Date: Spring Break (March 17 - 24)

We knew that we had to leave the day after tomorrow, so we carefully weighed our options and decided to head back to Animal Kingdom (the hope being that Primeval Whirl would be soft opening). As we arrived, we decided to pass on the early morning Safari ride (when the animals tend to be the best) and head straight for Dinosaur (my favorite ride). As we arrived, DW confessed to me that the Dinosaur that leaps out at the end kind of "freaks her out" - which invited a barrage of teasing from me. And, of course, with that knowledge safe in hand we decided to ride Dinosaur not once, but twice :p

Afterwards we took the long exit from Dinosaur (after buying some DinoTrinkets from the DinoGiftShop) and came out near Primeval Whirl, where we heard the most wonderful noise - laughter and screams of joy. They had just opened (first day of soft opening) the ride when the park opened, so there were very few people in line. We darted over to get in line and counted ourselves extremely lucky. It was a fun ride - not nearly as "spinful" as we thought it would be - which is good, because I tend to get naseous when spun out of control. It was faster than we thought it would be too, and a bit bumpy, but VERY fun and perfectly themed for that part of the park. We departed with cameras in hand (hoping to get these photos onto the DisBoards back in March when they would have been "breaking news") and took several shots.

Then, because the carnival area was still very empty, we played against each other to win a stuffed animal (only cost $4 for a nice plush toy). We decided then to head over to Safari - for a late morning ride, to see how the animals looked then (we had only ridden early morning before that). While we were in line, I had one of the more memorable experiences of the trip. This was our first trip post 9/11, and as such, I had a bit of anxiety when we were flying, etc. This is mainly because I worry about everything, but it was in our mind as we went through the freshly installed security gates, noticed that EE was gone, etc.. While we were in the very long line for Safari (it was even delayed a bit more than usual because Wildabeasts were on the track for some time), there was a man next to me wearing an FDNY shirt. Now, I didn't think much about it because lots of people wear them nowadays, but I noticed that when another person wearing an FDNY shirt passed by that his wife leaned over to him and said "There's another one" and he replied "That's why I'm wearing mine". So I figured, here's one of the guys who's been on the "front lines" for the last 6 months - ourselves being in Nebraska, we are fairly detached from the situation (not in spirit or heart, just geographically) except when the President decided to land at the airbase in Omaha on that fateful September day. So, to make an increasingly long story short, I tried to be the least invasive that I could (he obviously was with his family and trying to enjoy his vacation) and I said in a quiet voice to him "Are you with the New York Fire Department?" - He said "No, but I'm a NY city cop". I said "Close enough, thank you for everything". We shook hands - talked a bit in serious introspective tones and then we parted ways when we got to the front of the line. Was wonderful to thank someone who has seen/done so much for us and also wonderful to see that Disney brings joy to everyone when they need it :) With such serious thoughts on my mind, it was nice to save 'Lil Red again (man that guy gets in trouble all the time - we just saved him a few days before!) and see the simplicity that wildlife can enjoy.

After finishing up on Safari, DW wanted to visit POR (since that was the resort she stayed in when she was in high school) so that we could think about staying there next time. We had a wonderful time and immediately realized that POR was a much newer resort that CBR. CBR will always have a special place in our hearts (and has a unique theme that we LOVE), but I we're going to try POR this fall to see if we like staying there as much as we liked eating there that afternoon!

Because it was Saturday - it meant that Spectromagic and the MK fireworks show was that night, so we got our stuff together and headed out, trying to find a good place on Main Street to camp out. Unfortunatley, again because it was Saturday AND Spring Break, MK was getting incredibly busy. I'd never seen so many people in one place. So we stayed for awhile, but when it because clear that it was going to be more hassle than it was worth, we decided to head back and spend our last evening relaxing and enjoying Disney in true "vacation style" - i.e. ice cream and fireworks from CBR. Besides, we'll be back dozens more times and have a chance to see everything all over again!

Ahhh Disney...

Last Day Soon...

I too loved Port Orleans and also Dixie Landings...they are a nice combo together....I am anxious to try the little coaster at AK too....every one else did it in April....so my husband and I will have to do it in a few weeks..thanks again for your report

Sounds like a nice day! Looking forward to trying Primeval Whirl soon...

Thanks for the report on PES!

Again, a nice report & pics!

Well, I'm all teary now. Reading about your encounter with the NYC cop just made me get all puddled up. How wonderful to have a chance to thank one of our American Heroes in person.

Thanks for the great photos.
