All the major rental companies are at DAB so compare rental car rates there to MCO. If they are the same or less than at Orlando AND the fare (including all taxes) is also cheaper, then Daytona is a viable option. It's not much farther than Sanford and we have plenty of people flying there. Yes, it's farther than MCO but if you're buying multiple tickets the savings can multiply out. The Daytona airport is on US 92 just east of the junction of I-95, very close to the junction with I-4. So the drive is very simple. Edd is correct about I-4 congestion so you either need to avoid it in the Orlando area during rush hour or use the TOLL 417 bypass around Orlando.
Bottom line: Daytona, Melbourne and Tampa are all viable alternatives if the fare savings justify it and if you're planning to rent a car anyway.
