D-Day Invasion- "Strange"-ly Imminent!! TRIP REPORT IS UP!!

Just super quick----

YES, I missed an upgrade, which months ago, might have demanded a demotion, but considering the circumstances, I hope you'll let it slip. In a short couple weeks (or less?) we will have our final ranking upgrade to

Commanders-in-Chief!! Top brass!!

and to answer your question about gado-gado- it is one of our favorite summer meals on a hot day. It's an Indonesian dish made of steamed veggies with rice and spicy peanut sauce. IT's delicious!!! Check this site out:

http://www.globalgourmet.com/destinations/indonesia/gadogado.html

Glenn, the original is actually in the Albertina in Vienna - so you might have seen it. But speaking of mean looking. At the nice square that Liesa had a picture of in the first Achtung post, there is a "replica" in bronze which is a modern interpretation and just a warning: don't look at it if you are squeamish!! That's why I am only posting a link to the picture...

http://nuernberg-aha.de/kunst_im_freien/01_plastik_hase_juergen_goertz.jpg

We did go to the Albertina, during our Mozart walkin tour, but we only saw the Mozart stuff. I didn't even realize I should have been looking for that rabbit.

That's quite a bronze!

The we in this sentence is that you and me? Because I think you are right, that it is Glenn's thread where we met! I had totally forgotten about that! :goodvibes

It may have been my thread, but you two did the "hard work" of striking up a friendship.

And now I posted even more!! :rotfl: what is a gado gado dinner??? Looking forward to the tasty interlude! :thumbsup2

I don't know either! :confused3

And now time for another ….

TASTY INTERLUDE, brought to you by SteppeSister Industries- a leader in quality foods since a long time ago.

Today’s dish is the Smoking Onion Volcano featured nightly in the Teppan Edo Restaurant at EPCOT World Showcase. Skillfully, the chef slices an onion and stacks it by graduated sizes. I think the show would be much more fascinating if he nicked himself just once. I wonder if that’s ever happened. On the super hot cooking table thingy, he gets that baby hot. Of course, this is all assumption, since I’ve never eaten here, nor seen a Smoking Onion Volcano- perhaps they are a legend. Once hot, the knife wielding chef pours some liquid down the enter hole- that is AFTER he or she has flicked shrimp onto your lap, right, Dan?? The ensuing steam provides spectacular entertainment for young and old and countless pictures have been taken. I guess those provide irrefutable proof that these truly do exist. Like Bigfoot.

Mine is neither legend nor fancy. It is not skillfully cut or stacked, and I used soy sauce, as I was actually using these savory sensations in another dish I made tonight- see above for gado-gado. Regardless, I am very excited for the Teppan Experience, where scallops will be consumed and shrimps may fly into my lap.

Before it erupts:

A really bad picture, but the one that showed the steam best:

Now, go WOW your kids!

I am always amazed by stories like yours, Brook. It is great to hear that people really enjoy living here in Germany. Many people here complain a lot and actually talk about emigrating - to places like the US. :goodvibes

I know a fair amount of folks who are becoming fairly disgruntled with the direction of the US who'd gladly move.

Thanks! And Liesa, you are lucky that you will get to meet Brook two weeks later in WDW, she is a lovely person as well! :goodvibes

I am lucky!! I have several meets planned- and will do a comprehensive post someday soon (are you surprised?). It's interesting how you can sorta just tell who you're gonna "click" with on the DIS, isn't it? Brook is just one I know will be really great to get to know!

Well - since we Europeans have our stereotypes about Americans as well, that's only fair! ;)

It truly is fair. I would love to hear what Germans REALLY think about Americans. (Be nice!) I have been away for so long that I probably share some of them. ;) Loud, forward, wasteful and extravagent come to mind. Those are the negative ones. Positive ones might include, generous, creative, and fun-loving. :confused3

 Yes, duvet covers are very German! When I was in school we had a youth exchange programm for four weeks with a group from the USA. I think half of the kids travelled back home with duvets as their souvenir from Germany!

