Could someone with a daughter please educate me on this - what it is, how much does it cost, how do you hook it up, does it need anything special like an X -box or is it just a DVD, etc.????????? I have two daughters, 12 (by Christmas) and 17. Is this a good Christmas gift idea???? Thanks in advance....

We got my 9 y/o dd one last year - it's her favorite thing to do! We have the Playstation one, and the dance pad is wireless (definitely a must). She and all her friends love playing it, and she's gotten pretty good at it! I think we spent around $30 on the game, and another 30 on the dance pad. It's a great gift idea!

WE don't have one - but I'm thinking about getting it some time down the line....

It's a game that you purchase for either XBox, Play Station, and I think another game system.

You also need a dance pad - these range from $20.00 - to over $100.00.

I think the game is around $25-$30.

Then you have to add in the gaming system.

Kids and adults both love DDR!

So if we have a PlayStation we would just need a game and a dance pad? Does it work on the older PlayStation? Or do I need a newer version?? The PlayStation we have is the one that came out I think about three years ago - it was in a blue box and was impossible to find for Christmas that year - I happened on a UPS truck at night just before closing at Toys R Us, so I felt it was destiny to get it!!!!

Most importantly, can I buy it at Target????

I'm not a young person but I have one. Great exercise! Even has a way to track calories burned!

The version I have is for Playstation 2 not sure it will work on Playstation 1.
I have seen the complete kit at Target. It includes the game and one dance pad and is about 79.00.

Sounds like a PS2.

There are 4 versions of DDR out for PS2, they may be at Target, at least the newest one (Extreme 2), but I know that Best Buy and stores like EB and Gamestop carry them.

Yes, I just went upstairs and verified - it's a PlayStation 2.

OK, keep suggestions coming - what are the 4 versions someone spoke about? Just 4 different dance experiecnes, or 4 levels of expertise? Which would be the best for a 12 year old?? (BTW, DD17 just chimed in that that would be an "Awesome!!!!" present, and she and her friends would use it, too!!! Anyone have older teens who do this??)

Thanks - you all are amazing!!!!

We bought this for our DD a couple of years ago. It hooks up to PS 2. Maybe it was just us, but we had bad luck with it and it ended up just frustrating our DD. It has to be used with an eye toy (I think that's what those little cameras are called). Anyway, I just asked my daughter about it and why she never plays with it and her response was that it was too complicated.

My DD who is 12 has this and LOVES it !! everyone pretty much covered what you need to know, except if your DD has any friends who also have the matt, they can place them side by side and verse each other which is a blast for them !! definately make sure you get the wireless matt !

My girls LOVE this game! They are now 12 1/2, almost 16 and 171/2. They all use it all the time. And when my nephews come over (right around the same ages) they also play. You definately need the mat, we bought the complete kit. The mat is kinda cheap, there are better ones that sell seperate. My girls use it for exercise and for fun. They are always trying to get me to use it, but I am a clutz and refuse to try to follow the steps with people watching me. This game is so popular they have a DDR club at the high school.

edited to add....I don't think we have an eye toy, unless it came with the complete set. I'll ask the girls when they wake up tomorrow morning.

THAT IS THE BEST GAME EVER.

It is a game that you play with your PS2 or XBOX. Basically. You insert the disk into the disk area of the PS2 or XBOX and put the pad in the controller slot. Then you play. It is really fun and great exercise. It is about 60$ for game and cheap pads and 100$ for game and good pads.

DH's sons in Ohio LOVE this thing. It's all the rage there with boys! They all three do it and they are 23, 20, ,and 16! the 16 YO lost 50 pounds in 6 months all to DDR! He's addicted!

In case anyone has younger DD/DS's, they DO have a version for GAMECUBE featuring Mario! We got this for DS6 for Christmas and I know he'll go crazy! I think it's the only version for Gamecube.

4 versions = 4 separate versions of the game available for PS2. DDRMax, DDRMax2, DDR Extreme, and DDR Extreme 2.

Extreme 2 was just released in the last couple months and can easily found bundled with a dance pad. It should be about $60. The other games can be found for about $30 (maybe the older ones can be found for $20, not sure though)

I actually bought the Mario version for the Gamecube for myself (I grew up on Nintendo, and will always be a Nintendo kid) and yes it is the only version of DDR for the 'Cube. And while it uses Mario to grab onto a yonuger audience, the songs in hard and super hard mode are quite difficult for me, lol.

The DDR games don't NEED an eye toy in order to play, but Extreme 1 and Extreme 2 include mini-games that are compatible with the eyetoy (and the games do not come with it, but like I said, its not mandatory.)

DD 16 has this and loves it. Even DS 19 plays it when he comes home from college. She had a friend over who has one and they played with the two mats on one system. Its also really good workout.

This is going to be DD11's main gift this year. That's all she has been talking about. We have our eye on the bundle at Best Buy that is about $60. I'm really hoping that it will keep her active. All of my girls love to dance, so I think this will be fun for them all. I admit that I love to watch the kids do this in the arcades. I am so envious and wish I could do it as good as they do. Who knows, I just might sneak in their room and try it myself. Shhhh! ;)

DS 15 loves this game and been playing it for about 2 years now. Just a word of caution, once they get comfortable with the cheap pads they will start asking for the arcade version which starts at about $1000. DS and DH made a dance pad for about $100 which is comparable to the ones sold on line for a lot more money.

I think I'm going to have my daughter try this again. She got this when she was eight (two years ago) and said it was too complicated/didn't work well. She's ten now and might have better luck.

My DD age 11 really wants this for Christmas but we only have Game Cube. I know they have the Mario one for GC.

Is that one going to be too babyish for her? I was thinking of getting it so that dS age 8 could play too, but will she be disappointed?

does it have regular music too? or just mario music?

My 16 yo nephew is an expert with this game- even my decidely anti-dancing 16 yo son plays enjoys it when we visit nephew. I'm considering getting it for my 7 year old- he surprise us all dancing up a storm at a recent wedding and I think he'd love it!
