Cupcakes instead of birthday cake... Yes or No?

I'd check with the birthday person first, then I'd go ahead with the cupcake cake idea and use candles.

When I was a kid when dinosaurs walked the earth, my favorite part about birthdays was getting to pick out the cake. My mom made fancy cakes, so it was really fun and we had the best parties ever. We even got to go to the Cake Palace with mom to pick out the style and decorations she'd do for us. *sigh*
I know what you mean! I know there will be future parties where I'll make some cool cakes (I already have several possible ideas!) but since DS will only be 2 I don't think it matters so much. I think he'll be happy enough just because of the theme of Sesame Street!

For my son's last bday party we did cupcakes on the cupcake stand. It was a big hit.

I love the cupcake idea. I do that a lot when I make a birthday cake for someone.

You can still put candles into the cupcakes to blow out...we do.

For Alice's preschool, I did cupcakes, but before baking, I put the batter in an ice cream cone with a flat bottom. It was really neat and easy for the kids to eat, no knives and forks, no cupcake papers all over the place. Just a thought.

Just remember to make enough for the parents, lol!

I've done and been to parties where cupcakes were the cake, and they're always a hit.

I like to pair them with ice cream balls, like my mom used to do for our parties. Use use an scoop to make balls of ice cream, and then put each one in a cupcake paper (the foil ones hold up the best). Put some sprinkles or colored sugar on top, and then pop them in the freezer until it's cake time. The kiddies love it, and you don't have to mess with scooping out ice cream during the party.

If the kid's 2, how many candles were you planning on using? :)

We always had one for each year and one to grow on, so 3 would fit just fine on a cupcake (or you could buy one of those candles in the shape of the #2)

I remember having cupcakes at my brother's birthdays because he always ended up being sick (November) and it saved us from having him blow his germs all over the cake!

All this talk of Cupcakes is making me hungry!!!
Mm... Cupcakes are my favorite dessert of all!

I like the idea of cupcakes personally, but my mother works at a day care center with toddlers and preschoolers and more often than not she said that cupcakes just don't go over that well. She said generally the kids just usually make a mess with them. It doesn't seem to make much sense to me, but I guess maybe because they don't understand the concept? I don't know. I think the shove the cupcakes together to make it look like a cake is really neat, but I just wanted to give you another view point. Either way take lots of picts so we can see the results cause we all know it is a question of whether the child eats or wears more of it!:) I always did wear more than what I ate and still do!

I work in a supermarket bakery here in Mass and our cup and cake platters go over really well. We take a 7inch cake and can decorate it like elmo, cookie, big bird, oscar etc then make cupcakes similar to these

to go around the cake... too cute!

Those are AWESOME!!!

www.familyfun.com has some great recipes too if you want to check them out. I got great ideas for DDs princess birthday party from that site.

We just had DNephews 2nd Birthday party the end of June and we did a cake and cupcakes. The cupcakes were definetely more of a hit than a cake. All the kids were from about 2-8 and everyone of them wanted a cupcake not a piece of cake. They did not even want ice cream with them, just the cupcakes;)

Is that regular frosting or is it something that's professional grade which should be left up to a bakery to do? Oh, and do you place all the cupcakes close together before baking, or do you bake them normally and then arrange them close together afterwards?

You can use just a regular buttercream. To make it smooth just dip a knife in warm water and run it across the cake to smooth it.

For the cupcakes you can do one of two things. Use a dot of frosting on the bottom of the cupcake to hold them close while you frost/transport. Another thing you can do is to use the metal cupcake cups and arrange the cake on a cookie sheet or such and bake. Be sure to overfill them just a bit so that they will go over the top of the cups and "cook" together. Also the metal cups are a must, the paper ones aren't firm enough to hold the cupcakes w/o the cupcake pan.

HTH's!

Cupcakes are in style. We went to a party where the cupcake cake came from Walmart (my first Walmart bakery item). It was really cute.

For Sesame Street, I really think you should make a Cookie Monster Cake. Use the Revere Metal Bowl and bake it. Turn flat side down, frost and insert partial cookie into mouth. Marshmallows for eyes.

My nickname isn't "Princess Cupcake" for nothing..I say go for it! :)
