So the 6 teen girls picked Mambo #5 to tap to this year. They all agreed rather quickly on a song - yea!!!. They also agreed on what they want to wear. They want to stay true to Lou Bega's zoot suit look - ie no dress and no bright colors.

We can't find a "zoot suit" in any of the costume books the studio has. In searching on line and looking at alternate idea's, this is what we are going to bounce off the girls, unless anybody can point us towards something we haven't yet seen.

This is as zoot suitish as we can get:

It's in the guys section. Instead of the long sleeve shirt, we would get them a sleevles shirt to go under the vest. He doesn't wear a tie in the video, so they could either wear it or leave the shirt collar open. And the fandora is a must!!

Good idea or bad? I know for my DD, she would careless about it being a guys costume, but I know how some girls are.

I like it.

Perhaps to help with balking teens, maybe they can pick a unique shirt color to go underneath.

We saw that in a few numbers last year. Uniform look, but color variation.

The male section was probably wise since the costumes will be constructed for the dance moves.

I think it is cute for the number and I cannot imagine WHY they would balk about it being a boy's costume since they are intentionally trying to dress in teh style of a man:confused3

Who understands the inter workings of a teenagers thought process. They want to wear a suit, but show them the picture with a guy in it instead of a gril....who knows what reaction you might get from one or more of them.

I know from last year, the one girl is...ummmmm - a huge pain in the rear. Last year in jazz, she hated the one costume everybody else loved, but for whatever reason they all agreed to go with what she liked. By the time recital rolled around, she hated the costume she picked out and wished they had gone with the other one with all the color to it. I so wanted to smack the living daylights outta her. :headache: :rolleyes1

Here's a couple of costume websites to look at; maybe you haven't checked here yet:

www.weissmanscostumes.com
www.costumegallery.net

Also, maybe check Discount Dance Supply or Leo's for costumes. Good luck!

Have you tried http://www.ciccidance.com/? There is a link to the 2011 catalog.

I don't know if exactly what you're looking for is in there but it's worth a shot!

Thanks for these. I will see if we have these catalogs already. I know we have about 5 of them and there could be more on the way.

Photoshop some long hair, makeup and ****s on the picture and they'll be none the wiser. :rotfl:

:lmao: It sounds like that girl might balk no matter what--she'll find a reason:rolleyes:

Heck, DS is often the only boy in a routine. Twice over the years we have combined boy's basics with parts of a girl's costume to make something that coordinated with what the girls wanted to wear--and he manages to deal with it. I am pretty sure a lot of the costumes I have seen over the years on the girls have been boy's clothes too (at the least the overalls one year were and I am pretty sure another set was as well). I have never heard of any of them caring what gender wore the item in the catalog.

If the drama queen pipes up, remind her about last year:rotfl:

Weisman's has a "zoot suit" DRESS costume on clearance, it is red and black. Kind of not what you're looking for.

IMO, a good choice for this would be loose-cut black color guard jazz pants, paired with a white sleeveless undershirt and black suspenders, plus the hat, and I'd go with a black hat. It gives off a very Latin vibe, but is cheaper and easier to dance in than a full jacket. Kind of like this look: http://www.stock-photography-images...98552/Stylish-young-man-standing-by-window/16

These pants would work, I think: http://www.bandmans.com/jazz-pants-p-8057.html

Check out Wolff Fording (Page 119 of the catalog) http://www.pageturnpro.com/Progress-Printing/29949-2012-Catalog/119.html

You could also check out Art Stone. They usually have one or two that look like what you are looking for.

Another idea would be to do what our Teen/Adults did one year when they did a tap to Zoot Suit Riot - they all wore black jazz pants, white button down shirts with long sleeves and ties (can't remember the color tie). It was simple but looked really good on stage. Another year they used the song Black Betty and did something similar - they wore the black pants, white shirt and then rolled the sleeves up and had a black leotard underneath the shirt. Again simplicity, inexpensive and nice looking on stage.

Curtain Call usually carries a zoot suit type of costume.

Also check Revolution. They are a newer company with some great prices and they include all accessories at no extra cost.

I hear you on the boy costuming. There's ONE boy on my daughter's competition team. Last year, I put pink trim and buttons on the black velvet vest he wore for the pointe piece (no, he wasn't on pointe). He loved them..." my pink buttons"!:goodvibes I made the buttons from some white satin bridal buttons and colored them with a sharpie. He is a senior this year; I think for a graduation present, I will make him some "good luck" pink buttons to carry with him to college!

LOVE THIS!!!!! I don't care if they don't want color or not. This is a perfect fit for the song. I know that we hadn't seen this one before. I will be forwarding the teacher the info. Thank you for the link!!!
When pricing it out make sure ou check to see if the accessories are included. I'm sure you know that many times they are not.

All studios are different, but I have a budget that I have to stay within. My parents pay a flat fee.

Art Stone has had this for a couple of years. One nice thing is that you actually could use all colors. Each girl could have their favorite color and the tie, suspenders, gloves and hatband are included in the price. I will forewarn you, it is a bit pricey ($56 for Child Med & Large, $66 for Child X-Large, Adult Small, Med & Large & $71 for Adult X-Large)

This would actually fall perfectly into our price range. Costumes run us $70 a piece. Unless your in one of the production numbers and then your cost can go way up.

Although, they did say for the Footloose number, the cost be easy on the budget. The girls are so hoping that they just do jeans, matching shirts and let them wear whatever shoe they have that they can dance in.
