Good Morning DDA!

Thanks for all the heartfelt Anniversary wishes! We really appreciated them!

Love seeing all the photos from your recent trips! We are getting really excited now!

Weather here has been kind of wonky! Either freezing cold or warm and rainy. It has cooled down quite a bit this morning already. Hopefully we won't get the freezing rain that they are predicting for a short time this morning.

My kids both learned their letters simply by doing letter puzzles. We had one of the wooden ones.

I will look for the video. I'm hoping to get to staples at some point to look for a game. I know that any game will totally keep his attention.

He's done the letter puzzles for years. He also does wipe off letter books. He really does a nice job of writing his letters, the problem is that he doesn't know which letter he just wrote

And pictures! Does he have a photographic memory?

Even if he had a photographic memory he is no artist so I'm thinking they would be unrecognizable. Maybe he could take a few art lessons from you

My kids always used Leapster electronic toys & books when they were little & that was very helpful.

Regarding CSR being like POR. I got the opposite feeling at CSR.

POR is shady & feels more woodsy & dark. CSR is bright, warm tones, & sunny.

POR seems more spread out. CSR is big but laid out well. Trust me I am very bad with directions & I felt CSR easier to navagate.

POR buses are not good. CSR buses were great. Never waited long at all.

If CSR could accomodate 5 people I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Theres a song called "Who Let the Letters Out' By Dr. Jean-It goes through and says "who let the _ out? Then it does the sound repeatedly..My kids love that and it helps some of them remember. Like others said, the flashcards are great--i have kids that would do flashcards all the time if i let them.
With writing the letters--i have some kids that use playdough to form the letters then they write them. I have others that use letter stamps and stamp letters on the paper and then trace them. I have a few children that could only write the letter if he/she was looking at it...what i did was sit with them and have the letter flashcard and had them say "this is A" and write it. I made them say the letter so itw asnt just copying a letter, they could relate it to a letter name. As we went on, i would cover up small parts of the letter until only a little bit then no parts of the letter were showing. it seemed to help

The big thing is repitition. Let me know if you need more help!


Morning everyone! I was asleep by 9:30 last night!

I'm going to look for the song and the video. Flash cards really don't seem to be his thing. Trust me I've tried everything that worked with the older two. Then again they didn't have any problems whatsoever learning letters, numbers or anything else. I've always said that if Colby was my first child he would have been my last

Glad you had a good night at work. Have you tried letting him write the letters in shaving cream in the bathtub or shower? There are three methods of learning letters/reading at Shelton, and one of them involves taking a small, flat, smooth board and letting the kids trace the letters with their fingers, either with the flashcard lettering, or doing it without tracing anything. It sounds like you've had good advice. I hope you start seeing improvement soon.

I made peanut butter balls for Andrew last night, as he asked for them on his last evening before he gets his braces today. Since he has sensory issues, I'm really not looking forward to this. Luckily, they are much more minor then when he was little, so maybe it won't be as big a deal as I fear.

Anyone have a nice, small digital camera? Laura wants one, and I don't know much about them. I'd like to keep it under $200 but still have a good quality camera. I have done a little looking around, and I think I like the Canon SD1100 or the Canon SD770. But I don't really know anything about the compact cameras.

Deb, I don't know if Colby likes to get on the computer or not, but Leighanna LOVES this site! It has helped her alot with her reading and letter recognition! I have also made her custom writing paper with some of her favorite characters or seasons using this site.

Miles loved it, but he is only 9. He has a couple of friends who are 11 and enjoyed it. I don't think that Laura read it. I read it so long ago that I can't remember if it was good. I didn't read the new one yet.

Olivia is having the same problem as Colby. She can write them pretty good but can not seem to remember what they are. Except OLIVIA. so thanks for the tips as well.

Yes, yes, yes! Given the many times she's been to WDW, this book would be perfect for her! I loved it, and I read it before I'd been to WDW! There's a sequel, too, but I can't review that one. It's waiting for me under the tree!

DS has it and really enjoyed it! He is getting the sequel for Christmas. I read Kingdom Keepers before he did, and I liked it. Yes, it is youth fiction, but I didn't think it was TOO juvenile.

Marci - Good luck with the braces! DS got a "freebie" day the day after he had his put on because his mouth was really sore. He wouldn't have been able to concentrate (or eat lunch) so I kept him home. Make sure you have plenty of Advil on hand!


Deb - The therapists that worked with my former charge did 2 things with letters. They had him stand up and write the letters in the air with his hand (arm extended so he was using his shoulder joint), and they also cut letters (about 3 or 4 inches high) out of fine grain sand paper and had him trace the letters with his finger tip. The tactile experience helps reinforce the names and shapes of the letters in their brains (or something like that).

I had my dinning room window open, the kitchen door was on a crack and I had a bathroom fan going also. The smell wasn't to bad.

Well the snow stopped and its all rain. Any snow and ice that we did have is now gone and its pretty warm too. 51º

Thanks ladies..I will get it for her. I am getting her Twilight & New Moon. She hasn't read those but asked about them the other day. She has been hard to buy for this year because unlike my other 2 she did not write a note for Santa.

I got Daniel a few books from the "Adventures of Ordinary boy", HP & the Deathly Hallows, Beettle of the Bard (HP) & the new 39 Clues book.

Sophie wanted "The Giving Tree". I found one at Amazon with a CD read along. I also found this cute Bolt book at my store but it was $20 (even with my CM discount it would be $18) but I found it online for $13. It's called "One Ridiculous Adventure". So I got that for Sophie too.

I am wrapping & trying to see if everything looks even. Ok back to wrapping!

He loves to play on the computer. I'll have him try it this afternoon

We are having good luck with the car game that we came up with too. I have him tell me a lette on each road sign that we see. It might be the first letter of the first word or the second letter of the first word, etc. Yesterday he was able to recognize more than one letter on a sign. And he loves it.
