D23 announcements for Disneyland-Magicbands!

There is a setting in the app you turn on to activate the pass on your Apple Watch. Once you've done that it works just like a MB. No need to open the app to pull up the card. No need to open the wallet. Just tap the watch on the touch point.

Does it work at ALL touchpoints or only the main gate? If it works everywhere then that's just aces. But if it only works at the gate and you have to 'revert to phone' for LL, payments, PhotoPass etc I don't see any advantage over MBs.

You can read more about MagicMobile at WDW here:

https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/b...for-contactless-walt-disney-world-park-entry/
and here:

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/my-disney-experience/use-magic-mobile/
Assuming this also makes it to DL, Apple Watch can use their watch like a MB, for entry, photopass, LL, etc. (although probably not with all of the interactive MB+ features).

Thank you for the links!

The one thing it does not specifically say on either link is that you can use it for LL/LL+ access. It says 'boarding groups', but not LL/LL+. I tend to think that if you could, it'd say so just like it says for the other things it does. But who knows?

But I'm not going to be at DL til Spring and not at WDW til 2023 so I'm not going to worry too much about it right now. Besides, who knows when MB+ is going to roll out at DL anyway. "2022" is 12 months long.

So this might end up more of a “trust-me” answer, but it will work work for G+/ILL$.

why is that? Because the technology on all MBs are short range and long range RFIDs. So the MB holds only a link to your MDE profile. The profile is what the LL machine verifies if you qualify or not.

so from a tech perspective if they validate people for LL in one format, then all types of ID (Apple Watch, Apple Wallet, MDE, MB, park ticket) will work.

Thanks. Since I'm not super techie I'll have to take your word for it! And I guess we'll all find out for sure when all this stuff goes 100% 'live'.

I thought you had to have RFID in your 'device' (ie MB or watch) for the touchpoint to 'read'. And I'm pretty sure there's no RFID in my watch, at least I think there isn't.

I don’t fully understand the difference, but NFC and RFID must be very closely related technologies. I can use my watch to pay at most stores just by double-clicking and holding it near the reader. I *think* that’s NFC (Near Field Communications), not RFID. Hotel key cards are mostly RFID.

But I wonder if MB+ will use NFC instead of RFID, or even if the touchpoints are able to take information from either NFC or RFID.

Dude, you're making me even more confused! :confused3:rotfl2:

People confuse NFC and RFID all the time. RFID is just a radio barcode instead of the typical barcodes you scan at the checkout counter.

NFC tags can hold and interact with RFID so you can put a RFID tag inside a NFC tag like in the Apple Watch.

Think of RFID as a one way tag that can only say “I am XYZ”.
NFC is a 2-way data connection like BT, Wifi, etc. you can interact with NFC in different ways with and without user interactions.
One of the capabilities of NFC is that you can hold RFID tags and use them.

Lets use a practical example. MBs today use RFID tags only as I can tell. But you can use the NFC tags in the iPhone and Apple Watch and add a randomly generated RFID tag to each. This way your NFC tag can do what your MB does and more.

the new MB+ stuff sounds like they upgraded from RFID tags to NFC tags to add in more interactive functions

All of the magic bands I've seen are for wrist wearing.
What option is there if you are unable to wear one on your wrist?

If they're doing MagicBands, it makes me wonder if they might also start using RFID cards for admission, like WDW does. That's how WDW gets around most of the access issues - if you don't have a MagicBand, you just use your admission card to tap.

Changing subject... Was there absolutely nothing mentioned about the change over of splash mountain to Tiana?

That's a good question. I know they want to keep some things secret or have them be a surprise, but maybe show us 30 seconds of actors in the recording studio, or one of the new animontrics, especially Louis. It's also possible there is nothing new to report/no updates.

This might act to further optimize Genie+

If new magic bands either have low power bluetooth or wideband baked into them Disney could essentially track guests movements throughout the park. If they notice a flood of guests moving towards one part in the park they can have Genie "recommend" other areas. This takes real time data from wait times and moves it to predictive data. You don't react to a surge in wait times in Adventure land, you avoid it by "scaring" those guests into going to other lands before they actually reach Adventure land.

World of Color and Fantasmic are great news, I missed both those shows a lot! Hopefully dining/dessert packages will come back with them too!
