Danger of turbulance on a plane

I just wanted to share this article, just in the chance that it might change even one person's mind that their child should be in a car seat on an airplane and not held as a lap baby.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32266096/ns/travel-news/

I saw that on the news this morning.. Scary stuff.. I know that people have a tendency to think, "That will never happen to us", but why take the chance if you don't have to? :confused3

We hit really bad turbulence last fall on our way back from WDW. All I could think of was how glad I was that DN was in a seat and buckled in.

I was on a flight that did that over a decade ago. I have worn a seatbelt every minute of every flight since (other than a handful of restroom trips). I go to the restroom before every flight to avoid that need.

I fly a lot, but this was dangerous. Had there been a lap baby on this flight, I serioulsy doubt that they would have survived without serious injury. I was thrown into the baggage compartment above me and then onto the floor, and I was seated.

I have been on a few similar flights since, but my lapbelt saved me from injury...

The first time I ever flew on an airplane was in 1986.. From that flight forward (having read about turbulence and actually experiencing some on the return flight), I have always worn my seat belt at all times while in the air..

I'm only 89 lbs. - so it wouldn't take much for me to be flying all over the place.. Now imagine a baby/toddler.. Regardless of how tight someone is trying to hang on to that child, they basically become just like a greased pig..
I understand that it's a personal choice, but it's not a chance I would ever take..

I don't think that anyone disputes that turbulence happens. Or that a lap baby would be in danger if turbulence that severe happened on his or her flight. BUT ... how many planes fly every day? How many people are on those planes? How many people fly per year and how many of them are hurt by turbulence every year? A very small percentage. Let's try not bash the parents who choose to fly with lap babies, shall we?

Exactly!

People are killed when buses roll over as well. And yet how many children ride...sans seat belts... on Magical Express, or on ANY public transportation bus.

Agreed - my post was not meant as a bash. Parenting is an adventure... :goodvibes
I wasn't talking about anyone specifically on the thread, so please don't take offense :flower3: ... I was just trying to head the inevitable comments off at the pass, KWIM.

FWIW, we always wear our seatbelts even after the fasten seatbelt sign goes off.

Everything we do in life is a personal choice - from parenting to finances.. People have their own comfort zones - and that's how it should be.. We make our choices based on information that is available to us - and I believe that's what this thread was intended to be: informational.. What people do with it is their choice - as it should be..:goodvibes
