cruising with an oxygen tank

I realize that planes don't allow oxygen tanks on them -- too much danger of explosion.

What about cruise ships?

My aunt is on oxygen and her son drives her hundreds of miles to visit family, instead of putting her on a plane. I'm just wondering if she'd be able to take a cruise.

Yes you can take an oxygen tank but they have guidelines. Have a look at the DCL website.
It is actually part of their frequently asked questions page. Hopefully your aunt will be able to enjoy a trip with the family.

It depends on the tank and oxygen system. I posted this to another thread.

If you need oxygen onboard, you will have to contact DCL's Special Services department at 407-566-3500. You will also need to complete and submit a Special Services Information form at least 60 days prior to departure. You may bring it aboard yourself or arrange for delivery to the ship. This is the information on the form, as well as some questions to answer:
OXYGEN If you require oxygen, you must make independent delivery arrangements or bring your own. Due to safety concerns and storage limitations, Disney Cruise Line does not allow carriage or use of liquid oxygen or large tank systems onboard. Additionally, the types and quantities of oxygen tanks allowed on board may be limited. Oxygen concentrators are acceptable. Guests are responsible for notifying their air carrier of any oxygen requirements. Guests may carry one oxygen tank for use while on board Disney Cruise Line ground transportation.

Airlines will allow portable oxygen concentrators. You would need to contact the specific airline to find out their restrictions and requirements.

Agree with @lanejudy. Special Services is very good with these sort of requests...when we did our Alaska cruise in '12 one of our tablemates was on dialysis...she had dreamed of going to Alaska and DCL accommodated her. It was amazing!
