I haven't scheduled the visit to the orthodontist yet but my child's dentist recommended that we get braces to correct my 8 year old daughters overbite. Any clue how much braces will cost?

We are in Canada, but my daughter's 2 year treatment plan, with clarity (clear) braces were $6000.00.

I 'just' found out that many regular GP dentists will do them for half that! So try getting some quotes from a regular GP that does orthodontics. I wish I had known this. We went to a fancy kids orthodontist with the fancy little chairs and tvs,etc... and got taken. I thought you had to use a place like this....turns out you dont!

My 15 year old sister has braces now, but her problem is her palate is too narrow or something and she has an overbite. Hers are $4400 and my parents insurance covers most or all of it. I'm not sure if it's covered under dental or health insurance. My mom has braces now and the insurance doesn't cover hers because she is an adult. Hers are almost 6k, but she has those braces that are clear plastic forms that snap over your teeth. Every 2-3 weeks they give her new molds.

If you don't have insurance to cover it, look into a FSA. I think you can take out money before taxes for it.

My 10 yo DD just got them on in November.
$5300.00 all out of pocket!

My 12 year old boys were done in 2 phases @ a total of $5000.00.
good luck.

My sons cost 4400. Personally I would see what the difference is between getting them now and when she's older - like 11-14. Sometimes when you get them so young you need to get them again. I assume that costs more but I don't know for sure but who would want to wear braces twice if it's not necessary.

Most orthodontists will give your child a free evaluation to see if they are ready. Most won't start until most permanent teeth are in unless there are other issues. Take her to be evaluated, but I'd hold off until she a few years older unless she has trouble chewing or the orthod says you must start now.

We were quoted $5600 for my son. If we payed in cash up front, they'd give us a 5% discount. :lmao:

ITA, my DD's in her 5th year of braces! She start our when she was almost 9, everything went great, but then when she got her braces off the first time, her bottom molers came in sideways and whacked her teeth out of allignment. She was put in braces again after having two teeth pulled.

I think mine where 5,500. Hopefully I will only have them on for 12-14 months!
I am already 8 months in so not much longer.

My niece is doing phase 1, she is 9. She has a crossbite and a narrow jaw. For this phase it's $3700. Orthodontist said she will probably need phase 2 about a year after phase 1 is complete (phase 1 is scheduled to last 12-18 mos). If she needs phase 2 it will be an additional $4500.
My DD, 13, just got braces 2 weeks ago. I went with a in network orthodontist. Most will take our insurance, but the in network, has agreed to a lower fee. If we had a different insurance it would have been $8600. So the new fee is $4600. The insurance will pay $2000, IF DH stays with the same company during the treatment (estimated to be 36 mos). So every quarter they pay a potion, if he leave before, we have to pay off the remainder.
When I was a kid, the insurance just wrote a check for the whole ortho amount allowed. Mine were $4000, back in 1979 (had the worst teeth my orthodontist had seen at the time), their combined ortho insurance covered $2000 and then they had 4 year to make payments on the remaining $2000.

We've got two in braces right now, $5000 each...ouch!

DS just got his off after 22mo. They cost 5,400. our insurance paid 1,200.

good luck. I about fell off my chair when they told me how much!!

My 11 yr dd just got them this past January, they are $4700 and we have no insurance :-(.

My 9yo just got her's in and we are paying $2200 (out of pocket) to fix her crossbite. This is for phase 1. We are in Virginia.

I had the same thing and she is the only one out of all 5 of our kids who has inherited it. :headache:

I remember paying $3400 for my own braces about 20 years ago.

I think it's a YMMV thing, of course.

The dentists have recommended all my kids get braces, but the orthodontist never agreed! Just because your dentist suggested it, I wouldn't worry about the cost until the orthodontist sees your child.

DD13 has had hers for about a year, they were $4900...Got a free evaluation from another orthodontist that was less, $4100...but he reminded me of a used cars salesman, also said they would put them on immediatley, she was 8, and would wear them for three years. I got a second opinion, love her current orthodontist...he was priced higher, but he said we should wait till she's 12..so we did, she only has to wear them 14 months, she has 3 months to go.

Get a second opinion.

About using a general dentist for orthodontic work...I wouldn't.

My husband's family did that with him because it was cheaper.
And it was cheaper because the guy just straightened up DH's top teeth, but he still has problems with his bite that were not corrected.

Orthodontists go to school for those additional years for a reason.

Also, the orthodontist we used for our kids and the orthodontist my mom used for us offered an interest free payment plan.

Mom paid $25 a month just about forever as she had three kids in braces. And if my husband's dear mother had quit smoking and used that money on braces he could have had them done right.

When I go to the dentist even now he will often comment on what a good job the orthodontist did on my teeth.

DS12 just got his braces off an hour ago! He had them for 20 months.

We paid $2350, the insurance paid about $1400, I think. I know that's what our portion was, not 100% on how much insurance covered. The MAX insurance would do was $1600.
