Day trip to the beach with kids

We're thinking of heading to the beach for a day while we're down there in May. Any advice on Cocoa Beach area versus Melbourne area (or a different one)? We have a 1-1/2 and 4 year old. Which beach is closest? We're staying off-site about mile west on 192 from World Drive

We were thinking about doing this too - but not for a day trip, we thought maybe 2 or 3 days. I was hoping to find somewhere on the Gulf coast side instead of the Atlantic coast. I've heard that the beaches and water are much different than the Atlantic coast and considering we live about 45 minutes from the Jersey Shore, I was hoping to give the girls a different experience. I know that Vero Beach is supposed to be a nice beach, but I have never personally been there. It's about 2 hours from WDW.
