Anyone do DIsney Digital Books? Thoughts? I'm thinking of either maybe doing this for DD for Christmas or a leapfrog Tag system. She is really interested in learning how to read, so I would love to do something for her. I don't know which one...if any I should do!

DGS just turned 4 and is starting to read. He has the Fisher Price power touch and really likes it. It was a hand me down so i am not really sure how current the system is. He however really prefers just reading really simple books with me. We are big on phonics and we sound out the words and he is so proud when he gets it! The BOB series is a great first reading set. Your local library also will have a lot of first readers you can start with. Use phonics as well as sight words and picture clues to give your child the best chance at success. Remember to keep it fun. They have plenty of time to learn.

You can usually find a code for a trial of Disney Digital. We have done it (maybe a few times :rolleyes1) and I like the set-up, the books look great, lots of stories, various levels, DS5 has been interested for quite a while. But it seems too expensive to me.
We have a Tag reader that DS got last Christmas. He really liked it then but seems to be playing with it even more now. His favorite feature is that the pen will "read" a full story without the book. He takes it to bed and it reads him to sleep. DD3 is now playing with it so I just bought her some Tag books tonight. On sale at TRU for $9.99 and then I used the $3 off coupon from leapfrog (must log in or create a leapfrog acct).

Here's a $10 off the Tag at Target.

Here's a $5 for Tag books (if the link wont let you print watch the video about the car and then you can).

Sorry I haven't used either yet but if you decide to go with the tag. Tomorrow Target starts a new sale. Tag Books are BOGO. Some are down to $9.99. There are $5 off coupons too. If you go to Chevy's website and take a virtual tour of the Traverse, its only like 45 seconds. After you register to win, you can print 2 - $5.00 coupons. If not the new Parents magazine has a $3.00 inside too. My DS (4) will be getting it this year. I can't say I'm a huge fan but its all he talks about. GL with your search.

BOB books.

I will 3rd the Bob Books. I don't think any electronic game or item is as good as parent or adult sitting down with a child and helping him or her read. My son is 5 and just started kindergarten. He learned to read with the Bob Books and was just tested for reading and literacy. He scored very high (101 out of 102). We read to him a lot.

I don't think any electronic learning system even comes close to a parent, older sibling or other adult sitting down with a child and reading with them. Our kids get sucked into electronics sooner and more completely. At least give them that initial phase of human interaction when learning to read. :)

I think it all depends on the child. Our DD was diagnosed with ADHD at 4 and couldn't sit still for long enough to have a book read to her. We did continue to read to her, and she would occasionally look through a book for a few minutes on her own. We figured out quickly that she loved interactive/tactile learning systems or computer games. Most of the time, I would be right there with her, helping when she couldn't do it just right. For us, the systems such as Leap Pad and V-Smile were a godsend. Oh, and it must have worked for her. She's now in 2nd grade and tested on a 6th grade reading level at the beginning of the school year.

I used Hooked on Phonics kits with both of my kids. I started the kindergarten kits with them when they were four, because they knew all their letters and sounds and were ready to start putting letters together. The lessons are easy enough for parents to follow and the kids do great. My kids have both been very successful using HOP and are reading above grade level. I recommend them highly!

P.S. I am a teacher and am halfway to my reading endorsement, so I guess you could call this a professional opinion, even though I just used it with my own kids. :goodvibes
