DCL carry-on alcohol policy changing Sept. 30 2015

How do you know this was caused by people carrying their alcohol on and not just getting drunk at the bars (or in port)?
Late at night ie 2 am and their own bottles and cans and bags. The bars in the adult area had all closed for the night. All bars on deck closed. They may have been drinking earlier at a bar, but this was plain to see as an abuse of bring your own on. I really think the strength of UK beer And Russian vodka purchased in St Petersburg etc played a part, as they were not use to the strength.

Booze packages do not work they encourage over drinking to get your money's worth. They would have to do it for all audits in a cabin as on other lines one adult gets it and then passes the drinks to others.

How is it any different for the mindset of people who eat as much food as they can on the cruise to get their money's worth? Are we going to start cutting people off at 2 Mickey Bars per day?

Some of the responses to this policy change are proof that Disney fans are their own special breed.

Why defend a policy change that takes away from the experience? Even if you didn't partake of that particular experience? You can defend Disney all you want, but in the end this makes Disney less appealing then before, not more.
It's business not blind fandom. Disney is counting on retaining the customers who don't feel that this policy added to their experience in any meaningful way. Why continue losing money on something that isn't considered valuable enough by your customers? With the assumption that they will retain many/most customers, they hope to earn additional money. If a person drinks 2 drinks per day and used to bring their own rum, they would save $20 per day. Now, they purchase those drinks from Disney and the line earns and additional $20/day (because let's face it, drinks are almost all profit.) If even 1000 people per cruise are spending $20/day, that is an additional $20,000 per day. Will it have an impact on the individual cruiser who only drinks 1-2 drinks a day, not really. But for DCL, it can make a big difference. Perhaps those people even choose to buy drinks rather than an additional photo at Shutters which doesn't change the customer's overall expenditure but does change the company's bottom line (higher profit margin on drinks.)

There is also the reality that some will feel that BYOB is crucial to their cruise experience, and DCL will lose them as customers. My guess is that they have done sufficient research to suggest that they have enough buy in from the customers who want "family friendly" to drop this perk and have minimal attrition.

This is a really big disappointment. We will be taking DCL cruise 17 in November and the perk of being able to bring on wine and liquor has been important in justifying the higher costs of a DCL cruise. We are not drunken cruisers (and rarely have I seen any on our DCL cruises) but we enjoy having cocktails in our room and on our veranda. We still spend plenty in the lounges and dining rooms. My husband and I cruise DCL with and without our daughter because of the quality and what we considered value due to the on-board alcohol policy. This will definitely make us at least consider sailing other lines in the future (we have never sailed any other line besides DCL).

We are in this same boat with you! Gonna be very hard for me to justify paying a premium when I can't at least save money on my bar tab. :( Just hope they at least evaluate the types as I don't mind limiting to 1 bottle (we never carry more than that anyway) but I have traveled with people whom don't drink wine or beer and would bring like a 6pack of airplane bottles with them.

There are stop-gaps in the system - at least on RCCL. You cannot get more than one drink at a time, and from what I saw on my Radiance cruise to Alaska, there is a time limit on how often the card can be swiped. So while it can be done, someone is sitting with a drink for around 10 minutes before they can "buy" it for the other person.

I know they can change it anytime they want but it is a little unfair to move the goalposts when someone has PIF'd! We are on the 14 night Panama Canal cruise in October. I have never bought alcohol on for shorter cruises and it is unlikely I will on the next one but I was very much hoping to take advantage of it on the 14 night! We only have 4 port days (and they didnt dock in Puerto Vallarta in May due to civil unrest so could be less) and I have full intention of buying drinks at the bars too not to mention all the tastings we are booked on!

I agree. Disney can change their policies without notice and it's all int he T&Cs but that doesn't make it right. I definitely think it's crappy to treat your "guests" that way. I know exactly what you're talking about with the 14 nighter. I was on the May WBPC that skipped PV. We didn't run low on liquor, though. :D

Actually, both Royal and NCL all adults in a stateroom are not required to carry the same beverage package. I know Royal changed to this in November 2013 and are still doing it. Must mean they're still making enough $$ on it.

So in order to be more in line with Carnival for example, will they start charging for soda too? Don't be surprised if that's next!

They used to charge for soda - i have a mug I still take on cruises from the days they sold it when you got on to use for sodas.

Did this nugget get dropped at D23 yesterday??? Hmmmmm........ At least it would've been actual news. LOL!

It would have been actual news, but no, this was not announced during the DCL session at D23. All the "news" from D23 was previously announced stuff.

Nice irony with the 'new ships and islands!' tease, heh.

Editing to add: Disappointed to see people doing the "so (X) was the only reason you cruised? you'd really cancel a cruise over (Y)?" thing. Everyone has their breaking point, and everyone has different priorities and reasons for cruising.

Boy some of you must drink a lot if the DCL carry-on policy was how you justified the higher cost of the cruise.
I wouldn't say it's *just* what justifies the higher cost. It is a factor. If you're looking for things that sets DCL apart from other cruise lines, this list is shrinking while the difference in prices are not. So what exactly are you paying more for with Disney? The chance to meet Mickey?

It's true by the size of some peoples plates or ordering three lobster tails they have the same view to get my money's worth Also some steal disks and shampoos, the difference is it affects them their health bring drunk affects others us disruptive and may lead to criminal damage.

For me the overall environment and the entertainment. Yes I enjoyed the overall cruise I took on RCCL and yes I am cruising with them again, but the little Disney touches aren't there. And the entertainment - you may be "bored" with Disney's shows, but I can pretty much guarantee that if you had sat through RCCL's "City of Dreams" (a friend who left after the third song bought me a drink as "hazard pay" for sitting through the whole mess) you would be THRILLED to see DCL's entertainment again!

I understand the business model. I don't understand why other cruisers not directly affiliated with Disney actively defend them when they are taking away something popular from fellow cruisers. The "it doesn't impact me, so I don't care" mindset is a slippery slope. Like you said, they'll take away anything they think they can get away with. If no one ever criticizes them for bad decisions (even if you're not directly impacted) they'll just take and take until their just like every other cruise line out there. I would be critical of them for removing free soda and ice cream even though I don't use either of those perks.
