I wish!!

Um are those books made of gold? :scared1:

Yes....we pay for books. I also pay a fee for both the elementary school & the middle school. I'd say those 2 fees are probably $300+ ea. I pay $175 for Kirsten's "lunchroom fee" this is not for food mind you...but for supervision. That fee annoys me the most!! When I had 3 in that school at the same time, it was a killer.

Public school. You can keep the books.....or turn them back in at the end of the year and get a small portion of the fee returned.

These schools are some of the best in IL. And this community has changed to be very affluent....so no one seems to complain (at least out loud) lol. I try to go with the flow...and not get too jacked up....but it does annoy me slightly.....

I pay around $7000 in taxes.....which again baffles me as to the exorbitant extra fees.

What can I say....I thought everyone pays these high fees :rotfl:

You have to pay for high school books?! That is crazy! What are your school taxes like? I guess the leap to paying for college textbooks won't seem quite as bad for you. Do you get to keep these books or is it a "rental" fee?

ETA: That sounded kind of personal. I didn't mean your personal school taxes, but a general for your area.

ETA2: Is this a public or private school? I still can't get over having to spend that much for high school books!

WOW! My eyes have been opened. We pay nothing over our school taxes (that aren't that high, though we have a tiny house) except for the "standard" school supplies (notebooks, pens, paper, etc). I can't even imagine paying extra for someone to supervise my kids in the lunchroom. Those are school employees that are paid from our tax dollars. WOW!

Any possibility that those books can still be used next year? Are there many that sell their used books?

Chris is 3 years behind Jackie and she is on an all accelerated track...so I don't want to keep the books. We will turn them back in for a small credit.

You can work in the lunchroom to get a fee reduction....but that is one job that does not appeal to me at all.:scared1:

I missed this the first time. Do you pay registration for public school or is it private?

public...and they've gone down...both girls were $41 for mandatory fees (including the outdoor course that I will let Abi out of if she wants too)..Cassidy has $210 for band (which is the cheapest in the district) and we will have cap & gown and other fees that will come up as school goes on.

I definitely see why you want to stay away from a middle school lunchroom. :scared1: So, you are really paying a fee for "volunteers" in a way.

For the books, I was thinking of my two who are two years apart and take many of the same courses. Over $1000 in books/year would have just about done me in.

I'm understanding more now why people find "back to school" so expensive. We don't do all our clothes shopping at one time and have comparatively little to buy in the way of supplies. I'm feeling very lucky all of a sudden.

yep...this year with: 1 in college, 1 in high school, 1 in middle school & 1 in elementary school....the fees have been "interesting" to say the least

We did have to pay for cap and gown (total rip-off for what you get, by the way, but what can you do?). For high school band, they need to own their own instruments, but the high school orchestra has enough (well, violas anyway. I guess I don't really know about the other instruments) to lend for free. In elementary/middle school you can rent any band/orchestra instrument for $50/school year. There are several instruments that "rent" free, because it's harder to find kids to learn those.

I think there might be fees associated with marching band, but I don't know that for sure.

Ok, I'll stop whining about the one in college. Especially since he chose a state school. Tuition is a very good deal. Now room/board and fees aren't such a great deal, but if I look at the whole picture...

High school books for Jackie: $562.50! Doesn't that seem unbelievable??!!

I wish!!

Wow I've never heard of book fees for a public school. All of the books here are covered by the school. We don't have any tuition fees either. Here we pay for basic supplies and all of their field trip. The field trips are usually about $75/year per kid. All in all not bad compared to some of you :scared1: We pay about $4500 in property taxes here.

The sun is shining so I guess it's time to take the boys to the pool.

Freshmen year in college for Jonathan...the room & board exceeded tuition by quite a bit. The last couple of years he has had his own apartment....which comes out a tad cheaper

Yes, we're definitely going to look into apartments next year. They are required to be on campus and on the meal plan for their first year. I think that I could buy a house and have the mortgage payments be almost cheaper than the room/board!

Janet - HS yearbooks were $60 back in 2004 around here. I don't know what they are up to now.

Is anyone else having issues with photobucket? I cannot even get onto the website through IE or Firefox. And no photos from there are showing up on the DIS for me.

I have friends who did just that!

it's fine for me Elin...

I'm seeing all the photos, and I just was able to log into photobucket on Firefox.

I doubt we'll end up doing that, but it is worth considering. Especially if there are a couple of trustworthy friends that will pay rent. It depends on what is available, cost, housing market at the time, forecast for that area, etc.

ok, riddle me this... can you all see my monorail and my photo in my siggy?
