Crusin' to Alaska May 24th, 2011 (Lots of photos, menus, ship docs)

John Charles was hilarious. We went to his adult show and then for the first 30 minutes of the family show. We snuck out to go to the animal towel folding class since I really wanted to go to that.

That was you who left John Charles early? :rotfl: Don't take this the wrong way, but you leaving was one of the best laughs. As soon as you were gone JC said. "I thought they'd never leave." Then something about a wet blanket being lifted off the room and now we'd be able to have some real fun. Then about 5 minutes later a new couple came in and he said "It's about time." and thanked them for taking time out of their busy schedule to join us.

Wasn't towel folding cool though? We did that on the last cruise. The monkey is my favorite.

Hi!

I have really enjoyed your trip report. We will be on the July 19th, 2011 sailing and I can hardly wait! I do have a couple of questions for you:

1) What service are you using to host your photos? Photobucket? Flickr? Something else? I have yet to post a picture because I don't know where I need to load them in order to put them up.

I'm using SmugMug. We have a subscription and we back-up our photos there. I think a lot of people use Flickr. I think there's a whole thread on DIS somewhere about how to post photos.

2) You mentioned that you are using an E-510. My DH and I both have E-520's and I was wondering what lenses you were using. I am particularly curious about what you were using as your zoom. Oh, and the panoramic that you shot in Ketchikan, was that done with the Olympus or with another camera?

Both the lenses I have came with the camera as a set. The long one is labeled "Hoya 58mm PL-CIR.

All my panaramic photos were shot with the Olympus. Each was shot as a series of several photos and then stitched together using Window Live Photo Gallery. (I used to have a camera that took panaramics in a single shot, but it also used film. I miss the convenient feature, but not the film)

:lmao: That is hilarious especially since DH and I deliberately sat on the side by the door (the one by the bar) so we could just slip out Looks like my plan to slip out discreetly didn't work out but at least it gave him a joke. :thumbsup2

We really liked the towel folding even though DH's monkey turned out a lot better than mine.

Enjoying your trip report! Ketchikan looks like fun. I love the walkway along the water. Was it an easy walk from the ship to the Totum Poles? I'd like to do that after our excursion that day.

The walk to Creek Street from the ship was probably about 20 leisurely minutes. (We kept stopping to take photos) If you want to see the totems you either have to take the tram, which is located at about the center of Creek Street (and $2 per person). Or you can look for the "Married Man's Trail" off to the left of the central Creek Street entrance. Then it's about a minute hike uphill using trails and stairs.

We set the alarm for 7:00 so we could take our time getting dressed and doing the final packing. We were told we needed to be out of our cabin by 8:30. The ship was already parked at the dock, but we hadn’t heard them announcing departures yet.

We said our final goodbye to cabin 8000 around 7:45 and went up to Cove Café for DH’s free coffee. Somehow he ordered exactly the right number to fill his coffee card and leave him with one for free.

Sad that the cruise is over. (DS is pretending to cry)

We wandered across deck 9, where the crew was prepping the pool areas for the next batch cruisers, and went down to Shutters to pick up our last photo. It still wasn’t quite time for breakfast so we went out onto deck 4 where we watched the crew take off the big bins of luggage and put on palates of oranges, potatoes and other supplies.

i-KLThMQL-M.jpg

Breakfast was at Animator’s Palate at 8:15. Around 8:30 we heard them call the first groups to disembark.

We certainly hope this is true.
i-WNG5RQr-M.jpg

We finished eating and were discussing where to go until our group was called when they called our group. (around 9:15) We hugged our servers goodbye one more time and went down to deck 3 to disembark.

The exit line was really short. After you wind down the ramp and enter the building they scan your KTTW cards for the final time. (sniff, sniff) Then there are tables set up where people can collect items they weren’t allowed to have in their luggage or carry-ons. Things like knives purchased in ports. But there were also about a ½ dozen clothing irons. (Does anyone know why you can’t carry an iron in your luggage?) Then there was a lost and found table. We hoped the “lost” stuffed animals found their young owners.

