DCL on the debate board

There is a thread on the debate board concerning whether DCL is worth the money. I am losing, and have already posted more than I should. I am terrible at articulating what makes DCL so special--you just have to experience it. Any help in the debate??

Got my tailfeathers fried over there once and not going to even think of going back. Sorry!!!!

I agree-it can be a scary place. I only venture over there about once every 6 weeks, but I just had to contribute to the DCL debate.

The debate turns personal very fast and attitude is very challenging. In my opinion, there isn't a way for a person to take a stand or share an opinion without it becoming a major issue in a hormonal rage.

Each one of us has the right to have our opinion based on whatever convictions we hold to be true, not all of us are personality equipped to put on battle gear and get into a rage.

My issue with them was the fact that as active duty military veterans my DH and I were AGAINST the war. Last year I spoke out and realized that the debate board was not for me. I am still AGAINST the war, not against the soldiers who are following orders but the entire concept of war where innocents are killed, left orphaned or widowed - on either side and in the middle. This is based on my religious beliefs and personal experiences during the Vietnam Conflict.

As I watched a dear friend bury her soldier son a few months ago, a son who attended school with my oldest son, my convictions against the war strengthened. The widow of the soldier, a young pregnant mother holding her toddler and numb from the shock. It was wrong and remains wrong.

I am and will always be a patriot, but I am a Catholic first and foremost and follow my God regardless.

So that's why I stay away from the debate board -

Just had a quick look at the thread and it seems to me that some people have never tried DCL so can't really comment. My daughter (who is only 15 but very mature and has very reasoned opinions) found herself flamed on the debate board for expressing her opinion which happened to be different to that of some others. I'm sure many of the people on that board are perfectly reasonable but the times I've dipped into it makes me think that there are also a goodly number of folks who think that their's is the only opinion that counts.

Those of us that know the magic of DCL know what we know and if others can't see it, well that just means more cruises for us.

You hit the nail on the head, Karen!
My motto is "I'd fight to the death your right to be wrong!" but after being over there, I've had to rethink who I'd say that too!!!
There are some people who flatly refuse to at least accept that the person had a different opinion based on their individual perceptions - and not all of them are on the debate board!!!!!!

No worries I am on my way! I'll make them "Run away, Run away!" Sorry, just watched Monthy Python and the holy grail!

For what it's worth I've added my 2 cents. i don't really go over there too often, but the thread didn't seem too out of control so I added to it.

I have never ventured over to the debate board, and the reviews here don't make me want to, but it's an interesting question, and one which I've been asking myself lately. I'm a veteran of 11 DCL cruises, so I obviously like the product a lot, but it seems to me that the prices for DCL, which have always been on the high side, are getting a bit more skewed when compared to similar cruises and itineraries.

For example, the cheapest balcony room you can get right now for a 7-nighter on the Magic for fall 2004 is around $1300. By comparison, HAL's ms Zaandam sails a similar itinerary out of Port Canaveral for under $1000 for a balcony room. DCL's prices used to be more in line with that.

I find myself looking to other lines more recently. I actually opted for the Zaandam this fall and cancelled a reservation on the Magic, saving almost $800 in the process.

To me, DCL is probably still worth it, but the return I'm getting for my dollar seems to be less and less and the prices creep up.

Heck, we don't need to go to the debate board - at times we have pretty good debates over here all by ourselves. Wanna talk about dress for formal night or if you should have to sit with other families at dinner:earseek:

At least those of us who hang out here on the DCL boards respect each others opinions (and I have been accused of being "Harsh" at times when expressing my opinions, but most of the time we are pretty civil with one another). And we support one another - even if we disagree. We have a lot of nice folks here, sounds like some wackos (opps being harsh again) hang out on the debate board.

While I hope to some day cruise on other lines, April will be our 3rd Disney cruise. I'm willing to pay more for their product. I could never put my finger on what exactly keeps me going back to Disney. All I could ever come up with was the Disney magic you experience. Then, when all this stuff was happening with the takeover and Eisner, some one said "its leaving your cares behind once you enter". For me, that finally explains it.

But debates boads are definitely not for me!! Far to passionate a person.

I can hold my own in just about any debate, but scrupulously avoid getting involved in any substantive debates on the Internet. Most are dominated by trolls whose only objective is to "win" the debate (or just out bluster anyone with an opposing view) instead of attempting to gain an understanding of diverse viewpoints AND they revel in the anonymity that allows them to be "tougher" than they could ever imagine in a face-to-face debate. I'm far too accepting of divergent views to enjoy participating such "debates," although I will admit to deriving some amusement from them as an observer.

The additional problem with this particular topic is that there is an extremely high level of subjectivity involved in the answer. These debates are bad enough when there is more objective subject matter.

I stick by the principle of "Don't feed the trolls" and there are trolls aplenty on Internet debate boards.

i went there to back you up NC. i love DCL and thats that. if you cant afford it and have never been on it you shouldn't cry about it. but this is america and they will cry about anything. LOL look at the price of gas over $2 a gallon in california yet no one complains about bottled water. a 16 oz bottle will cost $1 that figures to be over $8 a gallon. we need water more then gas. LOL

It's the lack of casino that increases the price of Disney cruises. Really! On other lines they make a lot of money from the on-board casino. Since Disney doesn't have a casino they have to recoup that money somewhere, and they do it by increasing the fare.

Now that $300 difference comes out to about $43 a day, and I'd probably spend more than that in the casino so DCL actually then works out cheaper for me!

The Shrimp Queen is really only good when it comes to protecting her food!!!! Maybe that's because I can't fit my foot in my mouth with a shrimp tail hanging out of it!

Feeling better, thanks!!!!!

.

I prefer the battle over the "potty trained vs unpotty trained" in the Mickey Pool. Imagine fighting over your kid's right to eliminate in water that other children are splashing around in. E. coli rules, ehhhh?

OR what about that infamous "norwalk virus" cancelled cruise - lot's debates over that one?

And please let us not forget the infamous people that we have discussed like imgoingtodisney and buckaroo's dad, the former I don't miss and the latter I keep in touch with still!!!

Or what about my favorite entertainer - Fidelio and his Dueling Pianos venue?! (Working on his website and should have it up as soon as we get final approval from the Piano Guy!)

Or more recently, the issue of my "By Invitation Only" signature for the 2005 Andy and Rae 50th Birthday Celebration Cruise! As if Andy and I could possibly rent the entire ship for our party!!!!

Yes, we do have our own little debates here but for the most part, we respect eachother and can move on even after we disagree! And often we become friends....imagine that!!!!

You forgot -
Whether my little Johnny should wear a jacket and tie or a button down shirt and long pants.
Oh forget it you covered that with imgoingtodisney. Sorry.

Cheers,
Grumbo

I looked at the cruise thread on the debate board. I thought it was surprisingly civil. If you want to see real nastiness check out some of the alt.disney and rec.arts.disney boards. We are talkin' Troll city there. I actually do agree with much of the main premise of the thread. I can remember when any trip to a Disney Park was a bargain. They just are not anymore. They are premium vacations with a premium price. Except for you lucky Florida residents, a Disney Cruise is a big ticket item.

No flames! Please! (Veteran of many WDW, DL and DCL trips, and planning to do it again, once the savings account recovers.)
