Cruising with a Baby

Wow, great advice! I love the ideas. I will be traveling on the wonder in August with a 1 year old and a 4 1/2 year old. We have been on a cruise with the 4 1/2 year old when she was one so, we definitely know what to expect but I loved all the additional info given.

I am looking at those Twingles now.....

Don't bring the sit and stand! Two umbrella strollers would be good. A nice single stroller + Buggy or Kiddy board (www.lascal.se for info - several retailers sell them online) would be even better. (I LOVE my Maclaren Free Spirit + Buggy Board combo - wish I had had it on the cruise).

Awesome advice which I will heed. I have one umbrella stroller (got it for free with no canopy) and I'm looking at getting the maclaren cruiser DX stroller from ebay. ($20 plus shipping) This will be much much better than bringing our sit'n stand and for an added bonus I won't hear my DDs fighting about who gets to stand in the back. Yes, my 1 1/2 y/o thinks she is 3 like the other one.

We have friends that are thinking about taking their almost 4 month baby with them for our 7 day cruise on March 15, 2003. We think that they will so busy with the baby that they may not be able to enjoy the cruise very much. The baby will be a little over the12 weeks age limit that DCL has. If anyone has taken a baby around 15 weeks please send any tips for us to pass along to our friends.
Thanks

Padre Disney - I'd advise your friends AGAINST taking a baby so young on a cruise. Mainly for the lack of good medical care for one so young. I can understand on wanting to take a vacation, I have to have at least 2 a year, but I would not take a baby so young on a boat. Think about it, possibly 2 days at sea with no hospital, pediatrician, or other than scant medical care close by. Not something I'd look forward to.

I'm all for traveling with kids and don't think you should leave them behind or have to stop traveling when you become a parent. That said, I think I would have to advise your friends to wait a little longer on a cruise. It's a lot of money to commit far in advance when your baby isn't even here. I have several reasons, and medical care actually isn't one of them. My DD came 2 weeks late. If this happens to your friends, they'll be awfully close to the age limit for taking a baby. Another thing is that you never know what the temperment of a baby is going to be. Will they be sleeping through the night at that age? Will they handle change well? We started traveling with DD when she was 2 1/2months and she did wonderfully. DS was another story. If we had cruised with him at 4 mo, we would have been exhausted and not been able to enjoy ourselves much. He doesn't nap well in strollers, and likes a little bit more familiarity/routine to his life. He wasn't sleeping through the night until we diagnosed his food allergies at 8 mo and I adjusted my diet. Another thing is to consider how comfortable your friends are with a baby. Is this their first? If it is, have they been around babies enough to be completely comfortable with being parents? DH and I had no problems traveling with our first b/c we have been around babies our whole lives. Our new parent paranoia was small compared to others.

My advice would be to try to cruise a month later (or more). Your friends may get lucky and get a really portable baby who will sleep anywhere, or they may get

Ugh - hit reply instead of preview. Let me finish my last sentence

They may get lucky and get a portable baby who will sleep anywhere, or they may get my DS and wish they had waited.

What's best - bring all the diapers from home or stop off at Grocery store with limo stop and purchase when I get to Cocoa or Port Canaveral? If yes to the latter, where is the best store to get diapers, waters and beer (not for me, but for DH)?
