Mickey Mouse vs. Moe the Rat
By AP
PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Moe the Rat is butting heads with Mickey Mouse. The International Longshoremen's Association sued the Disney Cruise Line and Canaveral Port Authority in federal court March 21 after Disney banned the image of Moe the Rat during protests at the cruise terminal.
Disney objects to the rat's image, saying it makes a mockery of Mickey. When Disney's ships Magic and Wonder arrived in port, picketers usually greet passengers with a five-metre high statue of Moe and leaflets with his image. The longshoremen's association has been protesting Disney's hiring of a contractor that has not reached a collective bargaining agreement with its cruise ship employees.
"We have the right to prohibit this type of activity," said Angela Bliss, spokesman for Disney Cruise Line. "It's unfortunate the union has decided to increase the attacks against us in an effort to gain leverage in its negotiations."
But the union argues that sometimes a rat is just a rat -- and Moe has nothing to do with Mickey.
