This probably belongs on the cruise board but it was a short cruise and for those who have been following our saga I didn't want to make it any harder than it was to find it. If the moderators want to move it, then feel free!
Cast of Adventurers
Me: Shelly Disney Nut and wanting to go back to WDW for 12 plus years.
DH: Warren Converted Disney Nut
DS: Brandon, Age 7 Being raised right (a Disney Nut)
The alarm went off (oh right scratch that; I developed a kernel of sense). I have no clue what time we awoke and we didn't care. I can still assure you it was probably earlier than most people just because all three of us are morning people. We wandered down to Parrot Cay for breakfast as we wanted to see the restaurant since we missed it the night before.
We sat with a family that I'm sure was very nice. They were also VERY quiet. Their son who seemed to be about age four was abnormally well behaved. You know the kind of kid that makes yours look like some kind of hooligan. Actually, Brandon was well behaved he is just about the messiest eater on the planet. We try and try to improve it but let's just say he wears his food well. In fact I know everyday what he has for lunch just by looking at his shirt. I hope he outgrows it by the time he leaves for his honeymoon.
The buffet was very nice. Now take our food opinions for what they are worth. We are not food snobs. In fact my husband rules quantity as a more important option than quality. I try to cut him some slack since he did grow up in a family of six brothers and the fight for food was fierce. I thought the buffet was beautifully presented and the decor of Parrot Cay very charming. I found a new love. I found out I adore bagels with lox and cream cheese. I also learned to keep a sharp lookout for the cream cheese danish. Oh, I'm hungry just typing. It was also fun because we had a window seat and could look out the window watching the ship dock.
We decided to spend the morning just wandering the ship. We took Brandon to the kids club as he was just itching to go back. Then about 10:30 we presented ourselves at the spa for our surial bath. What a kick. The mud felt cold and slimy at first but after a few minutes of the steam we were toasty warm. The only thing I wished we would have had was a waterproof watch so we would have known for sure when the attendant was coming back in. She also warned to only push the emergency button in a real emergency because she would come in guns blazing so to speak and wouldn't knock first. She was great and didn't try to push any of the products on us. We oozed our bodies back to the cabin for a short nap. I felt completely relaxed for the first time in days.
Our plan was to pick Brandon up at the club and grab some lunch. Brandon begged to eat lunch with the kids club and so we let him. The weather was so nice it seemed like a crime to eat indoors so we grabbed some trays and ate at Beach Blanket Buffet. Warren again did it justice. We looked across at one of the Premier ships and it looked tiny!
We dragged Brandon out of the club and headed to Nassau. We got approached by a taxi driver who said he would take us around. We agreed and then he told us to go wait while he finished filling up the cab. It was really warm and we were getting bored. After waiting for about 15 minutes we told him that we were tired of waiting and were going to leave. I honestly thought he would just take us then since it was afternoon and the odds that he was going to pick up any fare at all was pretty slim. He didn't though he just let us walk away. I was surprised that no one tried to get me to braid my hair since it is very thick and long. We wandered past the horse drawn carts and all of them take a break at the same time of day every day. We were told to come back later.
We decided to tour the pirate museum. It was very expensive for what you got but the amount of poverty I saw made me very willing to spend money. I also ended up getting several years growth scared out of me as I thought they were all wax figures and one of them greeted us. I would have liked to linger but Brandon wasn't overly interested and Warren isn't much of a history buff either.
We checked out a couple of jewelry stores for some dream purchases. Maybe someday we'll have the money to drop on emeralds but for now we have to be satisfied to just spend time looking. We then headed over to the straw market. We found the nicest lady named Teresa who sold us straw bags and t-shirts. We asked about the crowds and she mentioned that this was the slow season. Then she said some things that I will never forget. She said that although there were lean times she had much to be thankful for because God sustained her. It was said with such sweetness and sincerity that it brought tears to our eyes. She mentioned that her brother-in-law Thomas was one of the cart drivers and to tell him that Theresa had sent us.
We went back to where the cart drivers were lined up. Because Theresa had touched us we decided that we wanted to help support her family. We started asking for Thomas. The first guy we came to said that no he could give us a better deal. We explained that we had promised Theresa that we would ask for Thomas but that if we couldn't find him then we would come back and use him. We got about 5 drivers down and another driver approached us. We explained that we were looking for Thomas and that guy said, "I'm Thomas." So we started walking with him. We were a few feet away from his carriage when the first guy came running up and said, "That's not Thomas." Then those two started arguing and we thought we were going to have to break up a fight when the real Thomas came driving up. The irony is that I think Thomas would have liked a few minutes of break and didn't seem very enthused about giving us a ride.
However, we climbed aboard. These carriages are a lot of fun. The horse's name was Jack and he wore a cute straw hat with flowers. For about $10 for each adult they'll take you on a short ride around the city. A running commentary was also supposed to be included but Thomas wasn't too much of a talker. It was pleasant but again I was struck with how poor many of the people appeared. On the plus side all of the children get a good education and they are very strict with school uniforms and attendance.
By this time I was exhausted. Brandon was anxious to get back in the club and I settled down for a nap. Brandon did not want to join us for dinner but mean mother that I am I made him. I also wanted to get a family portrait. We dressed for dinner at Tritons and lined up for the picture. Then we headed into the restaurant to meet our table mates. They were a husband and wife, her sister and the couple's two kids. Brandon was about two years older than their oldest girl and he was better behaved. Ahhh good! My nightmare of dining with the stepford children was not coming true. They were pleasant companions but not anyone that we felt we needed to keep up with once we left the ship. We also met our servers Roberto and Quincy. For the most part I took Roberto's suggestions and I was not sorry. The sea bass was to die for. I also tried escargot for the first time. I figured if I hated it I could get something else and what the heck, it was all included. I don't think I'll ever order them again, but I'm glad I can say that I've tried snails. Now I can threaten the little monsters that live in my garden.
Brandon was chomping at the bit to get back to the club and so the adults were off to the theater. The show that evening was Hercules. It was my favorite of the three. OK I know I didn't see Ghost Ship but I still know Herc was my favorite. The actor that played Hades had such timing and the Moose, er Muse er Ugliest Broad I've ever seen was hysterical. I thought to myself as we walked back to the cabin that this was such a civilized way to travel. Here we were dining and seeing a great presentation and the walk to bed was only 5 minutes away. We had the added bonus of not having to pay the sitter. And all the time we were traveling to a tropical beach.
Honey I hate to break it to you but set the alarm cause tomorrow is Castaway Cay. It will be worth it, I promise.
