I have a son who dances
His first school was very small. They were not in it for the money. They were fortunate enough to receive small donations from local businesses. Local schools rented their auditorium cheaply for the recital. Recital for the parents was very cheap. I think it was $30 per class. So, if you were in just ballet, it was $30. If you took ballet and jazz, it was $60...and so on. The lady who ran the school also had a small kids company that performed ballets 2 times a year. The school furnished the costumes for the ballets and the recitals. The parents helped to make the costumes to keep costs down. Each parent received 2 free tickets. I think additional ones were maybe $5 each. Seats were first come first serve. There was no assigned seats. They made small profit off the cookies we made and drinks we furnished. Some other things to make profit was handcrafts.
His last school depended on recitals for their profit. They had to rent a theater, supply the services of a coffee shop, buy flowers, etc (things are a bit different over here). It was expensive. Overall, the recital cost us 1,000 Euro. Back then, the conversion to American was about $1,500. It included the cost of costume and tickets. We were given 4 tickets and had assigned seats. The school assigned them for us.
His current school does not depend on recitals for their profit. The school is attached to an opera house, so there is no need to rent a facility for the recital. They also receive a percentage of the money donated to the opera house. This makes tuition cheaper. In addition, the school has access to the costuming department that also dresses the professional company and opera. Parents don't have to pay for costumes.
The only real expense to parents is tickets. The past years have been 15 Euro each. Tickets go on sale at the box office. Each family gets 4 tickets. The seats are assigned and they are first come first serve. It does not matter if you choose the main floor or a box seat, the tickets are all 15 Euro. The only seats you can't have are in the king's box. Those would be sweet seats

Once everyone from the school has received their available 4 seats, any additional seats go on sale first come first serve and they too are 15 euro.
This year I expect the price to go up. They just did a major renovation of the entire building. I am almost afraid to see what they will cost this year. Even if they were 50 Euro each, it is still cheaper than what I paid at the other school.
I truly believe the cost of recital depends on how much money the school wants/needs to make in profit. One that does not receive donations will most likely charge more for recital.
