Friday 9/26
This was supposed to be Animal Kingdom day but we ditched it due to lack of enthusiasm and energy. I keep calling Animal Kingdom Animal Planet after the cable TV network. Does anybody else have this problem or am I just totally senile? We decided that it would be best to do MK one last time for the whole day so DS could get his fill and re-ride all his favorites (Pooh, Small world, Country Bears).
We hadnt hit Buzz yet so we did that first. I had trouble aiming my gun and it was hard to see the laser dot on the targets so I only scored 160,000 points in spite of memorizing Zurgs cheat, ahem, I mean help site. As a side note, I looked diligently for bad shoes all through out my travels but I didnt see any and I was very disappointed! I saw some funky sport sneakers hanging out the bottom of the stall next to me on my favorite ride (The Ladies Room) but I didnt think it would be a good idea to indulge in flash photography at that moment .. Can you imagine having to explain That one? Honest officer Im doing this on orders from ZURG!
We crossed over to Fantasy land and did the ones we wanted to do again. I had had my eye on Mickeys Philharmagic all morning and was waiting for it to open. I asked at the gift shop and the CM said that she had heard that they were trying for an 11:00 am start but not to hold her to that information because you can never be sure since it was in test run mode prior to its official opening.
At 11:00 am I noticed some CMs standing in front of the trash cans that were blocking the entrance. They informed me that they were having trouble with the show but were still trying to fix it and have it open by early afternoon. As it turns out I spent the whole day criss-crossing the park and checking back to see what the status was. Finally when I was ready to leave at 4:00 pm I made one final check and I was told that the attraction would probably be down for awhile. It seems that were having trouble synchronizing everything together even though it had all been synchronized and running earlier in the week. BTW the Philharmagic print and pin that they give you with the fairytale package is beautifully framed and gorgeous to look at.
After Fantasy land we ventured over to Toontown where we only had the energy to do Mickeys House. I have always said that Mickey is the most elusive major character in the Disney World parks. Of course its because hes busy running the whole shebang and that Michael Eisner guy probably takes up a lot of his time with endless details.
On the whole I thought his house was rather modest in light of all the dough he rakes in. The kitchen was a mess but then what do you expect from a bachelor. I can really see him settling down one day with that Minnie Mouse hes always hanging around with. She would do him a world of good.
DH and DS just didnt have any more energy after that so they decided to leave But I dragged them over to Tomorrow land to have one of those 3D crystal images made of DSs head. DS could not stop fidgeting and the machine was giving us conniptions so we had to re-take the picture many times. I finally bribed DS with the Lollipop of his choice if he would just cooperate as best as he could. He held true to the deal and was thus eligible to pick a lolli that was large enough to be used at the Whispering Canyon Café. We could have paddled a canoe home to Jersey with the size of this thing. Luckily he seems to have forgotten about it and it is now in the witness protection program in Marlton NJ.
I dashed off to Space Mountain for a trip down memory lane. The old gray mare just aint what she used to be after the debut of Mission space. Then again Mission Space doesnt make you feel like youre going to get your head chopped off like Space Mountain does. S M is one ride where you really do have to keep your appendages inside the car otherwise youll be lighter when you leave.
We had dinner at Artists Point on our final night. Again the food was just ok but the service was fancy and very attentive. I found that over all, the service provided in the hotels, restaurants and parks was very attentive with the exception of dinner at Cinderellas Royal table. Our server there was aloof and rushed and this led to communication problems with the kitchen.
Our best meals as far as being tastiest were at The Rose and Crown in the United Kingdom and the Biergarten in Germany. Those salads and krauts in Germany were so tasty it inspired me to get out my authentic German cook book and whip some up at home.
Our housekeeper at the WL was wonderful. We made sure to tip her every day and we left her a note when we checked out saying how much we appreciated all her hard work and creativity with the towel animals. She even noticed that we were swiping extra towels from the pool for multiple showers and she started leaving them with out having to be asked.
DH was blown away by the meal costs so the next time we do this we plan on staying off site and renting a car. The transportation provided by Mears was not enough of an advantage to justify being trapped on site and having to rely on WDW restaurants and their extremely high prices. We plan on getting most of our meals on the road in Orlando going to and from the parks.
Many of the guide books tell you to save the Magic Kingdom for last if you have small children. Due to the park hours we decided it was best to do MK on our first day. I have to say that this was so much better because DS really got the idea about what Disney is about, simply because we did the MK on his first day in the parks and he could see it from that perspective. From then on no matter where we were he could detect the common theme at any hotel, park or restaurant that we were in. This really kept up his interest and involved him in the experience.
Thank you to all of you who have posted your trip reports and other helpful information on this board. It really fills a need .. a need to know, a need to be entertained and a need to reminisce about what it was like and what it will be again one day.
Sincerely, Marlton Mom
PS. I forgot to tell you what eventually happened to the pygmies living under the bed in the WL. It seems they made the mistake of going on Its a Small World. The Imagineers thought they were cast members and put them to work. Look for them the next time you float by and maybe youll see one or two.
