DCL Europe Summer 2022 approaching - what are you doing?

We’re on the 7/30 mystery cruise out of Dover. Our plan is to stay in Dover the night before. This is because we’ve cruised out of Dover before but not explored the castle or cliffs and I wanted to do that. It is easy to take the train from London. I searched earlier today and there are Covid test sites at Gatwick and Heathrow - all subject to change of course. Here’s to finding out where we’re going!
Lol @Mystery cruise 🤣🤣🤣🤣

And now the research begins! See you in Dover!

We went to the same port in Germany years ago on the first Northern European Caps tour. Current teen was very little so we stayed in town. It was very nice for a quiet seaside exploring day. This time we'll be going to Berlin since we haven't been there.

Our itinerary changed too, I have some homework to do…no more mystery cruise. I need Scooby Doo and the gang to help me out!

Wednesday August 10, 2022 7-Night Northern Europe Cruise from Copenhagen originally had the Magic in St. Petersburg on August 13th. Additional ports of Tallinn, Helsinki, and Stockholm have bee replaced. New ports include Oslo, Gothenburg, Alesund, and Frederica.
Wednesday: Copenhagen, Denmark
Thursday: Oslo, Norway
Friday: Gothenburg, Sweden
Saturday: Day at Sea
Sunday: Alesund, Norway
Monday: Day at Sea
Tuesday: Fredericia, Denmark
Wednesday: Copenhagen, Denmark

Wow, quite different. I assume the original itinerary had Sweden, Finland, and Estonia as well as Russia? I can see why it took so long to adjust the itinerary since they didn't just plug in a couple other Baltic sea ports.
Yes, quite a bit different.

That's a pretty nice itinerary now. I would sail it.

Yes, my work day is shot now as all I want to do is research the new places!

Why in the world would they drop Stockholm and Helsinki?

At a guess? Proximity, at least for Helsinki. It is very close to Russia. And if you're not going to Helsinki or Tallinn, Stockholm is rather out-of-the-way and probably just doesn't fit well with the rest of the itinerary.

It looks like they've just decided to avoid the Baltic Sea entirely, except for a couple of ports at the very far end (Copenhagen and Warnemunde).

They shifted to ports that are more North Sea than Baltic. It's 400+ miles from Copenhagen to Stockholm and Stockholm is also quite a transit "inland" which adds many hours to the trip. Also, when they depart Copenhagen for Baltic ports, they don't just sail south into the Baltic. They go all the way up and around the Zealand Island which adds a LOT of time to the cruise. From an operations/mariner perspective, by picking ports in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, it's much more efficient - and much less of a headache for the Captain.

Other cruiselines kept those ports and added others. I would think if you wanted a Norway cruise you would have just booked one.

People can always take their money elsewhere. We did this trip in 2018 and without St Petersburg, I would not have been super excited for Stockholm and Helsinki as the "big" ports on the trip. They were nice, but... To each their own.

Arguably, other cruise lines are taking a bigger risk with that decision. Probably still a very small risk in absolute terms, but if the situation in the Baltics were to destabilize over the next few months, I could see the sense in avoiding the entire area. Sharing space with warships is probably not most vacationers' idea of a good time.

Admittedly, if it gets to that point, all European travel will be risky. But there is probably some space in between.

We're on the 7 day Northern European out of Copenhagen. It's an entirely different cruise now. I do like all of the new ports, but I'm a little disappointed by the 2 days at sea. This cruise is so expensive, I'm not sure how I feel about 2 full days at sea.

Maybe because Sweden and Finland want to join NATO now which will enrage Putin even more.
The cruise is still going to Sweden. You really think your safe anywhere if a nuclear war starts. It’s kind of a mute point.

I think there’s better ports beside Norway.