Duvets as a souvie?? :lmao: They ARE available in the US.

Spelling all correct, but I am afraid that at some point in the Rippe discussion there was a misunderstanding. Rippe is not hip, but rib... Therefore it is an important culinary term as well. You might see Kasseler Rippchen (-chen is the standard diminutive).

OK, THAT is certainly good to know!! Sheesh, I might have ended up with a totally different piece of anatomy on my plate!! :scared1: Not that hip is bad, but oh, ribs are SO much better! And I DO want to know what I"m ordering!!!

Yes, I was suspecting this since the German name for Blankistan is written with a ch where the English name has a kh.

I have no idea who started using the Q, but you'll see in on many map editions with Q for the kh (or ch in your case).

Poor you. I can only imagine how hot it is where you live, it must be worth than our heatwave here (today it is supposed to be 95 again... :sad2:)

We slow WAYYYYYYY down in summer. THe heat just saps it out of you so fast. I did hear from a FB friend, though, that in Parker, Arizona, it was 107 at midnight yesterday!!! Like who on earth would want to vacation at the lake in THAT kind of weather??!!! :scared1::scared1::scared1:

Yes, my American cousin (my mother's sister married an American and moved to California in the 60's) was once visiting us and got really angry about someone blowing their nose in a restaurant at the table next to us. My mother was really surprised about that (it is not considered rude to blow your nose in public in Germany as long as you don't do it in someones face and you use a tissue) and asked him what this other person was supposed to do. And he claimed it would be less rude to snuffle (that's the term my dictionary comes up with, I hope it makes sense!). In Germany that would be rude!!

and here it is absolutely no problem to cover one nostril and blow your snot out right onto the sidewalk, then wipe your hand on your pants. :confused3 Whatever...

It is your neighbourhood (two minutes walk uphill from the Elch), but the other direction than the river and the wine depot. :goodvibes

yes, I was thinking that a "loop" walk is what we'll end up doing- hitting the wall, then down from there, and along the river to the depot, and back up.

Yes, but then it is also incredibly crowded and the views along the river are much nicer when it is green! So both seasons have their advantages!! :goodvibes

You are right, I"m sure both seasons have their charms. I don't like crowds, and I don't like to be cold either, so maybe summer is best :)

That's the thing I really like about the US, especially the Western USA, everything is so new!! :rotfl:

Yes, you can get fabulous views of the strip malls built as recently as 1975. :lmao:

Thanks for the compliment! I think I really got the idea of taking more pictures of details from other DISers. When you read a lot of TRs, you realize which kind of pictures you really enjoy and after a few trips the thousandth shot of the castle becomes a tiny bit boring... :rolleyes1

Totally agreed! I love the out-of-the-ordinary perspectives and shots that show emotion- or have interesting textures and such. NOT that I can do ANY of that, but I do love the other TRs that people who CAN do that write.

It would be great if you could come, too! If you ever make it to Germany, be sure to get in touch and I will be happy to help you planning! :goodvibes Learning a language is so much more interesting when you actually get to speak it in its natural environment! :thumbsup2

Actually, it's almost impossible to learn a new language without immersion! And even then it's really hard!

Actually, much of what you see in Nuremberg isn't really old - 95% of the old city center were destroyed in WW II (most of it in one night on January 2nd, 1945 - so shortly before the war was finally over... :sad2:) But the churches and the castle were only severely damaged, not fully destroyed.

I had read that!! So sad! But I read just last night that the castle tower was left mostly standing, and the other buildings (all around the city) were reconsturcted as exact replicas from much of the original materials. So, although not purely original, it is mostly original-like, right??

First, thanks for the compliment! :goodvibes But, second, I absolutely agree - I have learned so much from other wonderful TR that it is wonderful to pass this on and hope that others find my TR as entertaining and useful as I enjoyed others!

Perfectly said. You know, I think I have learned more from TRs, than from all the other stuff on the Theme Parks and Attractions boards, Dining threads and Blogs combined.

