Daphne's Babies The FINAL Update!

So adorable! If I lived closer, I'd take one of those orange ones!

I'm not an expert on kitty colorings, but just because the face is white doesn't mean that the kitty is a calico. You can have a tiger with white on the face. It will probably become more clear when he/she gets older. Have you determined the sex of that kitten yet?

Ready for your head to spin, LOL?

In order for a cat to be tricolor (and they are rarely male), it must show a combination of:

1) white
2) red/cream
3) black/gray/blue

Now, there are different ways that tri-colors present:

With a calico, there is a significant amount of white, and the two (black/red) colors are broken up into distinct patches.

With a tortoiseshell or 'tortie', the three colors are blended and don't form distinct patches. A tortoiseshell may have significant portions of white as well, but the remaining colors are blended (this particular pattern is called a tortoiseshell and white).

To complicate this further, LOL, you have the:

"Torbie", or patched tabby
, is a tortoiseshell where the tabby pattern is very distinct all over the cat.

A calico or tortoiseshell may have distinct tabby pattern on the red or cream patches, but no patterning on the other color. This isn't a torbie. A torbie is clearly patterned all over the cat -- though never on the white.

Then you have 'dilute' coloring...which means: the colors appear washed out and are lighter versions. If the cat is diluted, all its colors are diluted. If the cat is not diluted, none of its colors are diluted.

Color combinations:

CALICO OR TORTOISESHELL PATTERNS, UNDILUTED*
*patterns with black are just designated by pattern, not by color

calico (black, red, and white patches)
tortoiseshell (black, red and white mixed up)
chocolate calico/tortoiseshell (chocolate, red and white)
cinnamon calico/tortoiseshell (cinnamon, red, and white)

CALICO OR TORTOISESHELL PATTERNS, DILUTED*
*Dilute tortoiseshells are often referred to as (color)creams.

dilute calico (blue, cream, and white patches)
bluecream (blue, cream, and white swirls)
lilac-cream or lilac calico (lilac, cream, and white)
fawn-cream or fawn calico (fawn, cream, and white)

TORBIE OR PATCHED TABBY PATTERNS, UNDILUTED
brown patched tabby (brown tabby, red, and white*)
*A brown tabby is genetically a black tabby
chocolate patched tabby (chocolate tabby, red, and white)
cinnamon patched tabby (cinnamon tabby, red, and white)

TORBIE OR PATCHED TABBY PATTERNS, DILUTED
blue patched tabby (blue tabby, cream, and white)
lilac patched tabby (lilac tabby, cream, and white)
fawn patched tabby (fawn tabby, cream, and white)

Hope that helps....

in my not even close to professional opinion, from the pictures shown...it looks like Sarabi is tri-colored because she appears to be presenting white, red and black...or a dilute version of the above. But, it does appear to be 3 colors.

As T&B said, this will definitely become more apparent as the kitten gets older.

Wendy, in the picture of Venus in my signature (the bottom picture), I think she looks more like a dilute calico, which is what she was listed as when we got her, at least in one of the descriptions. My vet called her a dilute torbie, because she said she doesn't have enough white. I read and not everyone thinks that the amount of white has anything to do with them being considered a calico or not. One thing is for certain--Venus is a CAT! And a naughty one at THAT! :teeth:

In this little kitten pic of Belle, you can see that she is a torbie (tortoise/tabby combo). She is now almost 6yo and fat, but in this picture her colorings can be seen better and it's just such a darn cute picture.

Here's a new picture. I think Daphne lined them up for me, so I would stop bringing that annoying bright light in to the nest!

Left to right
Kiara, Kovu (he has a bigger white mark on his face), Simba, Sarabi, and the "pillow" is Nala.

They all gained considerable weight between 18 and 31 gms. Simba being the one who gained the most, and is official the "porker" of the bunch at 145 gms, with Kovu in a close second at 136 gm, Kiara 132 gm, and Sarabi and Nala - 126. They both weighed the same yesterday, and weigh the same today!!!

Duh, I was thinking that Sarabi was one of the orange kittens...I should just slow down and look at the pictures! :rotfl: Yes, tri color equals calico or some variation. :teeth: I'm a slow one for sure. :)

Tigger is colored much like Cassie, only her hair is shorter. That's Maia in the background... she's in need of a day at the puppy spa!

Here are a front view and side view of Sarabi - the one whose coloring is in question. Like it does not really matter, they are all babies, and cute too!

 I am in love!!! I shouldn't even be reading this thread! Thank goodness I don't live anywhere near you and am not planning on any more kittens for quite some time or I'd be in deep yogurt! :rotfl: I would so take Simba and Nala.

One of my cats is a calico.

