DDA Chapter 22

Tammi - The robotics club sounds neat!

DS did his first audition for the school play yesterday. He has to do another audition today - all of the kids are required to do 2 auditions. He has a ton of theater CLASS experience, but almost no stage experience. He has never been in a full-length production. So we'll see. On the one hand I hate for him to be required to invest 2 hours after school for weeks on end for some bit part with no lines. On the other hand, he has to start somewhere. He thought about being in Peter Pan 2 years ago (as Nana/crocodile) but he balked at the time commitment. I do think he would have fun, even with a minor part or doing sets, lights, props, etc.

Of course he has no clue when she will announce the casting. I did see on the paper he brought home yesterday that they are double casting, which is what the professional theater does. I guess then the 2 actors cast in each part sort of "compete" and whoever does better is rewarded with more performances. That is NOT what the professional theater does.

Good morning. :)

Deb - nice pictures. That place looks A LOT like Great Wolf Lodge. Ours has the same surf type place.

Nicholas has some sort of poison ivy type skin rash. He's been developing it since the weekend and last night I took him to the doctor. She didn't say "poison ivy" but a few of the very small blisters look like what I had last summer. It's weird though. I have NO IDEA where he would have gotten into it. It's on the knuckles of his right hand, a few spots on his arms and legs, and then little teeny red bumps over his extremities. At least it's not itching him too badly. Just more annoying than anything. Now he is on prednisone and zyrtec. I hope he doesn't have the same side effects from the pred. that I had.

Nicholas also got invited to join the robotics club at school. This club is for 4th graders and is part of the accelerated math program. Evidently they will be making and programming robots to do a variety of challenges. Several retired engineers from a local naval base will be assisting the kids. He's excited about it and it sounds like a great learning experience. The club meets once a week after school, so I'm going to need to find a friend that he can go home with until I can pick him up.

Tammi, If you had it last summer and maybe set aside clothing or something like that, the poision stays until the clothing is washed. Anything you might have touched but not washed still has the poision. I remember my oldest Howie had thrown a rag in a pile, forgot about it and he had a real bad case of poision. The next month, he put the pile of rags in the wash but had forgotten about that specific rag and got it again.

Tammi - I have a lot of students and one co-worker suffering with poison ivy-like symptoms. None of the doctors are calling it poison ivy for some odd reason! One little guy came into his lesson last night with it all around his eye and in his eye. Needless to say the doctor took a very aggressive treatment regimen with him! I hope Nicholas is not too uncomfortable. And tell him I said CONGRATS on being selected for the robotics team! :yay:

Elizabeth - I hope C does well with his follow-up audition!!

I too was sad to hear that Mary Travers died. I remember playing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" on my guitar freshman year of college. Henry Gibson, of old Laugh-In fame also died. With Patrick Swayze that makes three this week. :(

Thanks, Elin! I had him read the paper to me in the car and it says they are double casting 6 principal roles, not the whole cast. It does not say WHICH 6 roles! So whatever.

In checking our flight times on AirTran this morning I discovered a couple of things. There was a fare reduction for my early December flights so I called and got the $30 credit applied to my account. So, that means I only paid a grand total of $79.20 for my RT ticket for that weekend! :yay:

I also found that my return flight had been changed without my knowledge or any contact from them. I was booked on a non-stop flight and still am. But (and this is a huge change), that flight has been canceled and now I am booked on a non-stop that is "subject to FFA approval." I asked the agent what that means in the long run and she assured me that most flights are ultimately approved. If mine isn't they will happily switch me to another flight. There is one huge problem with that, however. It is the only early morning non-stop flight they have into Reagan National and I have to have that time. I am teaching that afternoon at 3:00. I can't get into town any later than noon and have it all work out! Come on on FFA!!!

I see that fares have dropped for some of the dates later in December now too. Hmmmm... if we could get a drop for our return date I might book airfare instead of Bob and me driving that trip. Kristin's fare for 12/24 has not changed at all. Still $109. I am thinking she ought to book it soon. I have $30 in credit and a $15 voucher that has to be used by December 31. That would drop her price considerably. But it would also make a nice dent in RT airfare for Bob and me. ;)

Elin, yay for cheaper flights! I hope they approve the other non-stop soon. How odd - I have never heard of that before.

11 weeks until our December trip!! :dance3: Hmm. If DS gets a good role for the play that could mean missing 3 rehearsals (Thur, Fri, and Mon). Not sure if they will rehearse every single day or not. The paper said they will rehearse until 6 PM - it did NOT say when they start or how many days a week it will be. The show isn't until February. If he misses 5 he gets cut from the cast. Guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. :confused3

I have started putzing around with the US/IOA plan for next year. Need to pick a hotel for 3 nights.

I wish we could fly on December 18. I have a $25 voucher left over that I could use if we flew that day. But I just can't see adding on another night to save $25. Even my WDW math isn't that fuzzy. :rotfl:

Apparently it happens all the time, but most airlines haven't posted it before. They have to have approval when they add new destinations or are taking over slots from another company. Maybe there is a new law that says they have to post it now. :confused3

Are they really starting rehearsals that early for a February show? That is a LONG time to work on a show for kids that age.

Kristin told me yesterday that she might have to go over to the dark side when HP opens next year. :rotfl2:

I am sure I can help you figure out some convoluted way to justify it if you want me to! :rotfl2:

At Open House she said the show will be in February. I was rather befuddled when DS said auditions are NOW. Especially since the high school is doing "Beauty and the Beast" and the middle schoolers were told they could audition for that. That show is in November. I know when they did Peter Pan the rehearsals were only every day for 2 weeks prior. :confused3 If her communication skills are on par with the Band director we are in for a rough ride. :rotfl2:

Elin - Airtran is so wacky lately, that is why I won't book them. I've read horror stories about peoples flights getting changed/canceled drastically. I hope that your flight gets 'approved'!

Elizabeth - good luck on the auditions!

:wizard:Good luck with the rash

My boys would be so jealous of the robotics club. It sounds like fun :goodvibes

They can be wacky, but they are also easy to work with. If they have changed anything in the past we have always been able to get something that worked as well or better or have had the option of canceling without penalties. I have to assume, based on my experience today, that their CS is still that good. I can hope, anyway! :rotfl2:

Good Morning, DDA!!

Progress reports came home yesterday and I gotta say I was right in my assesment of Abi's LA teacher....not only is she weird, she's mean and hard to talk to. Abi has a D+ right now in that class :headache:and it sounds like most of it's from the teacher's inability to listen. :headache:

Abi is trying out for jazz band today on piano...she's got the tryout pieces mastered. What a boost in her confidence it would be to with the jazz band.

oh, I forgot to add....I survived 2 days with Jim at home (it probably says something that I had to type Jim three times because I kept typing Him). I only wanted to kill him yesterday:rolleyes1

Good luck to Abi on the audition. And good luck with the LA teacher!

I haven't booked the airfare yet. It shows the discount available for only one ticket on the way down so that is not so good! Also car rental is running over $800 for the week! Not going to pay that, not even for Bob! :rotfl:
