D23 EXPO THREAD - See you in 2019!

So with Saturday tickets now sold out, what's everyone's opinion on second best day to go? We are local, but unfortunately, it took us too long to find out our schedule availability that weekend. We are leaning towards Sunday. Is Sunday worth going to? Is there still merchandise available by Sunday? Or are things pretty much wrapped up?

You may want to wait until the list of smaller panels comes out to see if there are any on Friday or Sunday you are particularly interested in. That could sway you either way. Also, the shopping starts to run out the last day. I remember specifically the Dream Store (Expo store) was running out of sizes.

I made reservations for both the Marriott and VGC, potentially to switch at some point (before or after the expo). Now that I'm somewhat more informed and our plans are made, we are just staying at the Marriott and cancelling VGC.

I noticed some of our VGC days are now available, in case anyone is looking:

Merchandise, yes. Most exclusives, probably not. Some things might be allocated per day (I don't remember if they did it that way in 2015), but by Sunday anyone who didn't get through the line in time on the other days will commit to wait for hours for their last chance. It depends if you're just going to walk around and see stuff or if you really want exclusives. If you're mostly going for exclusives you could end up waiting hours in a store line, just to find very little left.

Thank you for the advice! Much appreciated!

So... my friend who has a gold membership purchased our expo tickets for us but I just have a basic free membership and my husband doesn't have one at all.

Is there anything we won't even have a chance to do? I am wondering if we are going to find it to be worth it.

Thank you!

It was the least crowded on that Friday in 2015, if that's your main concern. I was able to get more done on Friday that any of the 3 days of the expo.

It could be totally different this year, though.

@jamalana Sundays have been slower in the past, the big push for the last few Expos was Disney Infinity. That, of course, is now a thing of the past.

I went to the Frozen presentation in 2015. I got there about 30 minutes before, and it didn't fill up. Kristen Bell and Josh Gad sang, and Ginnifer Goodwin, Lana Parilla and Josh Dallas were in the audience! It was kind of unbelievable, especially since it was during the Frozen craziness. I'm so glad I went, even though I wasn't sure I'd get in that late!

I wanted to go to that but we were in line to meet Marty Sklar and didn't want to leave the line. They were announcing it over the loudspeakers trying to get people to go.

@keahgirl8 I'm sorry I missed that one, I think we were on stun and either in the Aulani/AbD/DVC panel or waiting for that panel. :rotfl:

It was crazy! I was totally wiped out, so I wasn't sure if I would go. I wanted to, but I was so tired of standing in lines. I decided I'd wander over there and see how bad the line was. I couldn't believe it!

Maybe they were passing out those IASW hippo cards and that held everyone's attention.

Since we're sharing expo stories, here's mine! I'm a solo traveler (though my friends are joining me for the latter part of the trip this year), and don't have any other large con experience to draw from. I attended in 2013 and 2015, and 2015 was a far better experience (though it involved what seemed like days of waiting in the depths of the convention center for overnights).

I made the mistake of trusting the guidelines in 2013, thinking that no one would line up before the time stated in the rules. When I got to the ACC at 5 AM for the Expo Floor line, I found the entire courtyard filled with a snaking queue of people, and ended up somewhere in the middle of the pen. After that, I waited 3 hours to get into the Disney Store (really wanted the designer couple dolls, which in hindsight were pretty easy to get during wide release), and shuffled around the Expo Floor, trying to get some energy back. After getting my second wind, I sprinted to the holding area queue for the Alan Menken/Richard Sherman concert on Saturday night, and ended up in the first section of people. It was well worth the wait and a great cap to the first day. Ended up crashing and burning the next day, and licking my wounds in Disneyland for the rest of the weekend. That said, it was my first D23, first convention ever, and first time at DL, so there were a lot of contributing factors to my exhaustion. I also cosplayed as peasant Belle and didn't factor in waiting outside in the heat, so I was swimming in sweat for most of the day. And despite what it sounds like, I had an epic time that I wouldn't trade for anything.

