im planning a dcl on points what charges are there? i know you got the 75 dollars. are there port charges or is that included with your points? do they charge you to take you to the ship from the airport or wdw? anymore charges?

There is the $75 transaction/trade fee - not sure what it is called. There are no port/taxes charges. I am not sure about the transportation charge right now - I did inquire for our 2003 cruise to have one of us take the bus to OKW (we had way too much luggage and were afraid it would not fit in our rental) and there was a $25 charge per person. Somone else might know who has cruised recently (with Magical Express - I don't know if it's limited to just resorts).

Just don't forget all the extras that you spend $$ on the ship (drinks, bingo, pictures, tips, etc.)

And, yes - you do use quiet a bit of points to cruise.

I found that it would be a lot less expensive to rent the points and purchase the cruise in cash.:confused3

I agree with all that is listed above but I believe there is also a charge for eating at Palo and soda is only free at the restaurants/eateries and the beverage station.

Remember that if you many any changes, you get a new $75 fee. And that if you have to cancel, you lose the fee and get the points back as reservation points, not full DVC points. You can only book 11 month out where most cruises can book around 18 months or so out, it varies by a few months at times.

Pluto,

I just wanted to second bicker... My family and I are cruising next September, and we found it to be more cost effective to rent out our points to help offset our cruise... Just for us, family of 2 adults and 2 kids, it was $2400 for the 7-day. For that same cruise it was about 140 points per adult, not counting kids. We only have a 210 point contract. I was able to rent 200 of our 210 points so basically our cruise will run us another $400. There are so many great people out there that want a few extra points or want a reservation to try a DVC resort that I did not have any problem renting points...

That is just my .02, but if you have a ton of points then go for it, but I would suggest checking the actual cost of the cruise if you want to take the time to rent it could work out better for you... :)

Let me know if you have any questions,
Mark

Mark, who did you book your cruise with? Those prices and points don't sound right to me for a 7 day cruise. If I could get one for $2400 for our family of 4, I'd book it now! I thought my wife was seeing prices up around $4-6K?

Beast,

Okay well a couple things about our cruise... We are taking the 7-day Eastern in September 2006, and we are only in a cat 9 room... I actually have the 04-05 vacation planner here, I was sharing it with a co-worker that may purchase, and the points listed per adult in a cat 9 is 143 points sailing in September. So for just my wife and I it would be 286 points before we even added our son or daughter. As mentioned we only have a 210 contract so this was out of the question unless we wanted to borrow a ton of points so I started calling some of the travel agents. We are actually booked through Barb at C@st@w@yclub.com (replace @=a, trying to avoid filter?) for ~$2400 for all 4 of us. So I worked for a good month and a half to rent out 200 of our points and I got really lucky and had some great renters and I was able to rent out 197 of the 200 I wanted, so I banked 13 for next UY. For us it has been a great experience and bargin so far and we can't wait to take the cruise next fall!

If I can help anymore please pm or reply to this topic and I'll get back with you.

We did 7 days for March, 04 for less than $2100 for 3 adults. But it will vary a lot with the cabin type and time of year.

The charge now for tranportation from WDW to Port Canaveral back to WDW is currently $50 per person round trip.

Thanks Mark! That link is a good find. Looks like the Sep time frame really helps with the cost. We were looking at Feb and April- it's at least 50% more then! Oh well, we'll keep saving and keep looking for a deal.

btw, we used points for our cruise last year and did have to bank and borrow to have enough. Kind of wish we tried to sell points, but we were new to dvc and a little nervous about trying that. Maybe next time.

Hi
what is the $75 chrage. is this charged on each booking as a DVC member?
I am begiining to look at the poss of buying points so interested
thanks
ruth :sunny:

The $75 is for the transfer of Points to DCL... It is kind of like a surcharge DCL charges DVC for booking on points. There is no fee to make reservations at any of the Disneyworld hotels.
