I was looking at Bed Bath and Beyond (because I have a coupon) at cutlery sets and I am completely overwhelemed. I would like one that includes several different knives and a set of steak knives in a butcher block. The price range (and quality?) is huge. Any advice on what to and not to look for.

Do you want high quality knives or budget knives?

I have a brother who is obsessed with good cutlery and bought me my knives over several christmases (he spent $80 on just my paring knife ). If you want high quality knives and can buy over a period of time or have a budget of a couple of hundred dollars then I'd go with Chicago Cutlery or Henckels or Wustuf. If you have a much smaller budget and need to get everything at once then you want to buy knives where the metal runs down to the bottom of the handle and the metal is visible between the two sides of the handle. The knives should have a certain weight to them and feel balanced in your hand.

Love my Wusthof....been using it several years and the difference between Wusthof and the cheaper knives is huge. Well worth the investment.

Before I buy anything at BB&B, I price it out at other stores. Many times I can get it cheaper elsewhere, even without a coupon. I usually use all of my 20% off BB&B coupons on k-cups.

For my cheapie knives I have a few giada ones from target but my good knives are Cutco. My dh had them engraved

I've been happy with my Henkels set for about 10 years now. I bought a 16 piece set and block (includes 8 steak knives) for about $500 back then and never regretted the money spent. But don't buy them at BB&B. I bought mine on Amazon! I saved well over $100.
