DD5 needs glasses--but for how long?

DD got glasses when she was 5 (now7). She is near and farsighted and has an astigmatism. If you are concerned with Budget, here is my story: Her first pair of glasses were mostly covered by insruance. They lasted about a month until she lost them at the Rodeo going down aninflatable slide. I too didnt want to pay the $250, so we took her prescription to costco and paid $116 just for frames. This time I chosse frames that were flexible. Four months later, she had a follow up appointment. The optometrist found that her prescription was lower, s she would need new glasses. Not just lenses, but frames too. The Flexible frames had gotten so loose, they would fall off her face when she bent down to read. So, I paid the $250 to buy the original pair of glasses she had. The very next day during recess, she was pushed going through the tunnel, glasses fell off and a boy stepped on them!!:scared1: I went into the optemetrist, expecting to have to pay again, but luckily the girl working their said she would send them back as manufacturer's waranty! Thank goodness!!:goodvibes 3 days later DD had her glasses again. she now leaves her glasses inside during recess. Fast Forward to the present. On Wednesday DD took her glasses off because her nose was sweaty.:confused3 Well another boy proceeded to place his hand on top of them so hard that he broke them into 3 pieces!!:headache: Luckily, DD was eligible for new glasses and frames in August.
In closing, glasses are not Budget Friendly. For me, my daughter's vision was much more important than paying out of pocket for glasses.

My dd was patched for a year, before surgery, which was a piece of cake! A friend's dd wore glasses for a lazy eye, but ended up with the surgery. After a year of trying to patch a crying 2 year old, I wish we just did the surgery right away!

Right now she is not in need of patching or vision therapy. Her eye muscles seem to be working fine, it's more a matter of having different refractive errors in both eyes, which if not corrected could lead to her brain ignoring the "lazier" eye and therefore the vision in it worsening. She does not have strabismus--or turning of the eye. I plan on having her leave her glasses in her backpack during recess and I do expect that somewhere along the way a pair will get broken or lost--but hopefully not too soon! Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions. One more thing to add to the old budget.

I ordered her glasses through the eye doctor yesterday - I really want her everyday pair to be from his office. That is what she'll wear most of the time--I think I might order a pair of sunglasses for her through Zenni though and have the eye doctor check them for me to be sure they're ok.

Excellent idea! I always recommend people do this for younger children when they are getting glasses from a discount place. I say this because when I was little they messed up on my prescription and luckily my mom had my regular eye doctor make sure they were correct. My daughter has glasses now and I do the same thing. Actually when I was there someone else was doing it too so it must be fairly common.

My daughter has had her glasses since right before she turned two. She is farsighted with a lazy eye. She was patched for about a year. She has had glasses for almost three years now and has only lost one pair. She has had four pair total. Replacements were only due to growing or prescription changes. My daughter is not rough with her glasses so I think that just depends on the child. Now her eye doctor says that she may grow out of needing glasses but since I still need them the chances are not so great.
