Current Youth Activities CM -- Ask me anything!

I want to echo the thanks for answering the questions!

My question is: I don't want my DS7 to eat in the clubs because he has a severe milk allergy. I know Disney is great with allergies but I want to be present when he is eating just to make sure of everything. Is there anytime at lunch or dinner where he would be made to sit and and watch the other kids eat or can he just play while they eat?

As a side note, we have never left him more than an hour and a half and make sure he has eaten before he goes.

Generally speaking, any kids who don't feel like eating may do whatever they please - that said, because it's a scheduled mealtime, none of us other counselors can be starting up a game of hide-and-seek, or get the kids to do a crazy glittery-glue craft (for obvious reasons) :cutie:.

This is different on port days when parents are off the ship, or on Castaway Cay where we really do make the children sit down, regardless of whether they're hungry. It's to help cover our bases when we aren't sure if parents will be coming back anytime soon to eat with their kids. :)

(And yep, we've had many parents leave their kids with us from 9- all aboard time while they were in port! )

I agree and as for a CM posting on this site, answering questions about the cruise is nice, but when a CM comes across as not happy with their working conditions or pay, maybe they should find a new job. DCL isn't the only employer out there. Sorry....

Sometimes people on the internet just make me hate the world.

Then again, 99.9999999999 percent of the Disboard folks I have met in real life are the coolest people you would ever want to know.

This thread has had a lot of great information, it has been a pleasure to read! Thank you to our anonymous CM friend!

Forgive my silly questioning, but I must know! :confused3

I keep getting slightly baffled reading things like: Muster, DH, DD, DS, FE, - I've been looking through the forums for a handy guide so I can feel more like the cool Disboards kids and less like a naive child! :scared:

Don't judge me, I've been floating in the ocean more often than not lately! And my world is pretty much defined in official Disney lingo now. ;)

I do get that you might call us the Kids Club, or Counselors "Teachers" - happens on board all the time. Or it catches me off guard that we're also considered "Cast Members". (On board, they make the distinction that only performers are Cast Members and we're CM - Crew members. A bit less special than feeling part of the big Disney Cast Member family :sad1: :grouphug:)

Anyone have a quick Disboards reference guide handy? :)

There isn't really a reference guide.

Muster - lifeboat drill
DH, DS, DD, DW - dear, darling, dumb, darn - Husband, Son, Daughter, Wife
FE - Fish Extender (if you check out the FAQ sticky above, there is a link to what a FE is - sort of a secret Santa gift exchange).

And CMs to me can be either CAST or CREW members. Equally important.

This might help with some of the abbreviations

I'm assuming Disney has rules about message boards since its pretty rare to see a CM post. Sent from my iPad using DISBoards

They do, CMs just have to be clear that they're providing their own opinion and not an official statement. And CMs post all the time. They just don't always identify themselves as such.

No worries, much appreciated!

Now assuming you were a WDW CM, you live in Florida? It might end up in our mail sorting facility Miami/Port Canaveral within a week I reckon, but you're right - its tricky to know whether they're still on board, or at home, or transferred, or ...terminated! I wish I could say you could simply ask a crew member on the Dream - but between departments, we honestly don't know each other's full names!

It wouldn't hurt to call DCL directly with the Crew member's name and country of origin, and politely ask if they're currently on a ship. But from within the States, Id give it 2 weeks to reach a ship just in case!

Thanks so much! I do live on Orlando!

How would I address it? What are the specifics I need to get right in order for it to get there?

Also, I am FB friends with my server, but he rarely checks FB and the kids want to surprise him!

Your best bet might be to try messaging him what his mailing address might be - if he's on a ship that moves ports quite a bit, it changes every so often so they post it up for us to see on board!

I know for small things they have a mailing address for us at Lake Buena Vista, but thats not the one we give our families or...ebay/amazon for that matter. Let me see if I can look around!

That would be so helpful! You can PM it to me if that makes you more comfortable. Or even just point me in the direction of how I would get it. They're all on the Dream as of last month!

I want to be able to give CMs a bunch of candy and other things that have been mentioned. We will not have kids on our cruise (so no counselors to give it to). Do you recommend a place where we could drop off things?

We're planning to leave things to be autographed at Guest Services with a bunch of candy. I'd like to be able to share as much as possible, so is there any other place or way that you could suggest?

First off - THANK YOU for taking the time to answer all these questions! Very helpful and so nice of you!

We leave for the Dream in a week! I have a 9 year old and an almost 5 year old. My husband is reluctant to let them stay in the kids club. Any words of wisdom to convince him that it's safe?! I "trust" that Disney has thought of everything when it comes the kids' safety, but he still needs some convincing!

Thanks!

Our first cruise, I too was reluctant and only let my dd go in for an hour a couple times. When we got home, that is all she talked about!! It made me realize that my idea of fun and her idea of fun might not be the same thing. So next cruise, let her stay in longer, still had rules like we watched the shows together, ate meals together, ect.... well she had so much fun, the last night I picked her up, she cried herself to sleep as she was going to miss it so much. You will see it is wonderfully clean and all the CM really do try to make sure your kid is having the time of their life!!

