Yes, I'm a wimp! My 16 DD is getting her wisdom teeth out tomorrow and I'm afraid I'll get queasy taking care of her. I'm putting on a brave face for her and I've stocked up on smoothies, advil, ice packs and frozen bags of peas. What else should I do?

I want to ask the oral surgeon if there are drugs for the mom too :)

:grouphug: Hugs for you & your DD. My only advice is to make sure she doesn't drink those smoothies through straws!

My daughter (age 17) had her wisdom teeth out this past summer. She would do anything to avoid taking pain medication, and the pain got the best of her because she wanted to wait and see if she needed it. Keep the pain medication going in for at least 1-2 days.

Also, she kept bleeding. We tried the tea bags, and it worked! Soak tea bags in ice cold water for a minute or two, and then have her place them on the area between her upper and lower jaws and close gently and hold there. The bleeding stopped, and my daughter actually slept for a while like this. She can't stand tea, and it gave her a lot of relief.

The first couple of days are rough, but you two will get through it. Good luck :grouphug:

my twin sons are getting theirs out on Friday. And they are still hoping to go to a friends for a NYE party. I'm worried since they are both 18yo college students who really don't want this done. They are both nervous about the anaesthesia. So now i am. I asked them what foods they want and they're like, I don't care. So i'll be making jello, smoothies, pudding and chicken noodle soup. It's a very busy time of year for oral surgeons since alot of college kids get this done over break.

My younger DS needs to have his out. Now that he has a real job, he'll have to see what kind of insurance coverage he has! When older DS had his out at age 16 or 17, he went out the night after it was done. I couldn't believe it! He was no good for about 10 hours - slept - but then he was OK. Go figure! When I had mine out (a million years ago) I can remember waking up and reaching for my little bottle of pills, but they weren't there! My sister had taken them, she was worried that I'd wake up and take too many. So, I had to stumble around the house, looking for my little pills! Good thing they've improved the technique and the drugs since then!

Hang in there! (She'll probably come through just fine - you'll have wasted all this worrying!)

I got mine out last year, the day before thanksgiving--I did it on break from college as well..
I had a rough time, even though i followed all of the instructions from the dr.
I got all of mine out at once and was eating applesauce, jello, etc for a few days, due to infection..
My advice--TAKE THE PILLS!! It made a huge difference when i took them.
I basically slept the first 3 days and tehre was no chance iw as going out!

I was still in pain a few days later, so went to the dentist--had a problem ,they fixed it..so if prolonged pain, go back!

what is everyone's thoughts on getting all 4 teeth out at once versus getting 2 out at a time (one side, then the other side at a later date)? My parents are pretty adamant about having it done two at a time...but i'm pretty sure once i do it on one side, i wont want to go back again to do it on the other side

I was supposed to have them out during winter break my senior year (so 2 years ago) but I got the flu...so now I really have to get it done! Just kind of nervous about it...

Just do it all at once, IMHO. Get it over with. I had all four out when I was a teenager and it wasn't too bad. Painkillers were your friends. If they aren't impacted, you just need to be careful about the 4 big holes that get left in your mouth. (They heal up in short order)

All 4 at once, you are crazy to do 2 and 2. It wasn't so bad, just uncomfortable but I'm glad that I only had to go through it once. I don't think I could have been ok the first time knowing I would have to do it again.

I swear a lot of it is the power of positive thinking- if you *know* you will have horrible pain and that you will be so swollen it will probably happen. If you think that you will be on painkillers for a few days and will swell up and be uncomfortable you will do so much better.

It depends on who is going to extract the teeth ( a general dentist or an oral surgeon). If a general dentist is pulling the teeth they will only do one side at a time (2 at a time) because you can not numb up the whole mouth without running the risk of the patient chewing the oral cavity and sustaining massive trauma.

If an oral surgeon is extracting the teeth, I would recommend having them all out at once while you are knocked out.

