Daisy Leaders Unite! Girl Scouts USA!

Subscribing...

I am helping lead a group of 1st grade Daisies. Not sure what it is that we're working towards this year. (Last year we earned petals.) The GS rep. couldn't answer my questions, just told me that the new books were in and that I should pick one up. :confused3

Subbing...my dd is still 4, but I had been recently thinking that when she is in kindy next year, I might want to try and lead (or co-lead) her Daisy troop. I was a Brownie way back when and loved it when I had a good leader, then moved schools and had a lame troop and dropped out, so I know it really depends on the leader. Ds is a Cub Scout now, but that is very differently organized! And they didn't have Daisies back in my day, so that part is new to me too!

I'm a second year Daisy leader of first grade girls. I have 3 co-leaders and a troop of about 18. They earned all of their petals last year. There is a book for the second year. There are a bunch of flowers (each one a color of the petals, I believe) who are Daisy's friends. Each flower has a cute bio. The main focus seems to be on growing a garden (portable). You have to do certain things to earn pieces of a big patch (no petals for the second year). I have only skimmed the book but have to get cracking on it as our first meeting is Friday! Our GS rep wasn't very helpful either. I really don't think anyone really knows what we're supposed to be doing. I think this year we'll just have to figure it out for those who come after us.
One new thing is that Daisies can now sell magazines, candies and nuts and the cookies. Our troops will have money now!! :cool1:
For any first year troop leaders, google "Daisy Girl Scouts" or "Daisy Petals" etc. and you will get a TON of ideas to help you plan activities!!

I was happy to see this thread, as I also signed up to be a Daisy leader this year. My DD is in kinder. We are having our 1st meeting on Wednesday. It is going to be interesting. If they all show up we will have 11 girls.

I'm a Daisy leader too for a group of kindergarteners. We will have 7 girls in our troop. Our parent's meeting is scheduled for Sept 30.

The new book this year are called the Daisy Flower Garden Journey Book. There is a Journey patch that you earn that has 3 parts: a bee, a watering can and a flower.

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's ideas!

Do we do the petals all in the first year & then do the garden atch stuff during the second year? I thought we had to stretch out the petals throughout the two years.

The curriculum has changed for this year and now the garden is what you do (although you can still choose to do the petals if you want). Then next year, they will come out with a new Journey book that you can go through for your second year of Daisy.

I know the cirriculum changed but I thought the garden was in addition to the petals- they are still selling the petals & we were told to do them. I just thought we had to stretch them out & add the garden stuff.

Any ideas on how to present the Daisy Law/Promise? We were thinking of the handprint for the promise but I am kind of stuck on the law. We don't want to just put it on an index card because most of the girls don't read yet. So we are trying to think of a fun way to present it so they can go over it with their moms. thanks for any insight!

We are making a bracelet with each of the colors representing part of the law.

Light blue: Honest and Fair...The sky is blue and always fair...it rains on everyone or shines on everyone
Yellow: Friendly and Helpful... Yellow is cheerful and friendly and the color of the sun which helps all living things grow.
Lt. Green: Considerate and Caring... Light Green reminds us of the tiny new plants that sprout in the spring and require our consideration and caring to grow into healthy plants.
Red: Courageous and Strong... Red it the color of blood, it represents strength and bravery
Orange: responsible for what I say and do...Orange is the color of fire, it reminds us to always be responsible for fire can consume everything in its path if we do not use it responsibly.
Purple: Respect myself and others...Purple is the color of nobility and honor and it commands respect.
Magenta: Respect Authority... Magenta is a combination of Red and Blue, the colors of our Flag, it commands our respect.
Green: Use resources wisely... Green is the color of the grass and the trees and it reminds us to be careful to keep our earth green.
Rose: Make the World a better Place... Rose reminds us of the beautiful flower and to always find beauty in the world and try to leave it better than we found it.
Violet: Be a sister to every Girl Scout, just like the violet flower that grows in groups, we grow best surrounded by our sister Girl Scouts.

We are doing out parents meeting tomorrow - anyone else done their meeting yet? Any insights, help, hints??

I'm jumping on here too because I just agreed to be the co-troop leader for my DD's Daisy troop. I'm actually going to a meeting about it tomorrow. We live in a very small town, so it's one of the few positive things for girls to do.

Does your Council have a Links book? We printed ours off the Council wesbite & it was filled with ideas and local programs for the kids to do - we are trying to incorporate as many as possible. We are going to do the Goblin Gala next month which looks like fun!

I've been doing GS for a number of years now and have had a very active and enthusiastic group of parents to thank for much of that. We make sure to get EVERY family involved from the very first meeting. We make it clear (very politely) that we are not a babysitting service and are volunteers with busy lives, too.

We pass out sign up sheets at our meeting for snacks and a list of 'helper' jobs. Some have to do with helping directly with the girls at meetings, but we offer several things for parents whose schedules would make this difficult. One computer saavy mom does our newsletter and distributes it by email. Another mom keeps track of permission slips and reservations for field trips and council events. We have a cookie mom, a family partnership mom, and a checkbook helper.

We also have worked towards connecting with our families. Our mom's meetings have been at my home when they were very young and we enlisted the help of cadettes to keep the girls and sibs occupied with activities either outside or crafts in the basement. Now that we are older, we oftern meet at Perkin's on a Sunday night after kiddos are in bed. We have a couple of family events during the year too; award ceremony/pizza parties, pot luck picnics, etc. I really think that we have been successful because everyone feels connected.

The meeting went well I thought. The only time I was really thrown was when we were passing out the snack/craft mom sheet (we were asking each mom to help out once during the year) and one of the moms kind of flipped out that she has a younger daughter & what would she do with her & can she bring her otherwise she cannot help with anything. We kind of said she could bring her but weren't sure & afterwards talking about it, we decided we really didn't want younger siblings there - not fair to the daisies girls. It was kind of weird because I never would have thought about it - I have 3 girls & when I was doing things with my older two, I made arrangements for my youngest. I would not have thought to bring her. I have to touch base with everyone & let them know this - I know this will affect some of the moms since they have younger children but I just don't think it fair to the daisies. We are meeting in the school & there really would be no place for the younger kids to go. And I am not sure about the liability either.
But we passed out the events calendar, exaplined what we would like to do during the year, the kids had cookies & joice, played with each other in the playground & got to know each other which was the main thing I wanted. I knew most of the moms already. So at this point we are putting together our first troop meeting stuff & waiting to see if they are going to add any more girls.

where will you guys be holding your daisy meetings? i picked up a paper yesterday to see if i could get a room at the school, but at the bottom of the page it was talking about charges.

The Link is my lifesver lol.. I know we are in the same council. I have the the rough copy and than the final printed versions. I already registred for a trip in November and I am waiting for a few moreto open up.

Goblin Gala does look like fun.So does Eco treck. We are camping there next month so didnt want to be at the same location 3 weekends in October.

Our school is out, we were told no meetings there, so we've done other locations. We have not been able to get a place for meetings consistently, so we vary it each meeting. We've had meetings at different parents' homes, parks and at where our "field trip" is. For my older DD, they had meetings at one of the community rooms in our library or community rec. center free of charge. Typically you are doing different activities at meetings anyway, so it works out.

At the moment, our troop has 3 girls :sad1: . The daughters of the two leaders and one other girl whose mom I had to basically beg to enroll her daughter. We have one more that might be interested, and I hope she decides to join too.
