We are considering buying DVC points and ran across David's Vacation Club Rentals. Have any of you used this site? Is it reputable? Are there any "gotcha's" we need to know about when buying DVC points?

I never used DVC but the last time I rented ANYTHING I wound up very very ITCHY! Always use common sense when dealing with rentals and alwyas get refferals.

The only "gotcha" with renting points is that you don't get daily room service. David's is one of the most reputable sites there is. I haven't personally used his service, but I know many people who have and who have been happy. The other thing is that of course, you can't cancel a point reservation like you can a cash reservation, so trip insurance is essential.

Ok... now I'm confused after re-reading your original post. Are you looking at actually BUYING into DVC (as in a 40-50 year deeded interest) or are you just looking to get points for this one vacation.

I think David's is very reputable but have found that I get a better deal when I rent from individuals. I have been renting for 10 years and have never had a single problem but I suppose there is more risk when renting from individuals. There would be no risk when renting from David except that you could not cancel a reservation at the last minute.

Depends on the "gotcha" ~ DH has never been happier not having someone come in the room everyday. I personally like the cleaning... but he doesn't.

IF it means that much to you ~ you can pay for daily cleaning.

David is just an agent for a DVC member, he collects the money and takes care of the contract. The member makes the actual reservation. From what I understand, he gives the member half of the money upfront and holds the rest until after the trip. So you have some protection there.

You really are not buying or renting points, you are renting a member's reservation The member is still in control of it.

Are you considering renting points, or buying points? Does David's sell points, or just rent them?

Here right now renting points thru David. Smooth all the way! Will be using his service again in the future!

Thanks for the replies folks and my apologies for putting this in the wrong forum.
I guess we are looking at renting points.

The major gotcha is that you have no control over your reservation. David's is a pretty reputable place to deal with, and I believe that both parties need to sign a contract, but you still have no control. You want to add DME, you need to let the owner know and they do it. Want to request a certain room location, let the owner know. If there is a problem with the reservation, the owner needs to call to take care of it. Now odds are there will be no problems, especially if you are just doing a room only reservation, but it is something to keep in mind.

i rented points from a family friend once and know that the DVC owner must make all reservations and take care of all arrangements - that is a hassle and you must TRUST the person you're renting from -

the upside of renting from an individual is that it is probably cheaper that David - the upside of David is that he affords you a bit of extra "protection" and peace of mind through his contract but you pay for it with a little higher price.

if i didn't have a personal relationship with whom I was renting from, i would really want to look over the contract and have very clear communication about what I wanted the owner to book - i would probably want to see some reviews or check a couple references. I would have to become pretty comfortable with it and i think trip insurance is something to consider b/c you can't cancel like you can with resort reservations. if i couldn't get comfortable with this or didn't have the time to really get my mind around the details of the rental agreement, i would spend the extra money with david.

i wouldn't worry about daily maid service much - we sacrified that for a nicer room - we just hung up towels.

Consider a DVC rental (actually you purchase a reservation a member makes with their points) a done deal. Meaning if something comes up, you probably won't be able to cancel or change the reservation. And there are usually no refunds because of the restrictions on points.

If you stay seven nights or less, on day four (day one is check in), you get your towels replaced and trash removed. If you stay eight nights or more, you get a full cleaning on day four and trash and towel service on day eight.

You get one bath towel and one face cloth per sleeping space. So if you get a studio, you get four of each. If you book a one bedroom, you probably only get four of each, but may get five if you book one of the one bedroom villas that sleep five. Two bedroom eight or nine. And you can't just ask housekeeping for extra towels. You'll need to purchase an extra towel pack if you want more. Same with extra shampoo, shower gel, soap, etc.

You won't get any of the member perks like pool hopping (if it isn't blacked out for the time period) or DVC discounts. But you get a very nice villa instead of just a room. The larger villas (one, two and three bedroom) have a washer and dryer in the room. Studios have access to a laundry room somewhere on the property.

You won't get any pixie dust sprinkled on you and get something bigger than you booked unless your villa is out of service for maintenance and they don't have another in the same size. That happens rarely.

You can't add Magical Express or the dining plan yourself. The member has to do that. You have no access to the reservation until the moment you check in. You can't add a request.

We have rented points from Davi'd DVC several times. Always a smooth transaction and it's easy to add on ME and Dining Plans through him. I like the security of a 3rd party, so I'd rather pay a bit more and reserve through David, than rent from a private party.

Seriously??? This is no different than any DVC owner staying at a DVC resort on their points. It is no different than booking a stay at any WDW resort. You obviously don't understand how the concept works. So....
A DVC owner will decide they aren't going to be able to use all their points in a specific time period. So, they hand them over to David. David then acts as a middleman. Those who want to rent points for a DVC stay, but who don't own DVC themselves, can contact David and let him know what they are looking for. He will then set up the reservation for them.

So, in short, no you have no control over your reservation. Once you get to the resort, the reservation is yours. It is really no different than booking a regular resort stay through a TA. The vast majority of those who do their WDW vacations this way have been very happy.

The vacationer gets a nice vacation at a really nice WDW resort for much less than if they booked through Disney, the DVC owner has peace of mind that they aren't going to lose money on the deal or get stiffed, and David makes a small amount for handling the transaction.

If I were to decide to rent my points, I would give them over to David to take care of in a hearbeat. He has a great reputation.