The General dentist is going to save you a WHOLE lot of money if the teeth are not impacted......we charge 150.00/per tooth and insurance willl usually cover 80% of that AFTER the deductable.

An oral surgeon is going to be ALOT more....but some people prefer to be put to sleep and if a tooth is bony impacted...it is preferred that an oral surgeon do the extractions.

BTW- I am a Dental Hygienist and my dad is a Dentist. :wave2:

When I was 16 I had 6, yes 6 wisdom teeth pulled! Out of 6 four were impacted. It really was nothing for me and I actually have pictures of me the next day at a friend's graduation party. Everyone is different and it was luckily not a big deal for me.

My friends DS13 just had 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled and it was nothing. Interestingly enough he had the same doctor take his out as I did 17 years ago!!

Good luck and be strong for your daughter. If this is the worst thing that you ever have to watch her go through consider yourself lucky!!!! :goodvibes

I would say do them all at once--I went to an oral surgeon and was knocked out for the procedure...I only had 3 wisdom teeth apparently-got them all at once because i knew i probably wouldnt go back to get the rest out

I had mine done in college at the dental school. I don't remember my mother having to do anything to take care of me, I took care of everything myself. I am sure your DD can do the same - or at least the bulk of her care with proper instruction.

I also recommend doing all 4 at the same time. DH had his done at the dental school, too - with only local anesthesia. He walked out and went to work the next day.

Hope your daughter's surgery is quick, easy and relatively painless. And that mom has a good experience, too.

My DS19 just had his taken out earlier this year and I have to say, it was a piece of cake. The "anesthesia" they use is really a combination of sedatives & pain meds, not general anesthesia. DS tried to be tough and not take pain medicine afterward--that was a mistake  Once he figured that out, it was smooth sailing. He changed his own gauze, slept a lot, and watched TV with his sister. The next day he felt well enough to hang out with friends.

Luckily I only had to have one tooth removed and I tell you what, I would rather give birth than do that again!

I was put asleep and my tooth was one of the hardest types to remove ( cant remember what they called it ) so they slipped trying to cut it out and sliced my cheeck and had to stitch that up. I was in a lot of pain, I went home and layed on the couch and slept and bled. I think the only thing I ate was pudding , the cold made my mouth feel better.

I also ended up having dry socket for the next two weeks and had to have it packed every few days, that was the most painful as well!!

Give me a root canal or having birth to a 10lb baby with no meds( have done both) anyday over getting one wisdom tooth pulled! :rotfl:

i couldnt think of what that was called--i had the dry socket as well--having it packed was not fun at all!

Good Luck to all of your children who are getting their wisdom teeth out this week! Hugs to all of them and parents too!

DS had his out Junior Year Summer, 4 at a time and they were impacted, plus he needed quite extensive surgery to make room for more teeth (a 1 1/2 slit) so 16 yo molars would come down. He's 18 and those molars are still growing in.

He liked to sip on clear liquids for a couple of days, anything clear because his stomach was upset from the anesthesia.

Let us know how they all make out!

Update...

DD had her wisdom teeth out this morning and is doing great. It may be the pain meds but so far she seems ok. She was a bit nervous about the IV but she said that went well and she didn't remember anything after that. So far she has had some Jamba Juice and is keeping an ice pack on her face. She's had a dose of her pain meds and will get another dose in about an hour. She is a real trooper and I am so proud of her!

I actually survived too and didn't get queasy wihich is a miricle in itself :)

Thank you all so much for your advice and concern!

Elise

I'm glad that you made it through the first part of the ordeal. My advice to you is that insist that your DD take it easy for a few days. My DS had his wisdom teeth out last week (in a 2 hour surgery) and felt way too good the day after. So much so that he went to a party and tried to gum some pizza. He came home with swollen cheeks and it took two days for him to recover from the party. The pain meds may make your DD feel like she can return to normal activities much sooner than she should. She will be much better off if she just cools her jets for a couple of days.

DS is doing just fine 5 days post op. It is truly amazing how quickly the mouth heals.
