DD1 broke her arm at school on monday. She had the cast put on yesterday and the doctor is very hopeful that 4 weeks will be long enough for her bones to mend as it wasn't a 'bad' break. We go away on the 6th of August so we have a couple of weeks grace if all goes to plan...

Just thinking of the worst case scenario though (as you do!!!), if she still needs a cast when we are due to go, is she ok to fly with a cast on? Obviously she wouldn't be able to go in the pool..... also wondering if it was due to come off whilst we were away would that be possible :confused3...

I'm afraid my brain has gone into 'broken arm' overdrive :lmao: not sure why as I am 99.9% sure all will be well by August :thumbsup2

Anyone have any experiences to put my mind at rest!!! Please!! :goodvibes

My husband broke his ankle beforenour 2009 trip and it was touch and go if the cast was off but the doctor told us that if he still needed a cast then he could get a removable one for the flight as his leg would expand so she might be able to have a similar thing on her arm

Reading your post it got me thinking that SOMETHING always happens before we are due to go on holiday. A few years ago DD11 broke her arm about six weeks before we were due to fly to Paris to go to DLP. We were ever so relieved when her cast came off and the Dr said that her arm was healing nicely (she actually broke her left arm twice that year). Last year ,before we flew to Orlando, my sister had to stay in hospital. We are flying out to Orlando next Wednesday and we've just heard that DH's dad has pneumonia. We've been told to go ahead with our holiday but it doesn't stop us from worrying about him and DMiL who is recovering from surgery herself.:guilty:

Just one thing - You can get cast covers so that she can shower and also go into the pool.
I'd hate to think that with it being so hot, she couldn't go for a swim!!
They're pretty easy to use

Fingers crossed it's off for when you go :goodvibes

Thanks, a friend just told me about these covers, found them on ebay :thumbsup2 Will probably get one anyway just so she can have a 'proper' bath/shower although I did warn her teacher that if there is a strange smell in the classroom in a week or twos time, it might be my unwashed DD :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:

Thanks everyone :goodvibes

I hope your relatives make a speedy recovery and you manage to 'enjoy' your holiday :goodvibes

Best wishes :goodvibes

That was the worst part for my DD11. She had really long hair then and it was a nightmare to wash it over the sink!

Just wanted to say Best Wishes for a Speedy Recovery to your DD and have a great holiday :)

Almost snap!! My DD (10) broke her wrist last week during a lesson on tribal dances (you couldn't make it up) and we fly out on 9th August!

My DD has a 'soft cast' on which I can cut off myself (DD is very worried about me coming at her with scissors) after 4 weeks. Her break is a 'non-displaced buckle fracture' which heals in 4 weeks. I belive a 'greenstick fracture' takes longer and needs 6 weeks in a cast.

As for shower/bath - I've been using bread bags (the ones that sliced loves come in), sellotape and then clingfilm round the whole thing. It's worked a treat, even when DD forgot and completely dunked her arm in the bath. It is only her wrst though and the cast stops short of her elbow so it might not work for your DD. The only thing I didn't do the first time was empty the breadcrumbs out of the bag - DD was not amused :rotfl::rotfl:

Hope your DD soon gets used to her cast - for my DD the novelty and the attention have now worn off and she's counting down the days until it comes off and she can get back to her swimming lessons. Her swimming teacher said that once the cast is off swimming one of the best exercises to build the strength back up because the water will support the arm.

 Wishing your daughter a speedy recovery.

My sister has used those bags on her arm when she got a severe burn. She used them for showers and then also so that she could go in the pool on her holiday. :thumbsup2

Many thanks for all your replies :goodvibes

I've ordered a 'protectacast' so at least she can have a proper bath/shower and then if the worst happens, we also have it for the holiday.....

We will speak to her swimming teacher on saturday, we were hoping she would resume her classes as soon as the cast is off but I doubt she will be returning to ju jitsu anytime soon :scared1:

Thanks again.