In 2015, I stayed at the onsite Marriott and watched the lines form from my hotel room early Thursday. I got in line at 7 PM on Thursday night, was in the second row in the basement for Expo Floor entry, and was able to hit both the Expo Dream Store and MOG within 25 minutes of being let in. I wasn't super interested in anything the Disney Store had that year, so I avoided that crazy line and enjoyed the rest of the floor with little to no waits for anything (since other folks were at the Animation Panel or shopping so early). I got to chat with Joe Rohde since I was the only one in the ACE/Pandora Exhibit, and get my Expo Floor shopping/exploring out of the way for the rest of the day. I didn't think I'd make another overnight/early day for Live Action, so I got some much-needed sleep and lined up for Parks and Resorts at 10AM the next day. Wasn't sure how crazy it would be, and I didn't want to miss it. I'm hoping it'll be better this year since last year the big announcement was made during the Live Action panel.

This year I'm going to follow a similar schedule - line up early for the Expo Floor on Thursday night, pack a more comfortable pillow in my backpack, and throw 5 - 6 books on my ipad. I'll do early bed on Friday night for a few hours and get in line for Live Action around 1 -2 in the AM. I found it tough to sleep on the overnight lines since it's bright/there's a lot of people, but hopefully this year I'll read myself into a coma for at least an hour or two. If I'm not dead, I'll do the sprint runaround for Parks & Resorts afterwards.

For anyone who's worried about traveling solo, I was able to make friends in both overnight and panel lines (and I can be shy sometimes with folks I don't know). Bathroom buddies, food seekers, you name it - some of us still chat regularly on twitter and hope to meet up again this year.

We are coming in the week before the Expo, so we are hitting on our 60 day mark to make reservations. Just booked the World of Color Dessert Party, it does provide seating, for anyone interested. I have seen WoC many times, if you count seeing it from my VGC and PP rooms, as well as from inside the park several times. But still decided to try this, glad the original show is back? I liked that better than the 60th Neil Patrick Harris version.

Probably no real urgency in booking this, but I have my planning hat on today.

I'm still anxiously waiting to hear about when fantasmic is returning. Hopefully they'll have dining packages so I can book that and not have to save a seat for hours.

I just did the same. I was on the phone booking something else for a client so I figured I'd go ahead and knock that off my personal list while I was on the line with DL anyway. I've never actually seen World of Color since this is my first time back at DL since the 70s. So getting the nice seats that come with the dessert party was a good get for us. And I nailed down Blue Bayou for dinner the night before. It's early days by DL standards, but what the heck? Those were the two dining related things I wanted to nail down so I went ahead. How very WDW of me :0)

I must be out of the loop (or demographic), but I've never heard of the Freeform channel or any of the featured programs :headache:

Freeform is the new ABC Family, which you've probably heard of. They rebranded maybe last year? The only one of those I've heard of (and watched) is The Fosters.

Right? That trading card thing was crazy. They were kind of fun to collect, but it got a little out of hand with some of them.

I definitely did not sleep in line, but I did spend a lot of time sitting and waiting for things. That part of it sounds really horrible, but I saw some amazing once in a lifetime things. I wouldn't trade anything for my expo experiences, even though they were exhausting, hot and frustrating at times. It was all worth it.

I must be out of the loop (or demographic), but I've never heard of the Freeform channel or any of the featured programs :headache:

Same here. I have heard of Freeform and some of the shows, but I know nothing about them or their stars.

We also booked the DVC tour of Soarin' today at DCA for July 12. This tour is insanely difficult to book at Epcot, but fairly easy to book at DCA. So any DVC members that are interested, you can book it today for the 12th, and a week from today for the 19th, depending on your travel plans. (its only on Wednesdays).

Also Kristen, I think your plans look very solid for the panels at the Expo. I also usually hit the floor on Friday morning, and skip the Legends ceremony. (I am super tempted to go to Legends because of Carrie and Mark, though). Hit Animation on Friday afternoon, line up overnight (if inside) by 3 am Saturday for Live Action. Do the sprint for Parks and Resorts after Live Action. I managed it last time. Not great seats, but made it in. And also agree about being alone, I ended up alone for hours at a time because of different interests in my travel group. One friend loves to roam the floors, and meet all the vendors and see the small celebrity guests there. Etc. We love to swap stories later.
