Not withstanding the argument as to whether using points for a DCL cruise is the best use of points - if I am booking two cabins and plan to use points to "pay" for one cabin, do you book your cash cabin when you make your points ressie or would it be better to book it separately thru a regular travel agent?
It will be cheaper for an all cash reservation to go through a regular travel agent. The only downside will be getting the two rooms you want (especially if you need connecting rooms). Just be a little more work.
Get a cash price for the room/rooms you want. You may want to book them both at the first opportunity using cash then cancel what you don't need later.
Options include:
Book both using cash.
Book one with points and one with cash.
Book one person in each room with points and pay the cash price through DVC.
Book all by points.
[/list=1] Number one is likely the cheapest in the long run. Option 3 is likely the most expensive. When the time comes to book with points you can see what options you have for cabins, you may be able ot rearrange them to get one cash and one points rooms together. What I wouldn't do is wait until the 11 month window and then start trying to book, you may lose out in a number of ways if you take that choice.
Although it may not be the cheapest way to book, we booked one room on points through DVC and the other through DCL using cash. We were able to link the two ressies as well as get adjoining rooms. We booked at the 11 mo window for the July 13th 4 day Wonder. I would guess that waiting for the 11 mo window would not be advantageous if it is a high volume time.
