let me state that the level of trip reports I have read on the DIS have really made me raise the bar in my own writing. I am hoping people will enjoy this as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

So this is what 4 a.m. looks like. Hmm…..Yep I could go a whole lifetime without seeing that again. My super wonderful fabulous brother-in-law Jeff picked us up about 4:30 from out house. The only requirement was that I had a cold mountain dew ready for him – task done. He drives us about 25 minutes to the airport – Thanks Jeff Love ya, Mean it!

Get in line for Delta to get our boarding passes and check our luggage. All taken care of and then we are off to the gate where we sit for about an hour and a half. I am not one to take chances with airlines – I get there early. Dh plays tetris and I read a book. (This is so riveting isn’t it?) We board the plane and land in Atlanta and hour and a half later. The Atlanta Airport is BIG, but I manage to find our next gate – wait about 45 minutes and then board to go to Orlando. DH and I sleep for most of the flight (hey it is about 12p.m. now – we’ve been up for awhile). We wake up for final desent (am I the only one that feels like this is forboading sounding?) and I look out my window and what do I see ----- but the Contemporary resort. Now wait that can’t be – well wait that building looks an awful lot like the Grand Floridian…..and….. yep ya can’t deny Spaceship Earth! WE ARE HERE! I run off the plane, trampling people in my wake as I scream at the top of my lungs “GET OUT OF MY WAY!” (this really didn’t happen but makes the story more interesting right?) We load onto our first Monorail ride through the airport – yep there are palm trees…but wait a minute I’m still cold and I have on my winter coat. Yep folks I leave behind temperatures of about 18 degrees in St. Louis only to find 35 degree weather in Orlando. Talk about feeling Jipped! We go to baggage claim and find our Happy Limo Driver waiting for us rather Happily --- hehehe get it? And we wait and wait and wait and wait for our luggage. Just as I am about to get nervous it makes an appearance and we are off. We are heading to the Animal Kingdom Lodge it is now about 2p.m. and we’ve been up since 4a.m. so you can imagine how tired we are.

You walk in the lobby of the Animal Kingodm Lodge and your mouth just falls open. WHOA! Dh stops me from walking into people since I can’t seem to take my eyes off the ceiling. We make our way to check in – Eureka! Our room is ready – standard view on the 4th floor. We head up. Now – a few words about standard view rooms at the AKL – you can get a view of trees, roofs, or the bus stops. Our room walked right out over the lobby which at first I thought would be loud but we never really had a problem with it. Our view is what I would call a “partial pool view” as you could see the edge of the pool and tree tops just over the roof of the resturant Boma. The smells though in that room because of Boma are incredible! And you find yourself always hungry. Our room was a short walk from a round outside stairwell that walked you down one floor to a very large public viewing terrace that no one hardly used. It looked over the main Savannah. I sat out there every morning with my book and hot chocolate watching the animals and was never disturbed (except for one morning and that will come later). I saw animals every day of my trip. Our room was close to Mara, the pool, and the Arusha Rock – room 4403 – I never felt like I was missing out on anything having a standard view room.

Okay on with the show! We throw our bags in the room and start to unpack. We run down to Mara to purchase lunch (we were starving) 2 children chicken finger meals with fries and our refillable mugs came to about $35.00. Went back to the room now it is about 3:30…we are meeting up with Doreen and Todd (are own DoeWDW) at 5:30 at Casey’s to watch Spectro and Wishes so a short nap won’t hurt…………. To be continued!

I was not impressed with going straight up in the air on that escalator......how about it being called a Disney ride........thanks so much for your start of your vacation

I just realized as I read the end of your first day.. that I was also supposed to meet you all at Casey's... until my dates changed to a week prior... OOooooo can't wait to read the next installment to see what I WOULD have been doing had I not gone the week before!! LOL!!! Hope you all had a great time!!

Kathy

We were there from the 4th to the 8th at AKL! Wasn't Saturday night cold? And what about Sunday morning  ! We were sitting in the lobby waiting for our ride from 7:50am - 8:30am and saw all the people heading out in coats, mittens and hats! Too funny... and we were heading back to 20's! :( But I can't complain too much, we had 80's on Thursday and Friday! :sunny:

Can't wait to see what happened at AKL after I left. Hope they treated you well!

K
