I know the DVC website said that the free D23 memberships would be available on June 17, 2013 (checked this morning). It could just be coincidence, but the Disney Store is offering sign ups for a free D23 membership today.

D23 changed their mind after the free for DVC was announced. From DVCMember.com:

D23 The Official Disney Fan Club is creating a special, complimentary D23 Membership level, and Disney Vacation Club has learned that plans call for registration to begin online at www.D23.com in June.

Since 2009, Disney Vacation Club and D23: The Official Disney Fan Club have collaborated in a variety of ways to share insider Disney news and entertainment with Members of both communities.

Last fall, the two communities came together once again to dream up ways to give Disney Vacation Club Members a new, complimentary level of D23 Membership that would provide access to many of D23's exclusive benefits, including the just-announced gated portion of D23.com, which will include vintage videos, celebrity interviews, sneak peeks at upcoming Disney films and Park attractions, never and rarely seen content from the Walt Disney Archives and more.

While work continued on the necessary online registration tool, growing excitement within the company around the gated web content prompted the decision to "open the vault" even wider, expanding the complimentary D23 Membership level to unlock the magic for all Disney fans. D23 looks forward to serving Disney Vacation Club Members and other passionate Disney fans with this engaging content in the months and years ahead.

I signed up through the Disney Store this morning. I'm assuming all free memberships will have the same benefits so I didn't see a reason to wait. If I find out that the DVC one has extra benefits, I guess I'll sign DH up for that one.

There's only one free D23 membership level. There will not be a DVC version of the D23 membership.

I signed up thru the Disney store promo - kind of disappointed. Free is free, but I was under the impression that DVC members were going to get a free year of regular D23 membership, not this stripped down version. Ah well.