I was planning on doing this - but had planned to ask for your permissin first! And I promise that I will not post any arm flab pictures (wasn't that somewhere in the TC3's constitution?)!

YES!! It was MOST definitely in the Constitution! :rotfl2:

Well, that's because it is a really old castle, not a fancy showy one. Sometimes I think in English the term castle is also used for building we call palace in German. Think of Neuschwanstein (the one that looks a bit like the one in WDW), it is called "Schloss" in German not "Burg" like the one in Nuremberg. (Marv, I am sure you are really happy about this German lesson for the day! ).!

Yes, I think you're right. I suppose if truth be told, we think that anything with a turret or tower is a castle. So, for us even the Berg ones are castles.
Neuschwanstein is the one we really wanted to go to, but you weren't there :goodvibes Meeting you trumped the prettier castle.

For this privilege (which also meant less taxes to pay) Nuremberg had to keep up the castle and put up the Kaiser whenever he chose to visit. That's why there aren't any funrishings. The rich citizens of Nuremberg would just have to provide their furniture during the Kaiser's visit. !

SEems like a fair trad to me. :confused3

My parents were married in that church btw...!

REALLY?! By the way, they DO live in Nuremberg right?? Will they also get to join us for dinner??

The church you can see on this picture isn't St Sebald, it is the Frauenkirche. Which has a Glockenspiel (called Männleinlaufen) in the front. You might want to try to catch this! I think it is only shown at 12 noon.!

I actuallyl meant to put that in my original post- I knew it wasn't St. Sebald and was afraid it might confuse someone. I put that in there for the fountain. St. Sebald's has twin spires like St. Lorenz, and it bigger than this one.

The green copper awning in the left corner is the big souvenir shop I told you about. :thumbsup2!

Awesome!! Thanks for pointing that out!!!

And make sure to find the golden ring in the fountain's railing, if you turn that you will return to Nuremberg one day!!!

I read that there is an ancient legend about how the ring was put on there- It has no seams, and is quite a mystery as to how is was put on without the master's knowledge or something. I'll try to find out more about this. Sounds interesting!

However, especially with regard to the later comments, and I am feeling really bad about it, I need to point out, that there still is an incorrect balance between A and E in my name as you use it. It is really MagdAlene... I know I probably should have told you earlier, but when I realized it you jsut had felt so bad about misspelling my name that I did not want to bother you about it... :guilty:!

Well, ain't that just craptastic! And here I was feeling pretty good that I had FINALLY gotten it right!! :lmao: I'm so, so sorry!! It's a vowel thing. ;) OK, Magdalene!! There ya go. :goodvibes

But you got Katharina's name correct all the way!!! :cool1:!

:woohoo::woohoo:

Juhu!!!

I remembered that when I took this tour once, they actually had laminated sheets with some explanation in English that they handed out. But I am sure that these will miss lots of the neat details and I will be happy to translate as much for you as possible! It is a really interesting tour and I am looking forward to it! Just be prepared that it will be cold in there: about 50 F!!

I saved out a fleece to wear for this tour and cool night's specifically. :thumbsup2 Yes, I KNOW having you along will add 100% to our tour!

DISisters is a great term!! :goodvibes I am really looking forward to our evening together!!!

I can't claim that as original! I think it was Cynthia who came up with it originally when we were all brainstorming for the name of Pt. 2 of this PTR.

I will be sad that it will be over so soon!! !

ME TOO!!

Oh, we won't party IN the cellars!! :scared1: Which btw were really used as bomb shelters in WW II.!

We won't ?? :rotfl:

The brewery is where you buy the tickets for the tour and end it... ;) They have a nice restaurant there as well and it is one of the places I thought your DH might enjoy... :rolleyes1 I was planning on including it in my list of restaurant recommendations.!

For some reason the tour website made it sound like there was actually a tiny little brewery down IN the tunnels?? Hmmm...