Thanks! I have a feeling that once my kids (and their cousin) go once, they'll want to go back! The last time we went on a Disney Cruise, my older DD was only 3 and we didn't let her stay at all, but she didn't really have any interest at the time. Now that she's much older and she has her little sister and cousin to hang out with, I think they'll love it...at least I hope so! Now just to convince DH... :)

My DD was three on our first cruise and I thought we would use the club for an hour here and there. WRONG! The first time we went to check on her she begged to stay. The second cruise, she stayed nearly the entire time, except for meals. We let her stay in the secured area at Castaway Cay too. This time little brother is old enough to go to the club, too. I found it to be very safe, once you see the "gates" you will see that it really is impossible for them to slip out undetected. The clubs are one of the biggest reasons we keep taking Disney cruises.

Sent from me.

Question: As a CM associated with the kid programs/clubs I am interested with your take on the secure kids area on CC. My wife worries about leaving our DS (just turned 7) at this (He is an average swimmer at best-even with lessons-and with ocean all around she does not let him out of her sight). He LOVES the club and she has no problem/worries letting him go and stay there. Can you help me assure her it is really" SECURE" (as a person who has been on the inside) and he will be safe, because I would LOVE to at least SEE the Adult Beach! ;-) Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone!

I find the kids who have the best time with us are the ones who have been well prepped by their grownups about what to expect. Too often we have families come who haven't done their homework: "So how much are you charging us for this daycare? I thought y'all were going to dress up in costumes all day. What do you mean you don't have a soda machine for the kids, what'll they drink? Why won't you let me stay in here, just for a few hours, I paid so much for it!" * all real people

Thank goodness for Disboards. And all of you for looking things up!

5 Successful Ways to prepare your kids for the Club/Lab

Now, what you can do to prep your kids is to tell them:

-You won't be trapped. I won't be abandoning you, but this is a special place and the Disney characters sometimes only come when no grownups are around.
Biggest source of kid-panic and discomfort is the sobbing when they don't know if their family's coming back. For kids older than 6, giving them a time frame seems to make them happy to know how long they're in there. Kids hate the realization they can't leave when their grown ups haven't shown up.

-The counselors aren't mean teachers. These are older boys and girls who are Disney experts and good friends with the characters. They can help you make things to give to them!
Guests (and apparently some travel agents ) tell the kids some fairly strange things about the Counselors. We want the kids to feek comfortable playing with us and asking us for help. The above tends to work the best. Sidenote, my very...feathery roomate LOVED when we'd get the kids to make them crafts. She kept them on our wall!

-The Mickey Band is a special bracelet that all of the kids on the ship get to wear, just like at Disney World! Don't take it off, because only kids who wear this can play games or meet Mickey or Stitch or The Princesses without lining up in the Club!
We love the idea of those Magic bands they have in the parks - because it really prepares the kids for what to expect on board wearing Mickey bands. A lot of children who weren't told about the Mickey Band tend to not love it. One very clever family made "Oceaneer in training" bracelets for the kids to wear the week before their cruise to make them feel accustomed to it (and get them excited!). Best. Idea. Ever.

-On Mickey's boat, they like everyone to be clean all the time! So every boy and girl needs to know how to wash their hands!
We surprisingly have a lot of struggle with kids who simply don't wash their hands often enough - or whose parents just use hand sanitizer on them all the time. The sooner you can prepare your kids on how to use automatic faucets and hand dryers in rest rooms, so they don't get scared of them - the better!

-I can come with you for the first day, or when it is Open House so we can look at everything together. But you have to go and meet everyone and your Counselor friends on your own on the first night ok!
Also, make sure their first time is with you and not dropped off solo right away. Go to Open House with them, make sure they attend the welcome parties on the first evening. Those kids get the most comfortable in the space and end up being the ones who choose to spend all their time with us!

Even if you aren't sailing with any children, we'd still love it if you came to our floor even just to say hi, or to give us a little summary of what's been happening in the world. You should've seen the surprise that rippled through the department when we heard about the Royal baby from one guest casually mentioning it! :scared1:

Annnd if you have anything you want to drop off for us, feel free to! :)
I remember one time at the end of the cruise, one lady asked us if we had any need for her leftover conditioner and laundry detergent. Us girls ended up having an all out bidding war for it :rotfl:

We don't let the kids go anywhere near the water on Castaway, especially since we don't connect to it! So don't worry- the kids don't get to swim with us (but they do get wet in our fountain splashpad! )

Security is taken SO seriously on Castaway, to the point where you can see many of us physically standing by all gates and borders all day. We call this 'glorified security guard duty' and don't really get to interact with the kids - but! Don't think we're just standing around alone! We're an added line of security defense for the kids! :)

What you should be concerned about is sunscreen. Put loads on. Maybe give a little bag with a travel sized one and teach your children how to apply it. For maaany reasons, we aren't allowed to ever be seen applying sunscreen to a child!

We cruise the Wonder from LA to Vancouver in 2011 ( I think) First repo to Alaska. It was amazing! Just wanted to say Thank You to you and all CM's for your attention to details. My son has peanut allergy and one CM in the club was worried about the lunch for that day and he called me on wave phone to ask if DS's could eat the lunch. It really made me confident that my son would be safe in the clubs. Thank you again for all your hard work. Kids aren't the easiest to work with:)