This was taken when she was a lot younger. She getting old, poor thing, and is nearly 13 or so.

To the poster who asked what the perfect number of cats are... less than 16! :rotfl: If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't have more than 6 and 5 of those would be females. The males seem to be a lot more maintenance.

True, lots of varying opinions with the white...but I agree with you, I would be looking more at whether there are patches or blended colors...

I would call Venus a dilute calico too, does she have stripes at all?

Belle is too cute! yeah, you can see the red on her paw and the stripes...she's an easy one.

Wow, awesome weight gain for the ones that gained alot!! And a few of mine did not gain anything the first day....look for more of a pattern over the next few days.

I re-checked a couple of them... :confused3 , it really seemed like a lot. The one that gained the most was the one we were originally concerned was not getting enough to eat.... looks like I might be able to return the can of formula!!!:)

Well, I officially didn't get anything done work wise today... I guess I will be working during "24"!

She is very pretty!

I drove through your area the other weekend on the way to Busch Gardens. I thought of you and your sunsets!

No stripes oon Venus and as you can tell her the signature picture, her head looks more calico, but her body is more gray, and tortie like.

Virgo, I was the one that asked about the number of cats. Funny, but my 2 male cats are calmer in general. My female adult is sweet and my only lap cat of the 4, but she is more demanding. It's the female kitten that is into trouble. Well, it's the male kitten who climbs me like I'm a tree and who is VERY playful, but then he is also calm. I'll stick to the 4 I have for awhile, though.

I hereby declare Venus a "Tortico", the first of the 2006 new and improved tri-color variation....

24 hour update... 5:00am
I was up early (went to sleep late - not enough sleep...) when Maia decided she wanted Princess to get up and play!

So I figured I would get the morning routine out of the way - turning on coffee, taking dogs out, giving them their morning treat, giving cats their morning treat (canteloupe) when all of a SUDDEN - there is Mommy Daphne on the counter. I guess she needed a break from the nest and was able to push the Mbath door open (double door- top latch not latched) - I instantly was worried that something was wrong that she would leave the babies alone, so I rushed in, and they were all curled up in two groups sleeping soundly. I guess she knew they were full, and warm and safe. I took her food back in and she followed, only to come back out a couple minutes later. She was having a drink of water (she has water in the nest) Kittens still quiet, but by now Tara is up (she slept in my room last night), so she was overseeing the babies! Everyone is back to sleep (except me of course!)'

I noticed this morning that the female that I was considering a tiger cat, I guess genetically would be considered a calico too - her face is white.

Today once Tara is not here, and I can do things without an audience I will try and get some better close ups of each and create a web page for all those who are interested in their progress. (In between working.....)

That's not an issue... I will get them to the airport LOL. I'm closer to the airport than WDW!!

- Vaccinations would be no problem, I would get them prior to the "handoff"

- Approved carriers could be purchased locally as well!

I knew that I had investigated flying with animals prior to moving the FL, but I could not remember all the details, and I know some is specific to individual airlines.

Thanks for the info!

Well, DH and I had the day off today for his biannual hospital trip, and we talked about it some more at the cafeteria. He doesn't seem opposed to the idea! He just said, "I can't believe you're going to do this." And that he doesn't believe the airline will let us put them in the cabin. We're flying American so I'll check it out (unless someone else around here finds out for me before I do.............you all are so involved in helping this happen! It's very sweet.). I haven't told the kids anything, just in case. I can't believe DME wouldn't let you on...........whyever not? You can use kennels at WDW, doesn't anyone bring their pet? But if makinorlando can do the airport, then that's all right too. I can't wait to see what color their eyes are. That other calico is so pretty too...........Nala, but I want Keara. I thought today to call her Shenzi, because of the spots, but PoohandWendy already has that name cornered! I'll have to keep thinking. Which is the orange with more white? Kovu? I like him. I'm all excited! It's been forever since we've had a baby anything in the house!

Tigger&Belle said:

Well this is good news, more liberal policy than I would have anticipated.
They would both be able to be in the same carrier -
The kennel may contain two (2) dogs or cats but they must be the same species, ages between 8-weeks and 6-months, and weigh less than 20 lbs.
and they will accept 5 per flight in the coach cabin.... what are the chances of four other folks wanting to take kittens home as Disney souveniers......

Tara just took 27 pics of the kittens with a disposable camera, and I dropped another one off earlier. We will see what she got in the way of individual shots.

She is loving this. Except she really didn't want to be in school today. I had lunch with her and she tried everything to talk me into bringing her home!

PS - did any of you see post #87 where I posted pics of the one whose coloring is in question? It's a pretty good pic of the face and body.