Next came the Declaration Line. It took about 15 minutes to get through. Just around the corner from that cast members were directing people to their luggage. (Don’t forget which character tag you have) We found the Tinkerbell section quickly and our luggage too. There were lots of luggage carts available so we grabbed two and loaded up. One last short check point and we were back in the main building we’d entered one week ago.

i-ttgKSjs-M.jpg

Waiting for the parking garage elevator. (This was the last photo I took as we had packed the cameras in the trunk for the ride home)

At this point I made a comment to DH about how quick and easy disembarking had been. Oops! I’d invoked Murphy’s Law so something was bound to go wrong. It didn’t take long to learn what. When we got to the car the battery was dead. The Vincy Parking attendants were really helpful and brought a jumper box. It turned out the battery was soooo dead that the jumper box couldn’t even start the car. He politely ran off to borrow a rental car which easily got it started. We thanked and tipped him for his assistance and he helped us get us checked out of the garage and on our way.

There was only about a 30 minute wait crossing the border back into the US.

We stopped at a favorite sushi place for a late lunch and were at my mom-in-law’s to pick up the dog around 3:00. If you’re ever sad from leaving a vacation I hope you’re coming home to a dog. He totally cheered us up.

After we gave mom a brief summary of the cruise we began the last leg of our journey. We pulled in our driveway around 4:00.

It was an excellent trip and it’s been really fun reliving it here. Thank you all for your compliments, encouraging comments and questions and I hope you all get to experience the magic of a Disney cruise for yourself soon.

Coming in further posts... All about the dining with food photos, Navigator scans and other cruise papers, and perhaps more.

Wow, I feel like I am reading our last day. :lmao: We got back to a dead battery as well. :sad2: Like you, we tried the portable charger from Di Vinci and it didn't work. Luckily a nice woman who was also from the cruise from WA helped us and gave it a jump start (thanks so much if you happen to be a Disboarder and read this). Dead batteries must have been a common theme that day. There was another family there that just got a jump start right before and then were having trouble with their car alarm.

Thanks so much for the trip report. It has been fun reading it. :)

But there were also about a ½ dozen clothing irons. (Does anyone know why you can’t carry an iron in your luggage?)

They are not allowed in the cabin in case we forget to turn them off - same thing with candles not allowed....fire hazard so they confiscate them at the start of the cruise

Doncha just luv having that kind of homecoming:)

Thank you so very much for your wonderful information and your great photos...I am better able to see where I am going or what I should be wearing. I also appreciate the pics fr Ketchikan.

Thanks so much for sharing your trip. :flower3: I really enjoyed it! We leave for our disney alaska cruise vacation in 2 weeks and are so excited. :yay: I loved all of your pictures....you have a lovely family! I especially loved the "where's Perry" photos...very cute. Have a magical day!

I finally finished scanning the Navigators from our cruise. I always get two each day. The one our room host puts on our bed goes in a folder so it doesn't get wrinked. (My scanning version) Then the next morning I drop by the main desk on deck three and pick up another copy which I write on throughout the day. (My planning version)

We were handed our "Day 1" navigator in the cruise terminal before we boarded.

Thanks for posting the navigators! I do the same thing with keeping one pristine for the scrapbook and then marking another up, folding it into my pocket.

Looking forward to smiling through the other days as well. Getting so excited for our cruise.

HI Dawn:

If you happend to photograph any of the menus would you mind adding those to your report?

What a wonderful resource you've given us all - thank you SO much!!

I have quite a few photos of the menus and photos of some meals as well. I'd be happy to post them.

Thank you for reading!

We took photos of most of our main meals and the menus. We didn't get all of them, but I'll post what I have. I'll preface this by saying that most everything we had was delicious. Taste is subjective so I won't critique the food, but every night my family voted on which were the best dishes in each category so I put a :thumbsup2 next to the winners. Other than that I'll keep my opinions to myself. If you have questions though, please ask.

Day 1: Animator's Palate - AP menu

Unfortunately this is one of days I didn't get photos of the menus. It was the regular Animator's Palate menu though. The one with the cute shifting pictures on the cover.

I found a site with great scans of the menus. They will probably be easier to read then my photos. (For some reason the post keeps converting my URL to astericks so its unreadable.) If you search for Disney Cruise Line Menus a web site called Disney Cruiser Info has a ton of them.

(an older photo I have of a shifting AP menu cover)
