glad to hear that all the kids are settling in to the new school year. We still have the rest of this week to enjoy summer.

So as most of you know I bought a new car last night, a Toyota Highlander. I've been waffling between that, the Mazda cx9 and the Kia Sorento. Each had their own pros/cons, but after much thought/research the Highlander won out. I love it! I'm suffering from tremendous anxiety over it though. I put a huge down payment to keep the monthly payments down, so that wiped out 2/3s of my savings. I haven't had to deal with a car payment for 10 years, so I guess I'm suffering from sticker shock.

I'm also switching the kids' daycare to cut costs. We visited the new one last week and they really seemed to like it. It's nice. They will know kids from school there. I'm the one dealing with the emotional issues of leaving where they have been for the past 5 years. They have been so good to us and have done a wonderful job with my kids. It's almost as if I'm going through a break-up. So lots of changes that I'm adapting to.

Hmm. I am not sure where to get sanitizer without alcohol. Maybe Whole Foods or somewhere? But I bet it is expensive. Our middle school had to get rid of the dry erase markers because the kids were inhaling the fumes.