I think no matter what tour you take they ALL start there at that brewery/restaurant. I'm sure my DH would like this place- we looked at its website. But didn't go so far as to scout out the menu. The atmosphere was GREAT!

:scared1::scared1::scared1: That's at the square?? OMGosh, what kind of warped mind can come up with that stuff?!!

I like that, Katharina and I are the SISTERS!!!!! :goodvibes But there are other well known sisters here on the boards as well - I think Jen and Bubba should be the first to claim this title!

But, Katharina posts- Jen, you need to get Bubba on here!

What a fun day you have planned...and a DISmeet, :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I know you must be getting so excited. As your ticker winds down...tick tick tick...off to Germany...tick tick tick...of to the states....tick tick tick....going home to the world :)

Can't wait to see what comes up next in your plans.

Not just one, but for sure 3, and possibly 4!! I'm so excited for each one!

i'ts going soooooo fast!! Less than 30 before leaving now!!! :scared1:

Your onion tower looks so cool! I would never think to attempt that home. You rock with your awesome ideas.

Nice history lesson! That is a great tidbit of trivia to file away.
My parents were married in that church btw... :goodvibes
:thumbsup2 It's a small world after all...It's a small world after all....

Yeah, she confused me for a minute on that one. I thought I had checked your trip report and figured you would spell it correctly. I figured it was some inside joke or something between DISisters. (Liesa, sorry if it sounds like I'm making fun because that certainly wasn't my intention)
Oh, we won't party IN the cellars!! :scared1: Which btw were really used as bomb shelters in WW II.
The bomb shelter part I knew, but that still doesn't make me so certain that the DISisters can't be more of a danger to them. I do know a good bit about WWII history, but more in the Pacific since my Dad was in the Navy there during that time.
The we in this sentence is that you and me? Because I think you are right, that it is Glenn's thread where we met! I had totally forgotten about that! :goodvibes
One more title for Glenn's threads.......PSA. How great he can even unite DISisters!
mischief - me??? Never! ;)

I knew you'd come through! I thought it was you who had some great pix of this!! So cool to stage it with a gigantic Mickey oil head.

Your onion tower looks so cool! I would never think to attempt that home. You rock with your awesome ideas.

It was rather pathetic compared to the real deal, but it was fun thinking ahead to my grilly fun time, in just a few short weeks!

Nope, just completely missing the mark there. I thought I had it all figured out, then wham. :rotfl2: I think I"ve got it now.... Magdalene, Magdalene. I'm a visual learner.

I think I met Jen there too.

i did not take part in the what is this the 5th enstalment of the PRetr shame shame shame on me.

but i did get some recognition in the story, actually it was my dad that it happened too, and the reason we are not allowed to go there with him, i think one year i might just have to take him to our local one for his birthday and have him get over his fear of food stained pants, :lmao:actually it is not a fear more of a protest that they stained his nice khaki pants.

i will bring him a giant table cloth bib to keep clean.

I am so glad that we will get to meet soon - talking will be so much easier than replying and multi-quoting here!!

My friend will arrive any minute and I just hopped on because I forgot to tell you that Blankistan was in the morning news on the radio today! Our chancellor is visiting Russia today and it was said that on Sunday she will travel on to Blankistan! Perhaps you will see her? Do you get Blankistan news on TV or radio or so? And do you follow it? Well, I guess they might report about the German chancellor!

Seems like pt. 5, but we're only on pt. 3. :lmao: I wondered where you'd dropped off to, welcome back!!

I remember laughing at your story about that, and thought about your poor dad when I was making my onions today. :rotfl2: I mean not that that was funny, but that he actually boycotts it now.

I did not know that!!! I'll read about it now!! We don't normally watch the news, but will tonight! ;)

"Juhu, joy of man's desiring" by Bach. Oh wait, that was Jehu. My bad.

Yes, you steal all of my favorite readers. Oh, and Marvali too. ;)

I LOVE that piece!! I listened to it the other day- one last time before it was boxed up... :guilty:

I don't steal anyone, we all just meld, it seems.
